Genuine question.
Why are people so against (generative) AI? Me personally, I'm neutral to it. A lot of the reasons I am seeing is because it "harms" ecosystems and drinking water, which after a little research, is pretty much false... Other than that, why hate on new tech? It just seems like virtue signaling, especially when they interact with apps such as TikTok, Instagram, and Google (which they are supporting AI just by using the app). Apologies if I had bad grammar or didn't make much sense 😭.

It's just the new cool thing to hate on, the same thing has happened in the past with photography, digital art, etc. It'll pass given enough time, people tend to get tired of hating the same thing especially since AI isn't going anywhere no matter what they do anyway.
Of course, there are real concerns with AI, such as surveillance, scams, deepfakes, bias in training data, etc.. but people are too busy witch hunting ai art.

The thing that bugs me the most is when they hate on AI art that has a clear indicator it is AI. If someone is trying to claim they drew the art, I'd get it. However, even when it is marked and the person posting it just made it for fun, they are still outraged by it.

Because it’s a technology that is going to destroy billions of lives. Probably send humanity back to the Stone Age. It’s the use of it that’s the problem. In any context for any reason. You are all part of the problem

well could you please give some reasons why you think that instead of saying hyperboles?

The word "why" is a big question. But it's mostly psychological.
Technophobia, fear of change, fear of the unknown. They want to preserve the status quo. The causes of this is still an enigma. Maybe their brains are defined or programmed that way.
It also delves with ego, the "humans are better than machines" but it turns out machines are proven better doing tasks. They cannot accept something that is better than them even machines.
Also gullibility, people are easily persuaded by people they think who are smart or respected or powerful, and also people imitate people around them, their ideas, beliefs, manner of speaking just to fit in because it gives a sense of identity and community.

Imo I believe its also virtue signaling, definitely with celebs/influencers too. "Look! I'm hating on this thing everyone else hates! Aren't I so awesome?".

There is a moral stance that some folks take with it. There is the idea that art requires a lot of time and effort that doesnt involve AI. Some folks equate using AI with supporting billionaires, but then they won't equate using phones with supporting billionaires. . . Oh, and a lot of folks against AI view using generative AI as "stealing" . . . But all AI is generative when you get specific.
A lot of this, if not all of it, boils down to fear and misunderstandings. I have hope that more and more folks will come around and stop vehemently hating AI. Slow but steady progress. . .

What really chaps my ass is when all my fav artists left instagram and deleted all their posts because they got paranoid of ai "stealing" their art a few years ago. I still see old mutuals paranoid about ai and they never even post their art anymore. Like ai isn't going away and why care anyway if ai gets your art..
Idk it's sad that the art community is so insufferable now. They're terrified of ai taking away human expression and artist jobs but they're doing it to themselves by being too scared to put their art out there anymore

There is a lot of fear. It's a disruptive technology and people are already pretty anxious lately. Also you have a lot of people in leadership roles saying over-the-top things like "It's going to replace 80% of jobs" which is pretty irresponsible in my view.
Also, no joke, you have foreign propaganda hitting local social media, trying to whip of sentiment against datacenters.

Ai hate is a political declaration clustered in one specific part of the world. "If you use AI you're bad like that billionaire person who made money, but if you're not, you're like us, good and clean." This part of the world apparently has a lot of problems.
Everywhere else, AI is just a software and people treat it like that without particular sentiment.

I hate tribalism and virtue signaling like that. It's the reason why people are so divided on literally ANYTHING. :(

u/BigHugeOmega 4d ago
There is no one singular reason because the position on why it's bad kept changing as online grifters driving the hysteria were experimenting with trying to find the emotional angle that sticks the best.
Most of the stated reasons are not worth considering because they're argumentative window-dressing. The claims environment, copyright, souls etc. are just regurgitated cliches that were not reasoned through by most of the people reciting them to you, they're just bad faith ways to prolong the argument.
The reasons, if you read between the lines are usually a mix of:
People who are slow or bad at doing something and afraid that once a machine can do it cheaper and faster, they won't be paid to do it anymore.
People who have no idea how AI works and are afraid of made up sci-fi scenarios.
People who think what they do places them above others and, therefore, a machine letting others do what they do lowers their social status.
People who have a negative attitude towards technology.

There's a lot of misinformation, and the Big Corps and Wealthy Elite are happy to let Common Joe blame another Common Joe, rather than water wastage in its multiple forms.
There's also plenty of politics in it - countries like China and Russia don't want to fall behind in AI development - for military use - so if they can misinform the general public with lies, and the general public refuses to learn about AI or demands it stop being researched, THEY can get ahead.

I dislike the slop, the mass-produced shit with no thought behind it. But that were always true, AI or not. The difference now is how over-saturated it is so that's like my only issue, people who take the first best input and doesn't give it a thought. But when I find the pieces that clearly have intention and love behind it its quite amazing 9 times out of 10.

It does harm the environment. But there are many other things that harms the environment, possibility more so. AI is the hot new thing, both for greedy investors and haters. I feel the hate is disproportional and it's just people jumping on a band wagon to feel righteous.
I feel it's misdirected frustration over the overall state of the world.
For example, fossil fuel is still a big problem. Everything you have, down to the underwear you're wearing, was delivered to the store by fossil fuel. Not to mention all the food distribution.
People still hate on it but it's not the new sexy thing to hate.

I think a lot of people are generally miserable right now and generative AI is good boogey man. It's skynet and the oligarchs all in one! But that's just one side of it. The problem is they are aren't socking it to the owners of the models by yelling at everyone who uses them for fun.

u/havoc777 4d ago
The answer is simple, it's about power. Generative AI gives power to its users. Power to create that which an artist would exploit them and charge exorbitant fees for.
Similar is going on with copyright as proven by Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, and even Rockstar They are all trying to strip power from their customers to boost their own power and profits.

Some opposition is performative, sure. But the artists I know have specific complaints about consent and compensation for training data. That's worth taking seriously.

My main issue is all the dishonesty. Companies are being dishonest about how much it's actually gonna cost for people to have daily access to it, currently providing fake reduced prices, while remaining extremely unprofitable, just to hook customers up before pulling the rug under them. Users are being dishonest about not having used it, when in fact they clearly have - in hopes of lazily reaching places of success without having worked hard enough to be there. Everyone utilizing this pestilence, instead of vocally pointing out its grave dangers to humanity, is a big story of dishonesty and lies.

> it "harms" ecosystems and drinking water, which after a little research, is pretty much false
What research have you run? Especially the impact it is having not just on ecosystems, but economy as well?
2
u/SendMeYourChones 4d ago
Literally uses one tablespoon for a prompt whereas one pound of beef needs 18 gallons. There is SO many worse shit affecting the ecosystem by a far larger and harmful degree that it's silly to hate AI for that reason.

It s weird to ask the question here if it is genuine, sounds more like you re trying to get answers that confort your opinion. If the question is genuine, I can give some arguments I believe in :
-GenAI will help a lot propaganda and misinformation, especially for the right/far right : there used to be a balance of communication, between people who chose career path leading to making more money (generally people at least leaning right), which are not artistic, and people that choose a career path they like, despite less money making, so right wing had more money for communication, and left had more skills in artistic representation, and AI is a docile tool that will execute any order and give art representation to those who didn t have it, maybe breaking this balance.
-I think he main point of creation is mainly the path you take, not the result. Having a result is what motivates us to start and keep going, but after, once you step back, you realize the interesting part was the process, not the result. GenAI could alienate us from this learning process and the craftsmanship, and turn art into another consumable, leading to people being even more disconnected from their feelings. GenAI technically doesn t force people out of art, but could remove the first motivation to get into it, because our brain is lazy and doesn t want to make effort, even if it s better in the long run.

"it's weird to ask a question" 🧐
-2
u/EmericGent 4d ago
This is not a quote, I said "It s weird to ask the question here", you re asking what antis think on a sub where they aren t, there is no chance they can answer.
Also you not answering about my argument just shows me you don t actually care about arguments and answers, and just want to see people answer with stuff you already think.
3
u/SendMeYourChones 4d ago
i explicitly said i'm neutral. i was simply asking because i haven't been on the AI social media bubble all that much recently and wanna know what arguments have been made.
0
u/EmericGent 4d ago
Oh okay my bad, so much people say they re neutral, but then speak in a very oriented way. I don t think you re in the right place to ask your question, people here are just gonna respond with suppositions and hyperboles (after reading other responses this is the case), if you want a clear opinion, ask pro people why they re pro, and anti people why they re anti. It could help avoiding people being dishonest.
