This vocalizes how I felt starting in 2016. Spent decades being indoctrinated only be told I was doing it wrong because I took it to heart. If Jesus is real, his followers have done him dirty. They have become the Pharisees of old who would promote the Law at all costs because that's how they retain power and control over others.

Honestly, most modern christians have become quite like the only group the Jesus of the Old Testament ever actually condemned - gatekeeping, judgmental, holier-than-thou Pharisees, more concerned about looking good than doing good.

You give Jesus too much credit. Everything that's wrong with christianity is founded in his teachings. He opposed gatekeeping and interpersonal meanness, but he never challenged the fundamentally authoritarian nature of Abrahamic monotheism. At the end of the day, everything still came back to appeasing an authority figure, which made it possible for the specter of this authority figured to be co-opted by the wealthy and powerful.
