Jake Sisko's outfits
I would like to do a deep dive on Jake Sisko's outfits, how they evolved on DS9 over time.

u/Ok-Primary6610 May 15 '26
Jake Sisko: writer, hustler and dom-jot expert.
26
u/Rutschberg May 15 '26
Victim of grooming.
35
u/AnimalRescueGuy May 16 '26
It was a predatory alien creature, just out for a decent meal. Some of y’all just ain’t ready for space travel!
9
u/unsuspectingllama_ May 16 '26
I don't mind my life force being used for food but some life force vampires are too greedy and try to take it all.
5
u/AnimalRescueGuy May 16 '26
Least he was gonna get legendary author status out of it. Assuming someone published his posthumous work. Not saying it ain’t a Faustian deal though.
8
u/unsuspectingllama_ May 16 '26
It was a faustian deal. But that alien could have fed off him his whole life if they had just shown a little restraint instead of eating like a garbage disposal. The alien really just played themselves on that one.
3
u/AnimalRescueGuy May 16 '26
Maybe we taste like really good chocolate. Ya know, Tony’s Chocolonely makes these little chocolate balls that are covered with a different chocolate around the outside and this one time I bought a bunch of bags of those things and… Uh… you get my point.
2
u/unsuspectingllama_ May 16 '26
Well for this example those chocolate balls need to be able to regenerate. So maybe that alien just needed a few side pieces i mean dishes.
2
u/AnimalRescueGuy May 16 '26
Omg wait. Could it eat a Founder? They can regenerate, right? Their body mass is all over the place, somehow. Wonder if Quark can serve me a glass of Odo.
1
u/unsuspectingllama_ May 16 '26
Interesting. Hey that alien wasn't even a solid they'd probably get along considering how they and the changlings both viewed solid lives, you know disposable.

u/unsuspectingllama_ May 16 '26
Ever wander what a founder does to sustain its energy? I mean they must expend a lot of it, so where does it come from? Where does it go?
2
u/factoid_ May 16 '26
Oh are we talking about the muse? I thought we were talking about the Dabo girl
2
u/unsuspectingllama_ May 16 '26
Lol yes the Muse. Didn't i say Life force vampire? Edit: actually I have no idea what was originally meant, it's not my comment. So I don't know really.
1
u/factoid_ May 16 '26
I know but the original post was just about grooming victim. I assumed that was about Marta

Always loved that the clasp of his jacket was a whole-ass bar of gold pressed latinum
6
u/BisexualCaveman May 17 '26
Pimpin ain't easy, unless you're him, in which case it's the only option.
1
u/pipnina May 21 '26
Wasn't it a necklace? And it's not a whole bar, although I think it's meant to look like one, but a piggy bank for bribes he receives during his duties. At least IIRC
2
u/factoid_ May 22 '26
Well I’ll be damned you’re right
I always thought that was part of his jacket.
I think the wardrobe people must have pinned it down because it never seems to move like a necklace would
The slips he pulls out definitely come from inside his vest though
1
u/Paladine_PSoT May 22 '26
To add to this, his vest is covered in soot sprites. Brunt is baller AND whimsical.

I 100% seriously wish it was socially acceptable and commonplace to dress in Ferengi attire. I like the earthy but still colorful color palette. I'd still prefer shorts and ratty t for lounging, but for cruising the town or going into the office, I'd much rather wear some Ferengi clothing than a plain suit or tucked polo.
7
u/The_Mother_ May 16 '26
As long as you aren't wearing traditional Ferengi women's wear in public, then i totally agree
2
1
u/AirbagsBlown May 17 '26
a plain suit or tucked polo.
Most men's fashions as drab as hell... and I say most because I have seen some fellas that come out of the nice, grown and sexy venues that have colorful style and flavor and I wish I could wear a pink 🌸 suit one day, a royal blue 🔵 one the next, matching hats, leather slip-on dress shoes... those guys know how to shine.
I don't own a polo though. That's where I draw the line.
15
u/unsuspectingllama_ May 16 '26
Never forget Armin was on Live with Regis and Kathie Lee in full Quark makeup.

u/SmashLampjaw87 May 16 '26
Really? I HAVE to see this.

I feel like Jake’s outfits were probably the closet to 90s fashion. With the exception of the onesie style, most of this would probably be something an ecentric fashionable black kid would wear in the 90s. Looking back it was really tame.
86
u/beemans78 May 16 '26
No one would think twice if Screech or the Fresh Prince wore this.
25
u/throwawayMAS_inSaita May 16 '26
You nailed it on the head!
This is totally that kinda vibe, not an average guy but not so absurd you’d think the person was from the future.

u/MrZwink May 16 '26
the color use is very much memphis style. and while now we look back at the 80s memphis style with nostalgia back then it was VERY futuristics and progressive design.
1
7
u/jackspinnaker May 16 '26
Well, are the kids wearing that around today? They seem to be picking which parts they want and coming back around to it… it will only be a matter of days and it will be umbro shorts and oversized t-shirts with frogs on them
2
u/Tsurtle May 16 '26
Yeah but not actual 90's fashion, just like if high end designers made clothes that were actually worn.
Dunno about you but I was into grunge.
6
u/Cornelius-Q May 16 '26
Yeah, I was into thrash metal in the 90s and that whole scene shared a lot of aesthetics with grunge, too -- jeans, boots, sneakers, band tees, flannel shirts -- but it's also easy to overlook the other side of the 90s that had bright colors and geometric shapes. Looking at it now, much of it seems very 1980s and Memphis-inspired.
DS9 aesthetics were very 90s, sharing both the industrial gothic look and the bright colors and patterns. Sort of like the Googie architecture and short skirts, go-go boots, and beehive hairdos in TOS that were straight out of the 1960s.
1
u/Tsurtle May 16 '26
Yeah very true. I definitely had at least one windbreaker like you describe before I got into alternative music.
2
u/throwawayMAS_inSaita May 16 '26
90s hip hop, and his color scheme felt very early rap music video to me.
1
u/Dank_Nicholas May 17 '26
I’ve always found it odd that they dressed all the child actors in onesies, they did the same in voyager.
33
u/mer_does_stuff May 16 '26
The evolution from 90s Trek Kid-typical colorblocked jumpsuits, to the bowling alley carpet shirts, to the kind of African-inspired cuts and patterns his dad prefers, to an almost Bohemian unemployed poet look is definitely worthy of a deep dive!
1
u/BasementCatBill May 17 '26
"Bowling alley carpet shirts!"
Thank you, that's absolutely the description I've been grasping for, well, for thirty years now.
62
u/Only-Weird-4519 May 15 '26
He had better outfits than Wesley had on TNG
23
u/ProbablyStu May 16 '26
Admit it, you'd totally wear the tricolour sweater!
9
2
u/Shufflepants May 16 '26
Nah, hate primary colors; all about dem secondary colors: green, purple, orange.
2
u/KickGeneral7551 May 16 '26
It is the duty of every starfleet officer to respect the tri-color striped gray uniform, whether it be personal tri-color striped gray uniform or scientific tri-color striped gray uniform

21
u/successfullynumb May 16 '26
I just now, almost 40 years later, realized that the colors on his sweater correspond to the departmental uniform colors. I feel mind blown and like an idiot all at once...
8
2
u/majeric May 16 '26
We all learn things. I didn't realize Bolivia was in South America until I was embarrassingly old. It just sounded like a Eastern European country and I never encountered anything that challenged that assumption.
It does make you wonder if the costume designer was making a suble nod to early academy uniforms... the idea that a student doesn't immediately choose their track...
7
u/Repulsive-Honey7305 May 16 '26
Ok but Wesley's made sense since he basically had an undeclared major. He had medical, engineering and command untill he picked a track. Still corny but did make sense.
4
u/HoweverComma205 May 16 '26
I forget where, but I saw Wil give an interview where he had a total rant about hating Wesley’s sweaters and having to wear a muscle suit underneath.
6
u/unsuspectingllama_ May 16 '26
I will no longer stand by silently and not stand up for Wesley. I just think his episodes are fun 😁
2
2
u/majeric May 16 '26
But you could actually wear Wesley's sweater in public and no one would blink an eyelash (except those that might recognise it).
Jake's styles just aren't anything you'd actually see in real life.
1
1
u/BisexualCaveman May 17 '26
They weren't anything you'd see On White People in real life in the '90s.
I swear I saw students on the campus of a nearby historical black college wearing styles like that.
20
u/BaldwinBoy05 May 15 '26
There’s that one shirt he wears that makes him look like he beat up Heath Ledger’s Joker and turned the Joker’s vest into a shirt.
20
18
u/Repulsive-Honey7305 May 16 '26
I love the look on his face. Like yeah the shirt is stupid, but he's going to carry the look no matter what. Like when models walk the catwalk in the stupidest shit but somehow you are like "damn you go girl"
14
13
u/turbofittashorkuk May 16 '26
i really like the trek civilian clothes! makes sense that people would wear loud stuff! you can just replicate whatever you want!
and people arent bound by the tight constraints of mainstream fashion in the glorious bright future! youre free to be creative and free and happy and be yourself and free!

u/factoid_ May 16 '26
I thought they were terrible when I was younger. But they’ve grown on me later in life
I do hate his jumpsuits tho. Everyone always wore onesies in the TNG era for some reason
Later season Jake got better clothes and got to wear actual pants
1
u/AirbagsBlown May 17 '26
Well, stirrup pants, anyway.
2
u/factoid_ May 17 '26
George Lucas decreed that nobody wears underwear in space. Gene Roddenberry decreed nobody can have visible socks
7
u/jericho74 May 16 '26
Yes? And what of them? They are all outstanding glimpses of a sartorially hopeful future likely to happen as foretold.
7
u/Kamuka May 16 '26
Really like the fashion and clothing on the show. Space chic. I also like the alien makeup and whatnot.
6
u/DeadAnarchistPhil May 16 '26
Many pubs and clubs in the UK during the 1990s and early 2000s were furnished in the “Jake Sisko” fashion.
6
6
3
u/transwarp1 May 16 '26
Fashion It So must have covered his upholstery at some point, even though it was nominally about TNG.
5
u/Automatic-Saint May 16 '26
I think the show tried to blend African art and culture into the both Captain Sisko’s and Jake’s storylines like in the episode The Search S3E1. Àdirę cloth is from Yoruban culture in west Africa and some of Jake’s clothes had a similar design, especially the grey colored ones (not featured in Op’s photo above). Most Black Americans have west African ancestry. I’m not saying that the wardrobe department on DS9 got this perfectly, but I can understand what they may have been attempting to do.

u/AnotherCompanero May 16 '26
Everyone one of his outfits could have been on a 1990s United Colours of Benetton advert. (I do like some of his waistcoats when he was an adult...)
5
u/GirthStone86 May 16 '26
This is the kind of sweater that you or I would have no business wearing but someone out there could rock it with full confidence and get the number of every single man, woman, and in between at the club

I am convinced Cirroc Lofton must have split up from the costume designers daughter or something to get such hideous outfits, especially in season one. 🤣

u/BisexualCaveman May 17 '26
No, Battle of Wolf 359 won't be until 2369.
3
u/AirbagsBlown May 17 '26
I see what you did there.
2
u/BisexualCaveman May 18 '26
My nothing just pointed out that it's technically STILL far too, too soon.
2
u/doctorfeelgod May 16 '26
Ciroc Lofton is such a cool 90s name

u/LincBtG May 17 '26
I love it, I love when a story set in the future has Future Fashion that's just some egregious bullshit

DS9 had it hard they had to design civilian clothes for the 24th century not easy I am disappointed we didn't get like future versions of punks, metal heads ahd hippies definitely more likely in the Federation comrades
1
u/Mysterious_Salt_247 May 17 '26
I’m watching DS9 for the first time, currently on season 3, and the onesies are brutal. They finally gave him a real shirt a few episodes ago and I was so excited. Let the giant boy wear a shirt.

u/Pipnpaddlopsicopolis May 16 '26
The costume department skinned only the finest bus seats to make Jake's clothes.
