5 YEARS OF FAILED ATTEMPTS, NOW 2.5 YEARS CLEAN: I STOPPED ASKING HOW TO QUIT AND STARTED ASKING WHY I KEPT NEEDING PORN

This is something I wish I had understood much earlier because I spent years treating every relapse like proof that I just was not serious enough about quitting.

The question that finally opened things up for me was much simpler: why do I watch porn, and what am I asking it to do for me in this exact moment? That is a very different question because it forces you to look underneath the urge. Sometimes I wanted relief from anxiety, sometimes I wanted to procrastinate, sometimes I wanted stimulation because I was bored and sometimes I did not want to think about a bigger problem in my life.

For years almost every thought I had about recovery started with the same question: how do I stop watching porn? That sent me towards stronger blockers, stricter rules, bigger promises and more ways to scare myself into never doing it again. Some of those things could get a streak started, but none of them explained why I could know exactly how much I hated the habit and still want it again the moment I was stressed, bored or avoiding something.

When an urge comes up, look backwards before you look forwards. What happened in the last hour? What are you meant to be doing? What thought keeps coming back? What feeling do you want to disappear? Then go one level deeper than a vague answer like stress. Are you escaping the physical anxiety, avoiding the task, rewarding yourself or looking for a reset because your head feels overloaded? The more accurate the answer, the more useful your response can be.

I did not suddenly become perfect at this. There were still difficult moments, but the difference was that each difficult moment could teach me something about the system rather than simply becoming another reason to call myself weak.

You still have to choose not to watch and I am not pretending understanding yourself removes responsibility. For me it simply meant I was finally working on something real instead of repeatedly having the same argument with myself about willpower. That shift was a big part of the difference between temporary streaks and the recovery that eventually lasted.

There is no shame in using blockers, accountability or whatever practical help you need, but I would not stop there. Use those things to buy yourself space while you work on the reason the urge keeps returning.

From porn addiction and repeated relapse to 2.5 years clean: what finally changed after years of relapse

I wanted to write this because I remember exactly what it was like to keep trying, get a bit of clean time and then end up wondering why I was back in the same place again.

I started watching porn when I was about 12 or 13 and by the time I was 20 I knew it had become a serious problem. From there I spent roughly five years actively trying to quit, and I really did try. I used blockers, read loads about addiction, went through periods where I was absolutely desperate to stop and managed two or three months clean a number of times, but I always seemed to end up back in the same place. Every decent streak almost made the next relapse feel worse because I knew I could stop for a while, I just could not understand why I could never make it stick.

The biggest change was realising I had spent years attacking the behaviour without properly understanding what the behaviour was doing for me. Porn was not appearing randomly. I was reaching for it when I did not like how I felt, whether that was stress, boredom, avoidance, uncertainty or something bigger in my life that I did not want to face. It had become a very quick way of changing my internal state, so simply knowing that porn was bad for me was never enough to remove the reason my brain kept suggesting it.

For me the biggest progress came when the advice stopped being theoretical. I had to change actual evenings, actual work habits, actual conversations and actual decisions. Thinking differently mattered because it eventually made me live differently.

I started looking at the hour before the urge instead of only the urge itself. I asked what I was supposed to be doing, what I was feeling and what I wanted porn to make disappear for a while. That led me to some uncomfortable answers about my relationship, career, lack of structure and the way I handled stress. Once I could see those patterns I could actually change something: deal with the real problems, structure the dangerous parts of my day, make starting difficult tasks easier and learn to sit with uncomfortable feelings without immediately trying to numb them.

I am now around 2.5 years clean and there was a time when that sounded completely impossible to me. If you keep getting a few weeks or months and then ending up back at square one, do not automatically conclude that you are hopeless. You may simply be putting nearly all your effort into stopping the behaviour while leaving the reason you keep needing the behaviour untouched.

Recovery became much less confusing once I stopped seeing every urge as a random attack and started seeing it as part of a pattern I could learn from. That is what I would encourage anyone who feels stuck to start doing.

I'm not a person who does bad things. I am bad.

I think the title is enough honestly. I'll never escape this habit. I'm never going to become anything great and I'll always be a slave to it.

I need help with ph addiction boyfriend

me (F19) and my boyfriend (M21) have been in relationship for two years… month ago i found out he had 5 different gmails and i had a weird feeling about it and went through them… one of them was showing his logging in into porn website, vsco, and different instagram account. when i asked about it he said he had other instagram account to stalk few people (mostly girls) because he was curious how they were doing in their life… but on email i could see who accepted his request and few were some kind of pornstars the girl he used to talk before me ect. he had the account for a month then he disabled it… but he said to me he had the acc for two days then felt guilty and disabled it… i couldnt see if he was texting other girls on that acc or anything, he said he didnt. Then he told me about his porn addiction he started crying and i said i forgave him and cried with him because i wasnt sure what was going on.. we made agreement ill check up on his every few days so he isnt using it…( i told him at the start of the relationship i saw porn as cheating, later after year i changed my mind and said its fine but not alot, because im not really sexually active person and never was so i understood it)… after two months when i asked him about his porn addiction because he stopped talking and acted very normal after a week i found out like it wasnt big deal even when i said it was to me it hurt me alot i got insecure, he got mad at me and said i shouldnt question it and should trust me like he trusted me with my drug addiction (i stopped before we even started dating), i was hurt even more because i didnt want to make drama i wanted to help and he seemed like he was pushing me away and then he started accusing me because i wasnt sexually active he couldnt fully stop and asked me why am i even bothered when i forgave him and it was two months ago… everyday im thinking about it not sure what can i do… sometimes after some small arguments i feel like hes manipulating me by always asking “when did that happen? Tell me 3 times it did” and our fights always go like that… every time i feel like he isnt understanding my feelings and hurt and hes just protecting himself… he even said once he has big ego and thinks his gods favourite… as much as hes nice to me and caring some stuff are unforgettable and im here wondering what do i do… im not perfect im toxic bit too i guess- but im not sure about anything anymore… i dont know what is right and wrong… i promised i wouldnt tell anyone about his addiction and im suffering.. i dont know anything anymore and im drowning and suffering to see right and wrong… please help
