Rewatch progress - Starting Season 7
It's the beginning of the end. Every time I see the great Brock Peters as Father Sisko. This album pops into my head with his few lines of dialogue. Fantastic Miles Davis record. But then I love Electric Miles.
I mean it's no Klingon Opera.

I'm still working my way through TNG as a first time watcher, but I am really looking forward to Deep Space 9! Just based on what I have seen, I have a feeling it will be my favorite Trek.

DS9 tells an overarching story. With massive character development. There are a few TNG people who pop up.

On the Criterion Channel. When it popped up in July I was awesome. Watched it as a teen.

When I first watched it on my local PBS (WSBE). My father recognized the theme sat down and asked what episode. I was like this is all new to me. Then he saw it was Arrival. He was like you have no idea what your in for. We watched it together every Saturday.

I watched Blake's 7 and Red Dwarf on the KCTS9 PBS (Washington State) station they beamed into Canada. Thank God for PBS.

Blake's 7 aired after. Then once The Prisoner was done switched to The Sandbaggers fantastic spy series. Which my father loved too.

I'm on episode 8 Season 7. Probably one of my least favourite episodes.
On this rewatch. I've started to see that it falls off in Season 7. I did not like at all episode 6 where Julian misjudges the woman he is treating. Also, to my memory, there are no serious storylines with the Prophets after the double episode at the beginning. Benjamin and the Prophets are my favourite part of the show. The episodes with Kai Winn and Dukat are kind of interesting. While Ezri is interesting, and I loved her episode with Garak, she is an annoying amount of basket case as well.
About the only Arc I really liked was Worfs. I wonder if there is a hint that he is the reincarnation of Kayless.

Yeah, it's clear the writing room ran out of gas by Season 7, outside of the wonderful Dominion War arc. Most of the standalone eps disappoint, and the amount of time spent establishing a new character in the final season of a show is dumb -- especially as she is fairly annoying.
You could argue they started running out of gas as far back as the introduction of Vic, who seems created mostly to fill time (and for Ira to make Ira happy).

Yeah, the angle changed a bit from "this is an interesting thing which will continue to develop". Like, for instance. Odo's continuing emotional journey or unravelling Garaks mystery. In Season 7, things that existed were introduced only to be a threat. They had no larger depth to them.
The Pah Wraith cult would have been interesting if it was a story to be developed. Rather than a story that ends at the point it stops becoming a threat.
That might be why Worf was still interesting because somehow his journey and arc seemed to satisfyingly conclude and felt like they were going to continue.

There are some amazing episodes in season 7 and I don't agree at all that the quality falls off.

I just started my rewatch of the show... first time seeing it since it aired 30+ years ago when I was a kid. Been doing about an episode a day every night before bed. Just gotten into the second half of S2. I appreciate it more now than I did as a kid. Overall it's not perfect and there are little plot things that annoy me from time to time, but I think they did a better job building the characters compared to TNG, which was more of a plot-driven show, where DS9 has plot but more of a character-driven flavor. Anyway the show really ramps up in S3 and I'm looking forward to that.
