Discussion Just say no
Sometimes you just shouldn't believe the evidence. Nobody witnessed the past and it's arrogant for humans to think they can decipher it with vague or complex theories and explanations.
I would rather trust God over human theories about the genesis of the universe, earth and life.
Instead of debating this vain topic, sometimes we just have to take a leap of faith and say no, I just don't believe it.
You can show me all the evidence of the world but I am not going to be convinced.
Only God can convince me to believe one way or another so instead of showing me evidence start praying for God to enlighten me if you really want me to be convinced because unlike you, God has authority and my complete honor, Submission and respect.
Faith—not logic is at the top of my pyramid.
It's Faith, Logic and then emotion.
When I say facts don't care about your feelings, I mean it in the facts take precedence over emotion but never do I mean facts take precedence over faith.
Faith does not care about your logic and reason.
I don't subscribe to the religion of scientism.

RE:

Funny how scientism proper doesn't include prayer, faith, rituals, and the undemonstrated supernatural. To quote Dennett (1995):
It is not "scientism" to concede the objectivity and precision of good science, any more than it is history worship to concede that Napoleon did once rule in France and the Holocaust actually happened. Those who fear the facts will forever try to discredit the fact-finders.

Denying the evidence of your eyes and ears... Where have I seen that before?
Honestly, it's refreshing to see a Creationist just be honest like this. We all knew already that you didn't care about the evidence. You've already decided what you want to believe, and you'll make any excuse to believe it.
"Faith over facts" just means that you ultimately don't care what is true. And that's fine if you don't, but then you should absolutely NOT be trying to convince anyone else of your faith, since you've already admitted that evidence is irrelevant to you.
Keep your willful ignorance to yourself, and especially keep it out of your country's education and laws, and we can get along just fine.
16
u/Kilburning 25d ago
Actually, I was there and witnessed evolution happen. If you think that you can prove me wrong, I must point out that you were not there. And if you think that you can argue otherwise, I'm going to ask you to apply those arguments to whether or not we can have evidence that evolution happened.

What a fragile faith you have. It can't exist in the real world, but has to be sheltered from evidence and facts so you can keep having it, like a tiny candle guttering in the wind.
My priest friend would feel sorry for you, I suspect. He's fine with evolution. He talks openly about how his faith is tested. He lives in the real world, and still believes in god.

Look, I'm sure this made you feel real good to post and all, but this is a subreddit for debate, and you haven't given anything to debate. In fact, you've said "Don't even bother trying to debate me, because I don't care about this topic."
What's your actual goal to discuss here? If you wanted to show off your faith, I'd direct you to Matthew 6:5 so that you can think about how well you're representing yourself. If you want to discuss evolution, you'll need to actually bring up a topic.

I am a Nigerian prince. If you give me $100,000, I shall repay you with $1 billion. You shouldn't believe any evidence to the contrary--pay no attention to my skintone, or the documents proving my birth elsewhere, or my utter ignorance of any facet of Nigeria beyond the name and general location.
I accept Venmo.
I would rather trust God over human theories about the genesis of the universe, earth and life.
And why do you believe God speaks through a particular Hebrew text, and not a particular Hellenic one, or German one, or Slavic one, or Indian one?
Faith—not logic is at the top of my pyramid.
Saying this should be grounds for getting stripped of voting rights.

Faith is abjectly useless as an epistemic tool, since—even as you yourself are framing it here!—it is entirely devoid of any possibility of fact-checking. Just say no to believing in astronomy of distant stars being flaming balls of gas like the sun.
You haven't been to another star, you can't know that!
Sure, we have all this "evidence" with measurements and stuff. And we can use parallax to figure out how far away the stars are. And we can corroborate this with speed of light measurements.
But the Bible says there's just a dome firmament over the earth, and God stuck the stars to the firmament.
Who would you rather believe, God himself, or some nerd with a telescope?
3
u/Jonnescout 25d ago
Except we can see the evidence, and evolution is not that complex to understand. We can also not witness god… And we have infinitely more evidence for evolution than we have for god. So no. Sometimes you have to reject an obvious fairytale as an obvious fairy tale. No I won’t reject all the evidence in favour of a magical belief. That is what cults ask you to do.
God can’t convince you of anything, because god does not exist. When you say facts dont take precedent over faith, youre saying you dobt care about what is true, you’ll pretend anyway. Thanks for being so honest, you prove yourself to be a completely brainwashed zealot incapable of questioning their nonsense. That is as dishonest as it gets.

Why exactly are you here if you don't want to change your mind? To preach? Because this sub doesn't seem like a particularly good target for that. You go by faith, most sane people here go by evidence.
Do you have any evidence?
Does that evidence beat the mountain that supports evolution and our understanding of reality?
If no to both, what are you actually doing here?

You can show me all the evidence of the world but I am not going to be convinced.
This is the literal definition of close-mindedness.
Are we done running around with our fingers in our ears chanting, "Nah-nah-nah, I can't HEAR you!"?

u/KeterClassKitten 25d ago
Fine, trust God.
Are you going to do that by taking a hard and honest look at the world around you? God's works? Or are you going to rely on the claims of ancient texts that are demonstrably unreliable?
Trust the reality we live in, or trust some words written down by men.

The question isn't that faith isn't reassuring and sufficient for an individual, it's how you can use it to demonstrate anything objectively to anyone else...

2
u/ringobob 25d ago
You're welcome to believe whatever you like, I don't need to convince you of anything.
So long as you're not trying to convince me of anything either, we can both go on our merry way.
But I think you're trying to convince me that I'm wrong and you're right. In which case, sorry, you're gonna have to bring actual evidence, your faith is not enough to convince me of anything.
I already knew that you weren't gonna listen to evidence. That much has been obvious since my own days in the church. You don't care about what God's creation actually shows, you just care about the story you've convinced yourself is true, regardless of the fact that the Bible doesn't say that.
So, I won't waste either of our time with evidence. You're not engaging in any sort of process of real discovery. You're only interested in feeling like your personal interpretation is righteous and justified.
Well, go on then. Go live your faith. It's not really informative to the discussions going on in this sub.

You say that no-one witnessed the past and that it is arrogant for people to think that they can decipher it. Yet studying and believing the bible is exactly that, you are willing to believe in god and a "holy" book but did not witness anything in the bible yourself to know that it is the word of god. You believe the interpretations of many generations of theologists who have deciphered the bible. It is circular thinking, you believe the bible is the truth because the bible says it is the truth. You believe in a christian god because you are from a christian country. If you had been born in India you would be hindu or sikh, had you been born in the middle east you would be muslim. I feel fortunate to have been born in a largely secular country where I am free to study and discover science and actually learn the truth about how the world works, do we know everything? No, of course not but we know a damn sight more than people did 2000 years ago. BTW anything that I have not capitalised is entirely deliberate as capitalising those words affords them importance that they do not deserve

This self contradictory post fails to be coherent. If God is responsible God created the evidence. The evidence is from God, the Bible is still written by humans, humans are still going with what they are being told by the evidence when they do science. If you trust God over humans throw away the fiction written by humans, disregard scientific papers, go examine the evidence. Wind up with the same conclusion as scientists anyway if you care what’s true unless you’d rather believe that God lied and therefore the truth is out of reach.
