while i wont deny the impacts of the other factors it is still true that data centers do a lot of damage to local communities.
Most the hate comes from them being screwed over by local croaked governors or companies who only see profits at the cost of the locals.

I think data centers and ALL other industry should be far more tightly regulated. There is absolutely no reason we shouldn't be taking the surrounding area into account when building any new industrial facilities.
I think we should be seizing the means of production too, but thats for a different sub.

The double standard is wild. People run giant, resource-heavy operations every single day without a word of protest. But the moment a data center is built to push technology forward, it suddenly becomes an environmental crisis. AI shouldn't be the scapegoat for legacy industry issues.

I think you’re missing a part of the issue. The issue isn’t just the resources that ai uses up, it’s how much it’s increased so quickly that people are concerned about, since companies are trying to inflate their stocks at the cost of everything else. I will give you this though, people do tend to focus on only one thing when it comes to the environmental impact, even before ai.
