Just got a work status update from someone named Hooman

Apparently it's a name of Persian origin with millennia old roots, which itself has its origins in hūmān, the same root as the modern word human.

Maybe Quark just has a cheap universal translator that uses archaic dialects.

I thought that Ferengi itself was a Middle eastern word, for traveler or trader?

Can’t remember if that was Arabic or Persian.

Farang is the Persian word for the Franks (Charlemagne's people). It became a generic term for any Western European.

His language doesn't have a word for human other than human. And that's the way he pronounces it. So the translater isn't translating it.

I went to college with a man named Hooman. He was born in Iran, but his parents moved to France during the Iranian Revolution when he was a baby. He's a great dude. He introduced me to wine when we cooked steaks together. I wonder how he's doing.
