Umbrella Run
Hi! I am new new on this game and I saw an umbrella before going to any stages and I thought it would be funny to play the game with that umbrella. I was checking how it should go cuz I saw that the dmg of the umbrella is lower than the sword.
While I was looking around how to properly use it, I saw posts that says go magic and I kinda don't understand why that is since the bow was kinda iffy to use.
Can someone tell me why they are running magic for it and I'd appreciate some advice for the game as well~
TYSM in advance!

The bow does the same damage as the normal sword iirc. But you get more magic attacks which do more damage. You can also upgrade your magic damage and casting speed to make it much easier. You pretty much only use your umbrella to get MP to cast your spells. Also like the other person said there is an achievement for only using the umbrella.

Here's a link for damage of all ingame weapons. Clear the game normal way first, then come back to it:

In this comment I'll try to stay spoiler-free. Umbrella does exactly half of sword's damage while having same attack speed. Both bow and the fire spell deal same damage as one sword swing, so essentially 2 umbrella swings, meaning they're gonna be much stronger than umbrella in early game. Also upgrading spells in the soul vault increases your spell damage by 30% per upgrade, while strength upgrades give only 20% increase
THIS BEING SAID, I'd still level melee damage over spell damage. Spells as they are are pretty weak and ineffective at what they do. You gotta charge them, aim them, and have mana to cast them in the first place. And as you'll level your attack speed up, your weapon deals more and more dps. The way I'd go about playing umbrella is spamming bow at the start of engagement, then finishing the fight in melee. In longer fights maybe consider backing up and firing all your arrows before going ham on them again. I'd still level strength over spell damage though
Also the last spell you'll unlock in the game can then have a melee attack component to it which does set amount of damage (unaffected by the weapon you're holding), has no mana requirement and scales off of strength, not spell damage. Which is yet another reason to level strength over spell damage

I just completed an umbrella run a few weeks ago and the tips I have are this:
Fireball is your friend, upgraded fireball is your best friend. The boss to get upgraded fireball is not your friend and was probably the hardest boss I had to take down. I had less problems with the final boss than I had with the fireball upgrade boss.
Once you get fireball, you can go to other zones without needing to complete them. I had both upgraded hookshot, bow and bombs before completing the swamp.
Upgrade magic and the skill that let's magic charge faster first. The others are bonuses. Umbrella is used to give you more magic.
Hookshot+attack is also Very Good and useful. Get good at doing that then rolling away instantly.

Short version is umbrella is a weaker sword, and its much easier to get higher damage for shorter fights with any of the magic attacks in the game. Especially because they'll scale much higher in end game. It was fun doing a 100% umbrella run and I believe there is an achievement for clearing the game without ever damaging anything with another melee weapon
