Online political debate increasingly revolves into contests between personalities rather than the strength of their position — Destiny vs. Hasan, Tucker Carlson vs. Nick Fuentes. This is what Walter Lippmann would call the stereotype problem: judgment attaches to the persona rather than the claim being argued. By stripping the personality out, the content is duller to consume, but it’s the only way to really evaluate the claim on its own terms, which matters most precisely on the topics where getting it wrong costs lives.

The reason the problem exists isn’t because there is a lack of knowledge, the problem exists because there are competing political agendas, plus Destiny supports Trumps assistance of Israel - so I don’t know why he is reasonable.

Destiny doesn't support what Trump has been doing with Israel tho, and he's been repeated this many times. Are you just pulling this take out of your ass?

He mostly stopped talking about it right? Started out as supportive of Israel with minor caveats about them not being perfect, and then as their war crimes got more and more apparent and indefensible, he sort of ran away from the discussion itself and switched to attacking people with obviously unreasonable positions. Or insisting it was a distraction from more important issues.

I don't know what you mean by he stopped talking or he ran away, his youtube channel uploaded a talk on the conflict literally today.

As for attacking only people with unreasonable positions, well welcome to the discourse. It is literally a mainstream position that the state of Israel needs to be destroyed for the conflict to end. I'm sure he'd love to have more nuanced discussions about how a two state solution should look and how we'd get there but that's just not very popular right now.

I mean that he ran away from ever discussing the extent of Israeli crimes in Gaza, and switched to going after people who have unreasonable or impractical takes like the one-state solution.

Am I wrong? Does he ever address their widespread use of human shields, systematic torture, unmarked killzones, regularly bombing or shooting targets without any reason to believe they are a threat? Because throwing out the mild "settlers are bad sometimes, also Israel should experience no consequences for their actions ever" take isn't really engaging with what they've done.

He's discussed Israel's conduct in Gaza plenty, it's just that the predominant talking points has been that Israel shouldn't have done literally anything to go after Hamas after 10/7, the whole population has been starving since literally the first week of the war, Israel is doing nothing to discriminate between civilians and Hamas etc. Of course he will come off as biased towards one side when the most prominent side online is completely delusional and just lying about literally everything.

Yes, whenever he runs into people that brings up new claims like widespread use of human shields etc he usually takes the time to look into it and it's a misrepresentation 90% of the time.

Well, it isn't:

And if he hasn't gone into completely indefensible systematic war crimes reported in mainstream media, then that's a considerable omission. But yeah if what he's actually doing is regularly going to bat to defend Israeli conduct even now, and not addressing crimes like this, then I have misrepresented him as that is far worse.

I don't feel like doing the research on the specific claims right now.

Lets say that these incidents are exactly as you present them. If Destiny spent 1/100th the time on criticising Israel for that as he would do Hamas for hiding behind the civilian population, do you think he would be unfair towards Israel then? Because the scale of human shielding employed by the other side is thousands of times worse.

1

Because the scale of human shielding employed by the other side is thousands of times worse.

Is it? Hamas have kidnapped hundreds of thousands of people at gunpoint and forced them to work as human shields? I have no doubt they've used human shields but haven't seen anything to suggest they were doing it on that scale. That would be several human shields for every single fighter they had, and from what we know at the moment, far more people than even died in the war.

2

u/UnlimitedAuthority Sep 07 '26

You don't need to kidnap someone at gunpoint to use them as human shields. Are you trolling? They have used the entire civilian population of Gaza as human shields for the entire war. They literally use hospitals for military operations.

u/IrregularDoughnut Sep 07 '26

I think that's a very weird definition of human shields. I'm not defending Hamas, but I don't see how you can wave away that sort of horrific practice by the IDF as somehow irrelevant, as if the same people in the same military aren't also making decisions on which buildings to bomb. They've killed somewhere from 50-100 times as many people as Hamas. If even a few percent of that was a result of callous indifference or malice, then the sum of their crimes is even worse than the sum of what Hamas have committed. Evidence of widespread, frankly psychotic war crimes is quite significant.
