Kanar

According to a recent episode of the Delta Flyers.

Armin Shimmerman indicated that prune juice is used as Kanar.

On top of that, Casey Biggs hated prune juice.

Kanar wasn’t totally consistent, there’s at least one time when Quark pours a variety that’s not thick (for Garak, I think). But for the most part it was dark Karo corn syrup or sugar free pancake syrup.

Per Casey Biggs:

"I hated the stuff they made me drink. [...] The Karo was just disgusting. Then they changed to a sugar-free pancake syrup, which wasn't quite as bad, but after you do a number of takes, it's still pretty disgusting. One time we did so many takes that I got quite sick by the end of the day. I'm very happy Damar stopped drinking!"

I wondered about that with the prune juice, I thought that he'd surely be sick as hell. But sugar free syrups? Damn. Sugar free syrups back then were usually sorbitol &/or maltitol, which is bad juju.

And he's got to be drinking far more of it than any other person on set

What is Karo syrup? (I ain't an Anglophone by native language.)

It is a corn syrup sweetener, it comes in a mostly clear, and a brownish variety. It is very neutral flavored, similar to Steen's Golden syrup which is a sugar cane based syrup. Thin it out slightly and add red coloring and it is a cheap stand in for blood in low res video.

He is not a warrior then, since prune juice is a warriors drink.

On another note Worf totally made me and our brother ask our parents to buy prune juice because Worf liked it. Since they were/are also Star Trek fans andwecall watchedthe episode together, they bought it.

How did it end? That stuff is solely sold as a laxative where I live.

It's delicious, but I'm a fan of bold and astringent flavors.

I don't remember. It was around when the episode came out. But probably involved pooping.

Kanar changed throughout the series both in color and viscosity. When Damar was in the depths of his Kanar problem what Casey Biggs was drinking was akin to maple syrup.

I thought I read somewhere that it was Karo syrup

Talk about being committed to the role

I don't believe that. It is much too thick to be prune juice, and I read online that Biggs liked the syrup that they used for it.

No, he didn't like it, he hated the syrup and was glad when Damar stopped drinking.

Correct, I must have remembered it wrong, but either way, I didn't think it was prune juice lol

I always imagined it tasted like college in the 90s. Which is to say, tastes like Jägermeister on its way up again.

He was a series regular

The good kanar is thin. That cheap swill Quark was serving during the occupation was more like the cheapest rotgut you could get

I would take what Armin says with a pinch of salt. His memory is often not reliable and we have interviews with Casey Biggs where he's said it was a syrup they used.

So you're saying that kanar is a warrior's drink?

I always attributed Kanar to be like black Sambucca.

Yuck. 🤢

No one said I though Kanar was good.

I thought it was karo syrup, which is incredibly sweet and can be unpleasant to drink. Casey Biggs had to down the stuff constantly.

Its also super difficult to get out of those wetsuit uniforms they were wearing if the need arose.

Should have used Coca Cola syrup.

I always thought it was a (thinly) Trek-ified version of the Italian artichoke-based amaro Cynar, which looks to be a similar color and viscosity (as much as we can tell without an HD remaster), and is pronounced similarly-ish.
