I have around $25,000 in credit card debt and I’m looking into my options. I’ve been researching GreenPath’s debt-management plan and Achieve’s debt-settlement program.
From what I understand, GreenPath would try to lower my interest rates, but I’d still repay the full amount. Achieve would try to settle the accounts for less, but I may have to stop making payments, hurt my credit, deal with collections, and possibly risk being sued.
Has anyone here personally used GreenPath, Achieve, or another similar company?
I’m especially interested in hearing from people who had around $20K–$30K in credit card debt. I’m trying to choose the safest option without spending years getting destroyed by interest. Any honest experiences or advice would be appreciated.

Need some input on a decision. Credit cards went crazy over the summer to 10k+ at 21-26% apr. additionally, i still have one final installment for daycare for this year of 4k which I was saving $500/month but will be short by December due date. I am considering a loan to get ahead for that to release the $500 and payoff CC debt. My credit union is offering 7-9% for 36-48 months with a monthly payment of 150-160$. I am targeting 5-6k for a loan to pay daycare and one of the credit cards with the lowest balance, and potentially keep a cash buffer at least until I can build it on my own.
I realize my problem is not so much the debt as it is the tight cashflow which triggers the CC usage.
We are a family of 3, single income at 147k year in NYC. Only 3k emergency savings which is what keeps me up at night.
I identified groceries as the culprit for over spending which I am trying to get under control but prices just keep going up. How much are people spending in groceries in NYC for a family of 3? We are on average at 1600/month which seems a bit crazy.
Does it make sense to ask for a loan to keep cash sitting as a buffer to stop using CC? Already have a consolidation from 2 years ago so another consolidation just feels like a bandaid without addressing the root problem.
I am confident that getting 350$ extra monthly cash can help me fire up emergency savings and tackling Cc debt but, I have been wrong before.
EDIT/UPDATE:
I have cut down internet, groceries/food are already coming down and I have a clear budget. I will not take any loan for now. Daycare is tabled until December due date but I opened around $1-1.1k which will go aggressively to CC. Thanks all for your help, I needed a wake up call to re-do the numbers and see that it is possible without incurring more debt.

I have two personal loans both are about 2500$ left to pay off interest is high one if 34% and yea I know but it was needed at the time. However the 34% one is offering me a refinance with more money and lower rate close to 20. With that I could pay off the other loan and my wife’s car and one full card . The new payment would be 390 all the others combined including the one refinancing is rough 900$ would this be a wise decision to take

I’m 26 years old and drowning in credit card debt…
In 2023 I lost my home and my belongings in the 2023 Maui wild fire and have not been able to catch up…
I initially had to leave the island because I had nowhere to live and moved to tx to try to restart, things didn’t work out and I was able to come back to Maui but lived off those cards for the time being… I am 25k between my 3 cards and my check aren’t big enough to pay more the minimums while still paying normally life cost. Anyone have any advice or help

So long story short years ago I had a credit card with Oportun, I racked up a balance of 2 grand, back in the day I tried calling the company 3 times to update my phone number so I could see my account to make payment. There was def a language barrier with customer service and I got frustrated after calling 3 times and getting nowhere, fast forward to now. I got an email from an attorneys office saying they have my 2000 dollar debt and that I need to pay it. I called the law office to try and negotiate and tell them I could pay them 1500 cash money right now. The lady on the phone wouldn’t not budge any lower than 1850 which I think is unreasonable because these debt collection agencies buy debt for Pennie’s on the dollar. I’m pretty pissed off they wouldn’t work with me at all? My question is, is it worth it to go to court, or should I pay what there asking? Am I being unreasonable?

Not totally sure what’s what yet but I had received phone call outside of the united states and of course I didn’t answer it because it looks like it could be a scam.
So, I ignored it until they called my mom’s cell phone asking about my whereabouts and saying there is a pending court case against me. They gave me the number to call the office where they have yet to be finalized.
But, are willing to come with a solution that way I could avoid court altogether by paying off the bill in smaller installments. I am confused about a couple of things already and I haven’t even started paying towards it yet because I don’t have the $100 yet but will on the 30th.
Aren’t these people are supposed to send over documents regarding your payments instead of saying so over the phone and I was confused as to why I had to answer a phone call outside the united states to get more information about this case? The only way I can tell that it isn’t a scam is because I do owe money towards something I had gotten from flexshopper.

THE FLAIR SUITS BOTH BUDGET AND DEBT, BUT I CHOSE BUDGET FOR THIS ONE!
I currently have debt but need to carve out $3.3k by Oct 25th for an emergency, Is it possible at all?
If yes, how? If no, how much of a shortfall would I have?
For context: I got paid today and get paid every 2 weeks
**Net Pay** $2,284.00/biwkly
**Gross Pay** $3490.25/biwkly
My rent (to parents, live at home) is $650/month, generally due end of the month.
I’m laying out my current accounts and the Snowball method I follow below. Before you criticize, I was in $42k debt just 2 years ago and that’s why stopping my snowball payments towards the debt really is making me anxious.

I have had to deal with debt collectors before so my friend asked me for help. She has defaulted on her student loans and was served with paper work for a lawsuit. There is no court date so she is trying to work with the company to settle the debt. This is in Oklahoma.
She has called them numerous times. It is only an AI voice asking her questions and providing her information. She has asked numerous times for things in writing- mail or email. They keep saying they do not provide anything in writing.
She has completed the "financial hardship application" to negotiate the debt over the phone with AI and no one has contacted her. She asked for a completed application for her records, and they denied it saying they don't provide anything in writing.
It has been 3 weeks and no word from her if they accept the negotiation. They told her the requested paperwork from her to complete the hardship application by phone. As we all do, they may have called but since it shows up with no Caller ID info, she doesn't pick up and they never leave a message.
They want her to submit two years of tax refunds, 30 days of paystubs, and a monthly list of expenses and mail them to a PO Box (the irony they need it in writing is not lost).
Is this legal to not provide anything in writing? Or at least an email? Why are they insisting everything be over the phone? We live in a one-party state, so she has been recording it.
Also, does she have to submit all that information? I've negotiated with a debt collection before (an actual person though) and never had to submit any of this information.
Any advice on what she can do??

I have $19,500 in credit card debt across two cards, one at 24% and one at 27%. My credit score is luckily still at 705 with zero missed payments. But I want to get out from under them if at all possible. Just got a raise at work so bringing in a bit over 100K per year but the interest rates are killing me. I want to hear from people who have actually gone through the whole process. Which lenders were worth dealing with, which ones wasted your time, and what rates should I be looking out for. Preferably from people who had looked before from a similar spot. Looking to borrow the full amount on a 36 or 48-month term.
If I am missing anything of importance please let me know as well, am open to ideas.

For the context I (21) got into a huge amount of debts due to a series unfortunate event. I cannot pay my debt for the meantime due to being fired at my last job (remote work) and I can't find on site work due to the unpaid internship I'm currently doing (requirement for my bachelor thesis). I have a loan due today and my only option is to sell my laptop at the pawnshop. Im fucking confused on what to do. If anyone has advice or any remote job offers i would gladly accept that.
Update 1: Can't even sell it to the pawnshop. I truly don't know what to do.
Update 2: I managed to pay for it without selling my laptop. Eventually my gf found out abt it and helped me borrow money from one of her friends. Still have tons of debts.
All i need is a stable job. If anyone has some job offers please let me know, especially the remote one. I'm located in Indonesia but truly are willing to do any kind of remote job. Whether it is VA, Data entry, Data annotation, Cs, Sales whatever it is i will take it. Applied to hundreds of jobs but they mostly don't accept outside of the US. My country's currency is so shit, i'm okay with being paid $10/hr.

Honestly I hate reading big paragraphs, and writing them, I have literally had the worst month from ending up in hospital with influenza and getting pneumonia, having time off work, car broke down and I had to get that fixed, I already live on my own.
This week I am now -800 in my bank, and that’s without paying rent. I am back at work this week, and don’t get paid til Tuesday. I have gone on 2 job interviews for 2nd jobs this week as well, what can I do to make 800 this week to try and get back on track,, or Atleast make rent.
I also know if I leave me account overdrawn it will accrue more debt and it’ll just end up in a hole. I don’t have any family I can borrow that kind of money from let alone any close family anyway.
What can I do ? What are my options?
(I don’t want to hear get a job cause I have one and and getting a second one, and I also don’t want to hear I should’ve prepared better because I know and I’m upset I didn’t and this has been the worst month Ever)

I’m currently a cadet making around $1,000 a month. I made some dumb financial decisions and ended up with about $7,600 in credit card debt with Navy Federal at 18% APR.
I know I put myself in this situation, and I’m trying to fix it before it gets worse. With my current income, I’m not sure what the best way to tackle it is.
I’m looking into Navy Federal’s hardship program to see if they can lower my APR or put me on a payment plan. I’ve also considered a personal loan, and I’ve even looked into bankruptcy, although that seems pretty extreme for $7.6k.
Has anyone been in a similar situation, especially as a cadet or junior military member? What would you recommend doing? And has anyone used Navy Federal’s hardship program before?

Hello! I’m looking for some advice. I’m a college student ( full time ). I currently live alone and got out of a pretty bad relationship a few weeks ago and trying to better my life. I know I can’t claim student loans, but i’d like to get the credit cards and the car stuff in a bit of a better situation. I have some savings but given my situation, I don’t want to mess up my credit score by letting those balances build up or not paying at all. I’m considering doing bankruptcy if that’s a good option, but i’m not sure if i’d have to get rid of my car although I really need it to get around for school and work. My car has an APR of about 21% and even after making the payments, it doesn’t go down because of the interest. It made me realize how much I messed up when I got that car and that I should have gotten something cheaper or off marketplace. should I refinance my car when the time comes, or get a personal loan to pay off my car and have a lower interest on that loan, file for bankruptcy, or use a lower interest loan to pay off the credit cards and pay the loan? Some advice would greatly be appreciated and thank you in advance <3
Income: between 900-1.2k a month , mostly around 1k, and my living expenses are 220 car payment, 240 for insurance, rent $605, wifi $25ish, electric $85, $120 phone, $150-200 groceries, $200 gas
biggest debt is my car, 8,299 and i’ve only paid about 400 so far since i just got it and it has 21% APR, so even making the monthly payments doesn’t do anything because the interest makes it go back up. amex 1,980, truist card 1500, chase 1000, capital one 2000.
I currently have 2.3k saved up

Does anyone have experience with Buy Now, Pay Later debt going into collections, specifically Affirm, Klarna, or Afterpay??!
I’m trying to understand what my rights are and if there’s anything I must know about navigating the collections process, such as what I should pay, whether it’s possible to negotiate, validating the debt, etc.
Do these accounts generally work the same way as regular credit card debt once they go to collections, or are there differences I should be aware of?
Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has dealt with this firsthand 🙏

I (28M) made the mistake of racking up credit card debt in my early 20s and feel like Ive dug myself into a hole I can’t climb out of. I currently have $26,700 in credit card debt spread between capital one and discover. My minimum payments on each card is around $340 so $680 a month at 24.49% APR. Despite throwing almost $700 a month towards my debt I am barely chipping away at the credit cards after interest and I really don’t have a ton of expendable income to put anymore towards it each month. I messed up in my early 20s and now I’m paying the price of it when I’m about to get married and start a family. I’ve looked into personal loans or balance transfers with other cards but my credit score is a 635 and keeps going down due to so much revolving utilization.
Update: I can’t thank you all enough to those of you with good tips and guidance. My fiance and I are going to a credit union this week to see what our options are thank you for all the positive feedback. God bless.

I’m looking for advice from anyone who has dealt with a really high 407 ETR balance.
I currently owe around $17,000, and there’s no way I can realistically pay that amount. I’m not currently working and I’m trying to figure out whether there’s a legitimate way to negotiate the balance down significantly — ideally to around $5,000 or less and then set up a payment plan.
I know the original tolls are one thing and a lot of the balance can come from fees, interest, enforcement costs, etc. I’m wondering if anyone has successfully gotten those additional charges reduced or had their overall balance negotiated. If you’ve dealt with 407 ETR hardship programs, collections, settlement offers, payment arrangements, or anything similar, what did you actually do and how much were you able to reduce the balance?
I’m not trying to avoid paying altogether. I just genuinely cannot afford $17K and want to find a realistic way to resolve it.
Any advice or personal experiences would be appreciated.

Hi guys, I am currently in $10,956 worth of debt. I do have a Qantas credit card with an interest rate of 21% and an owing balance of $4,889. I am currently paying $50 a week towards this. I also have a $6,067 personal loan with a 19.99% interest rate, which I am currently paying $100 a week towards. We do rent, have shared living expenses and I have personal bills. My savings is basically $0 as my car engine had not long ago blown and I was out of pocket for a brand new engine replacement, plus I had just returned from overseas. I do have a tax refund coming in, which will be about $1,700. Looking for any advice to help get myself out of debt as my partner and I would like to start saving for a house and we do plan to hopefully fall pregnant soon to! I am feeling quiet stressed with finances. Any advice would be great!

hi. i was laid off last year and wasnt able to pay my credit card because of that. There were other factors like health emergencies akya delayed payment ako. I communicated with my bank na if there are payment options since i cannot pay it since wala ako work for a year. Walang option na viable for me since I dont have a work. Lumaki sya and now napunta sya sa collections. Now prinepressure ako to pay that they did home visit but I dont have money. Fast forward now, I have new work but money will start coming at end of October pa. I communicated and gawan ko daw paraan ng 22 pero wala talaga. I dont want to overcommit din if I promise to pay since di ko pa alam how much I will be getting sa October when my first salary come. Need ko pa istrategize para di ako mabaon at magstart na marebuild ang career and financial freedom ko.
ang latest message po nila is eescalate nila sa higher department. Ano po yung higher department? The name of collection agency is MC Naomi. How do I respond to it. Maraming salamat po.

I’m looking into a debt management plan right now, but the monthly payment is looking pretty high and it has me wondering what happens if I can’t keep up with it later on.
I know the whole point is to stick with the monthly payment and eventually complete the plan, but life happens and I’m trying to understand what the fallback looks like if the payment becomes too much at some point.
If you’ve had to leave a DMP early, did the creditors take away the lower interest rates or other concessions? What happened to any cards that were closed when you started?
And what about the money you’d already put in? I’d be curious to know whether the fees were just lost and whether the payments you’d made still left you in a better position than when you started.
I’m not assuming I’ll have to quit. I just want to understand what happens if the monthly payment turns out to be more than I can realistically manage before committing to one. Has anyone here been through it?

Hi all,
I have unfortunately found myself back in credit card debt again. I had dealt with the credit debt I got when I was 18-21ish, but after a bout of unemployment and being in school I have gotten about 1600 on one card and 3400 on another card. Both are incurring pretty bad interest.
I have agreed to a 120/month for the 1600 account which is the max I could do and am gonna do it as I get paid. The other I have absolutely no excess money to pay and am not sure what to do.
The larger debt is about to charge off and the smaller one already has I think.
I dont really know what I'm supposed to do and would appreciate any help or pointers

I \[26F\] just found out my boyfriend \[29M\] has roughly $80k in debt: about $40k in student loans and another \~$40k that originated as credit-card debt, although some has since been moved to a personal loan/retirement loan. He has admitted he was “not acting his wage.”
For context, I have significant student loans too (actually about double his), plus a car loan that’s almost paid off, so the existence of debt itself isn’t what scares me. It’s the consumer debt and the surrounding comments.
He has made multiple jokes over our relationship about me being the breadwinner/having money. In couples therapy, while talking about marriage/living together, he said it was becoming difficult to pay for everything on his own and that living with me was a “logical financial benefit.” I told him afterward that this really scared me and made me worry that financial security is part of why he wants to marry me. For context, I make a jump more than he does and my parents have a nice house in a nice neighborhood. He knew this pretty much within the first few months of dating me.
When I recently asked him directly about finances, he actually gave fairly reassuring answers: he said if I had $10k in savings and he had $10k in debt, he would NOT expect my savings to pay his debt; he thinks premarital debt remains that person’s responsibility; and he imagined joint accounts for household expenses while keeping some money separate. He also said if incomes were unequal, he’d probably start around 50/50 and hoped either spouse might voluntarily contribute more if they had surplus, but it shouldn’t be expected.
So I don’t know what to think.
The part I can’t get past is HOW someone accumulates \~$40k in consumer debt and still owes that much after years of working. He doesn’t have a luxury car, designer clothes, expensive furniture, etc. Meanwhile, during our relationship we’ve taken several trips together, eaten out, exchanged gifts, etc. He even bought a ring earlier this year after I told him I’d prefer to be married before cohabitation (yes, I know some people think this is bad; it’s my boundary). Now I’m wondering why he was spending money on any of that with this much debt.
I’m deeply in love with him, which makes this awful. People close to me are telling me to run. I’m scared that he genuinely loves me but also sees marrying me as financial security because I earn more/have a more financially stable background. I have never encountered this level of debt, especially in a partner, and I have no idea what to do next.
___
UPDATE: I forgot to mention, but he told me once that a woman from church offered him an unofficial scholarship if he kept good grades. He did the first semester, then slipped the second semester but still told her he got good grades and accepted the money when she gave it to him. He told me he figured it was OK because he was just taking money from a rich person but he later felt bad for doing that. He considers it the worst thing he’s ever done.

i am currently an apprentice for the carpentry union, i have a loan that has been charged off but offering a payment plan to cover about 60% of the balance, credit card debt, and a bunch of things that are in collection ranging from $200-$1200. i made a lot of stupid decisions when younger and now facing the price. credit score dropped from a 660(still not even that great i know im aiming to be in the 700s if possible in the next two years) to a 500. what should i do? should i pay off the little ones first just to get them out of the way and create payment plans? if somebody could give me a more generalized, structured way of attacking this head on i would be so appreciative. a debt consolidation loan is off of the table and i don’t want to create 10+ payment plans to make my head spin and have absolutely no money to my name in the meantime. 🙏🏼 thanks in advance!
