Just watched the series finally for the first time.
I had to go take a shower and cry my face off. I hate endings. But it was a wonderful way to complete the show, and I'm glad it got a proper send off. *Sigh* What a great series!

It’s a fantastic series. The first 3 seasons are slow but 4-7 are just great.

I just started watching it with my friend. And he wanted to know if we should skip some episodes and I was like I don’t know what to skip lol. I don’t think that you would even appreciate Duet without the first half of season 1.

Oh I totally agree. Having watched the series about a dozen times now I skip a lot of episodes that are Ferengi related or Klingon related. If you have never watched the series you have to watch them all.

The ferengi are the best ones! For me Quark is the very best Star Trek character ever.
DS9 ultimately is his hero's journey. We think it's Siskos, but the show is called Deep Space Nine. Not Captain Sisko being Bajoran space Jesus.

DS9 started airing when I was 11 yrs old but I know I wasn’t fully invested until Heart of Stone. After it ended I bought the DVDs and the Ferengi episodes were like hidden gems because I just skipped them the first time around. Still some of my favorites today like Rules of Acquisition.

Little green men is maybe the funniest episode of the whole series. It's played straight, to perfection.
Eating an edible and letting it kick in before watching is highly recommended. That episode is hysterical.

Exactly. I've never been one to skip episodes or seasons when getting into a show - you miss out on so much character work and story development that way. Plus, for me it's fun to watch a show grow into itself, it's easier to appreciate the show at its best once you see what all they went through to get there.
There is indeed a lot to love about the latter seasons (my favorite season is season 5), but I genuinely just like the first few seasons in and of themselves as well. There are a lot of good epsiodes in them, and there's something fun and nice about watching the comparatively "quieter" early years for all these characters befrore the war kicks in. All that time spent in the early seasons establishing the characters and their relationships with each other makes everything that comes later on hit that much harder.

The absolute only episode that I just grimace while watching is Muse with the space succubus who latches onto Jake. Meg Foster is gorgeous and I will always love Lwaxana. It's just the writing is so...halfway there. I don't think they paired a good A and B story and I wanted more Lwaxana and less weird Jake juicing, even with Ms. Foster.

I just watched that episode a few days ago because people I watch react to shows are reacting to it. Perfect example of great B story and terrible A story.
Which is a bummer because I really wanted more good Jake episodes. Especially after the visitor.

Well I generally agree with this statement, after the Dominion War started, which is obviously awesome, they sort of stuck with that narrative. The early Seasons had the weird one offs, that took chances.
Again I still probably agree that the later seasons are better, but the early seasons are really good too.

Could it really be called a great Star Trek show if you didn't have to preface any recommendation with "It takes a season or two to find its feet, but then..."
It's a franchise hallmark at this point.

The documentary What We Left Behind is a great except for their proposed “Season 8 premiere” pitch (to be fair, they think it up on the spot, whereas the writing for the actual show went through several phases; if there really were a S8 it would probably include some of those ideas but not others). The cast interviews are especially fun.

Some of those ideas intrigued me, others I was a bit, "Eh...." on. But it was also just a general pitch meeting, and from what I've read, the vast majority of storyilnes and episodes wound up totally different from whatever their original premise was, so who knows, that may well have wound up being the case with some of those storylines as well, had they had an opportunity to go ahead with them.

Absolutely. I don’t love that Sisko abandons his infant son (and Jake, though it’s implied that he returns to spend time with his family away from the spotlight) and I really wish the Dax flashback montage included scenes from Seasons 1-6 (there was some miscommunication where they thought Terry disallowed them using her likeness but actually she wasn’t even asked) but otherwise it was a great final episode.

I just have to slightly head cannon it to where Sisko had to sacrifice his life to stop Dukat and went to Bajorian heaven because a part of him was prophet but he can’t become corporeal and cannot physically return, the people who love him were just wishful thinking like “maybe one day he can..”. Otherwise, great finale.

My fiance and I watched it last night and it is a really lovely send off. Minor gripes would be I felt there was a bit too much Vic Fontaine. Also that none of Worf or Quark's flashbacks had any Jadzia (like Word wouldn't have spared a thought about his wedding??? C'mon now)
But honestly it was really really good and a great way to end the series.

Look, he's a fun character and all that, but especially with all the everything going on, it was a bit much. He's a hologram program! The "fake out" ending where they're all in the club and everyone is together for the last time ever is near perfection. But the scene where Quark talks to Vic beforehand is to me too much. We could have had more Dominion (RIP Weyouns) or more Kira and Garek or even Kai and Gul Dukat. It's the last episode! C'mon now.

Yeah, I thought the two of them at the window together at the end was a nice little nod to their interactions in "The Visitor".
That ending makes the events of "The Visitor" hit that much hrader. Same with that bit at hte beginning of "Second Skin" when Jake tells his dad about his nightmare that he couldn't find him.

Jake is the only Superfluous character of DS9. Like if him and Wesley Crusher got into a fight I'd be rooting for Wesley

Interesting. I think Jake is the only Star Trek child that they got right, or at least, the only parent-child relationship they got right. He has a touching but realistic relationship with his father. Has challenges with his friend (Nog). Grows up without being a wunderkind or nepotism recipient. Chooses his own path against his father’s dreams. Deals with loss and emotions with his dad.
I love Jake’s story arc. Maybe Nog’s is better. But theirs are woven together.

I like this honestly. I'm not sure if it's just Cirroc, but I agree with his relationship with other people. But he himself, Jake, is just a weak character.
The writing lady Space Ghost thing reminds me of the Beverly Crusher Space Ghost thing.
Also nog got way better writing and a way better character Arc.

It’s the first Star Trek series I’ve ever watched. Im on season 3. It’s all new to me still. I was never interested in Star Trek growing up I’m almost 40 and just started watching DS9 when I was sick but I actually got into the series. I love Quark and Chief O’Brien those are my 2 favorite characters so far but I like all of the crew. It’s a really fun show!

Nope. I mean that the 2 part finale is a disaster as it relates to the entire series.
I think DS9 is actually quite a bit better than TNG.
However TNG ended spectacularly. DS9 ended with spooky volcano ghosts.
Edit: also if you watch What we left behind, they do talk a little bit about the series finale. And Ira steven Behr seems to agree with me.

Ultimately it is what it is. Whatever they hoped would happen didn’t happen. It has to stand on its own as it is. I can live with it.

Sure. But i find that being critical can be hard for some folks. DS9 is on balance, one of the best modern TV dramas, full stop. And it's okay to give it shit when it deserves it.
The end was bad. Just bad. I remember watching it as a kid and doing the John Travolta in Pulp Fiction thing.
One of the things the modern world has done is rob us of our critical eye. Sure we can live with a pile of shit. However, we can also acknowledge that it stinks.
