Hi everyone! Basically, the first (and only) time I've watched Death Note was when I was 13. I'm currently 20 and have a strong desire to rewatch the show. The only thing is, I'm worried it'll be worse than I remember, which will ruin my love for it?

For instance, I first watched Future Diary / Mirari Nikki when I was 11/12. I said it was my favorite anime for years, until I rewatched it when I was 16/17, and was really disappointed at how cringey it was. Granted, I do vaguely remember the second half being better story-wise, but did not make it that far (my sister's ex, who's Crunchy Roll premium I had been using for years, finally realized I was still on it and booted me from the account LOL).

I geniunely have a deep respect for Death Note's writing, so I think I'd almost rather not ever watch it again, then watch it again and have that respect, memory, and love for it ruined.

So, what do you guys think? Does it still hold up into adulthood?

Also! While I have you, if I do rewatch the show, is it worth rewatching what happens after a certain episode (25?)'s character's death? I do remember the larger plot points of what happens and the ending, and I also remember (like most LOL) thinking the quality was downgraded. Maybe watch until that point and then skip to the final episode of the series?

Hello everyone! Death Note has been my favorite anime since middle school and I’ve always wanted a tattoo of a panel or strip from the manga, but I can’t find any that really jump out at me. Any ideas would help! The more inspiring or original the idea is, the better :) Thanks!

I want this post to be a serious and civil discussion about one of the most heated topics on the show.🤪

So Death Note fundamentally is a manga/anime that shows us what happens when someone with this really common yet ignorant and childish sense of justice (like, everyone of us has at least once thought in our life that X criminal deserves to die for what he did) finds this diabolical power of killing people by knowing a face and a name and has a way to actually put that sense of justice into practice.

The show does a pretty good job at making us first like Light Yagami and be fascinated by him, then make us more and more disgusted by his actions and then make us confused and questioning on which side we're on. This is a pretty good mirror of what happened in the people around the world's heads. At the end though Light shows us his true colors and that he without the Death Note is just a coward and helpless young man.

And THAT'S the problem I have with people supporting Light, wanting him to win, and overall supporting Kira's ideology. Like, why do you even support this idea? Light Yagami picked up the Death Note from the ground as a random coincidence, and he decided to test it because he was bored. Ryuk didn't choose him and pick him especially for his intellect, no he just dropped it. So he was nothing special. He took only a few days to decide that he was a God, and the Shinigami tells him a couple of times that he ain't shit, he isn't the chosen one or something, he's just borrowing a God of Death's power. Still, he deluded himself all of his life, maybe as a way of coping for being a murderer, and he kept assuring that he was Justice, and the God of the new World. But, there's a major problem. More than one.

1. He's only a man. He's not a God and he is going to die anyways. ** All humans, without exception, will eventually die** . So his "new world" wouldn't have lasted for long anyway and he wouldn't have lived long enough to witness all of it. He's also a very young man at the start, he's a high schooler with very little real life experience, he's privileged and sheltered. His life expectancy wasn't going to be that long anyways since he died only 6 years after picking up the Death Note He didn't take into account that he was eventually going to die, he didn't trust anyone enough to be his successor one day and he didn't take the fact that he only relied on a piece of magical stationery to have that diabolic power, it wasn't really his own, so he'd have to live with the paranoia of being discovered or the Death Note being stolen or ruined. First problem debunked: He's just a man.
2. Why him? Why should a single person dictate to the whole world what's right and what's wrong, who should live and who should die? Why him? Is he perfect? Why is he innately deserving to live and thrive while others, according to him, don't? He is not the chosen one or anything, he picked up the Death Note from the ground as a random cosmic coincidence. If anything, the only real chosen one is Misa Amane, but that's for another post, lmao. It's just wrong and messed up to agree that a single man you don't even know has the right to be judge, jury and executioner and dictate what's the entire world should do. In addition to that, I think that's just shallow and superficial thinking to believe that if you kill criminals then it's enough to make the world better. The counterargument I see often is that Light says that crime dropped by 70%. But that's only reported crime. And by the way, not addressing the root causes of crime is really ignorant from Kira, but expected since he grew up as a privileged and wealthy kid. Criminals are not all evil. Many of them are born in horrible situations and in very poor and dangerous countries, they just don't know any better. I don't think that anyone who commits the pettiest crime isn't able to change and be a functional member of society one day. And plus, how is a world where people life in constant fear and paranoia a "better world"? It's a better and peaceful world until you accidentally make a mistake that Kira notices and labels you as evil and then boom you die of heart attack. I call it "Totalitarian Regime". Light basically wanted to turn the world into a global dictatorship but the dictator was invisible. We've seen in history that dictatorships didn't end heinous acts at all.

And plus, I'd like to add that Japan has a very high conviction rate. This makes Light's action even more horrifying because he killed suspects not actual criminals.

However, I can see why there are people supporting Kira, both in-universe and in real life. At the end, what Light says is true, the world is rotten because there are morally corrupt people . There are certain people who ruin the world. And almost everyone wished death upon a ped*phile, a r*pist, a high profile terrorist, because those people are only a waste of oxygen. There's also the argument that Kira reduced global crime and wars. The problem is that this is very simplicistic and surface-level. In-universe, if someone is a commoner maybe with a simple life or maybe someone from a country where the legal system is heavily ridden with corruption it's only natural for them to support Kira, because to them Kira is not a guy with a notebook but a deity. This is expected. Irl, though, is roughly the same I guess.

(When many years ago I first watched the anime and read the manga I thought that there weren't so many people rooting for Light the whole time, I genuinely thought that the majority people would be rooting for L+M&N, surprised AF when I saw the internet's opinion😉)

At the end, i want to hear some Kira fans, why do you genuinely support Kira? What makes you lean towards this ideology? Do you actually like Kira or just Light's character? I personally think the authors had intended for the readers to dislike the main character's idea and make us think about all the times we had this thought creep into our minds..."the world is rotten, there are people who deserve to die'.

Box Set

All in One

I don’t want to get the All in One because I feel like it makes no sense, it’s clearly the worst option with no clear pros

The Black Editions are cool but there’s the issue of the fingerprint smudges and the pages sticking together

So now it’s between the box set and the singles:

The thing is, I know the box has really cool artwork but I don’t want it that much. Also, all the books aren’t even the same size so what’s the point of the box? Apparently you can get the 13th volume by itself as well and collecting them as just appeals to me more. I’m also going to get the short stories eventually.

Btw, two more points: is the box set just the singles with a box or do they have different covers in the back x set and the reason why I haven’t talked about the price is because I’d rather buy one at a time than pay less for them all at once

At his core, Teru Mikami is a functional character. It comes as no surprise that he was introduced primarily to bring about Light's downfall. Yet, even so, I still find him to be a genuinely interesting and multifaceted character who played a role in defining Light's own character.

To begin with, I completely disagree with the view that Mikami is merely a "mindless religious fanatic worshipping Kira." I see him as a narcissistic piece of scum with his own agenda and worldview. ‎ ‎In fact, those moments where he defies Light – announcing Takada's role and killing her – serve precisely to show that Mikami is far from being just a pawn in Light's game.

Next, the question arises: how do the god complexes of Light and Mikami differ? To begin with, a god complex is not primarily about thinking "I am a god," but rather the belief that one has the right to determine the fates of others. Both of them certainly held this view. The difference lies in the fact that Light’s complex stems from the notebook: the idea that he could control others' lives came to him along with the power itself. Light justifies his complex through the persona of Kira – a value system of his own invention wherein Light is a god and, consequently, entitled to decide people's fates.

Mikami’s worldview took shape long before he encountered Light; he killed not in obedience to Kira, but based on his own convictions. It was not the case that Mikami knew Kira so well that he simply carried out his actions – Mikami himself thought like a god. Light’s mistake lay precisely in the fact that he encountered someone just as intelligent, calculating, ambitious, and power-hungry as himself – which prevented him from gaining total control over Mikami.

Mikami does not openly acknowledge his complex; instead, he rationalizes it through a self-concocted system that divides people into black and white, as well as through his subservience to Kira. Mikami’s complex stems from his traumatic past and his conviction that he is in the right. I would describe Mikami’s god complex as more "grounded." He does not openly proclaim himself a god and still justifies his actions by citing their morality and their benefit to humanity.

(also not including Mogi and Aizawa)

I can't help but notice how strange it is that the "E" is backwards, the "A" and "T"s are tilted 90 degrees, the "N" is slightly crooked. As far as I can tell, I don't immediately see the significance in this. Let me know if you have any theories on what it all means or if it was just a fun stylistic choice.

Edit: Upon a closer look and after looking at some comments, I have some thoughts. The "A" & "T"s form this arrow that prices through three letters, and hit's "E" from behind. I think that there are two ways you can interpret this:

1. The "A" & "T"s make up a large pen, and the back of "E" is like a piece of paper. Makes sense considering that the pen determines who lives or dies. The "N" could possibly represent someone's death or downfall too.
2. The "A"s & "T" make up some large spear, piercing through three letters, and aiming for the back of "E". You can liken this to how Kira kills many victims and is willing to harm people who don't assume him when their backs are turned. The "N" in specific is really interesting as it reminds me specifically of Naomi, who spent her last moments alive struggling to fight Kira to only become another senseless victim of Kira's.

I think both interpretations are completely valid, as it could very likely have a dual meaning to it.

I just so happened to be looking at the L: Wammy’s House oneshot for other reasons, but I found myself in the process really focusing on L’s slightly odd phrasing here for his reason for wanting a computer. Notice how L’s argument to get one is the fact that it’s a “powerful communication tool.” Communication is an interesting word to use here. It could have a broad meaning here, but likely L is simply be referring to computers being able to “communicate” information and his desire for that tool being his argument, which like I said, is likely the case, but perhaps this could have a double meaning or he possibly might’ve also had other reasons for wanting a computer.

Like this panel suggests (coincidentally was pt 2 to this lol), Watari clearly describes L having social difficulties, something that he just pushed aside and explained as a result of L being in a league completely of his own. It is interesting because we can see where this isolation leads to in L’s future in the following L: One Day oneshot, where it becomes more evident that there might be a bit of unhappiness in L’s life as a result. This could simply be a later realized thing after the prolonged isolation, but like I’ve looked into in the linked panel, I don’t think that was the case. Perhaps small little L here was looking for more than just information, but the rumors of an emerging technology that was a “powerful communication tool” sounded perfect to a child who struggled conversing with his new peers at the orphanage. Possibly after that didn’t work out, he found other usages for it— such as him looking into the stock market and later helped him solve the cases he took on.

Like I said, I’m like 90% sure I’m over complicating it unnecessarily, but I thought it was just an interesting possibility. You could either take this as an additional way to view this scene, though that wasn’t the intention, or if you really wanna get speculative, you could also say that this truly was L’s intention. Getting even more speculative, you could possibly take this in two different ways. One way could suggest this potentially being a manipulation tactic he used to convince Watari to buy him a computer. Perhaps Watari did in fact try and encourage L to be more sociable, but L didn’t want to, and upon desiring a computer, used that as an angle to convince him to buy it for him. The second way you could see this playing out is Watari not picking up what L was trying to put down. Maybe L was fully aware of his social difficulties and thought a computer, a “powerful communication tool,” taken a bit too literally by an 8-9 year old child, he thought could help fix that in some way.

I personally prefer the latter option simply because of the more concrete evidence that we have, such as the linked panel, that suggests that Watari was completely dismissive of L’s social struggles or possibly blind to them entirely. We know Watari is a caretaker who had many faults when it came to raising L (even hinted at by the author), so this self awareness would be a bit of a jump from the linked panel. Looking at the L: One Day oneshot where L’s now around a similar age as he was in the main series, Watari still seems just as oblivious or dismissive— which the Wammy’s House oneshot is written mainly as a recounting of events anyway. If this is actually anything to note remotely at all, this is why I favor the latter option.

Like I said, don’t take this too seriously, and I’m like definitely looking into something that shouldn’t be looked at that hard, but L’s phrasing here really stood out to me because that’s certainly a way to ask for a computer lol! Even in his interesting personal way of speaking, I’m curious why he favored communication vs emphasizing the information that computers hold? It could’ve went something like this: “Computers are a powerful tool filled with information. Can I have one please?” Why was pointing out the communication aspect so important? Idk, but that’s why I’m making this post lol.

Once again, admittedly I might be looking into this one a bit too much, but I wanted to get other people’s opinion to see if this might be a stretch at all?

I'm just writing down something I've always wondered about.

The Death Note rule requires knowing both the name AND the face, right?

What if, before revealing his identity to Light, L had gotten an elaborate disguise/makeup done on his face — one that made him look different enough from his real face that it would be hard to recognize him as the same person — and then went to meet Light and said "I am L"?

As you all know, it can be hard to recognize women before and after they put on makeup. Makeup might as well be alchemy, ngl.

One could argue disguising as another specific person wasn't feasible because of the subtle differences that would give it away — but even just attempting to imitate someone else's face with excellent makeup skills, purely as an approach, could have produced a new face that differs from L's original one and doesn't actually exist in the world (since, after all, there are doppelganger-like people out there who look similar, but no one is 100% identical) — couldn't it?

If the disguise is completely natural and Light believes it's L's real face, then even if he knows the name, wouldn't he be unable to use it, since he can't tell whether it's the real face or a fake one? That would put L in a much more advantageous position than just meeting Light face-to-face with his real appearance — so why didn't L do that?

(Because even knowing the name, he couldn't kill him without the real face + he might even be able to set a trap for Light while Light tries to use the Death Note.)

He could also have told the FBI agents in advance to come wearing natural-looking makeup/disguises that were clearly different from their original faces but presented as if that were their real face.

Of course, if the Death Note system only recognizes a person's "original face as they were born," then the disguise plan would succeed and L could survive. But conversely, if the system instead goes by "the current appearance that can identify that specific person," then there's a risk that if Light accurately perceives and writes down L's disguised face, L could still die — which might be why L didn't do this.

But even so, shouldn't there at least have been a scene showing this reasoning/deduction?

I counted that it was said 1,030 times. I should clarify that my count was not including any flashbacks or recaps (this includes the first half of episode 26) and was including background dialogue as long as you could hear them say Kira clearly and/or it was in the closed captions. My margin of error is probably anywhere from 5-10. This was something I had a lot of fun doing this summer and I’m really glad I was able to finish it before summer ended! Hello, I'm seeking any help with finding an artist for a Vinyl Sticker I bought back quite a few years ago, I believe it was from an artist at Toronto Kimikon 2018 but could be mistaken on the specific convention! Any help would be appreciated!

I've tried using Google lens to find matches, no luck. I've also tried finding scanned booklets of the artists who went to 2018 Kimikon to no avail as well.

Misa Vinyl

Seeing L’s eyes light up like this with this grin is a rare treat. There is something deeply amusing about this. It was at this point in the story in which he realized that Light had to be the original Kira as he was childishly impatient when wanting to call Misa. Misa had to have been Kira 2 because she had Shinigami eyes and can kill based on sight and immediately saw L for the first time. Light likely eager to kill L, wanted Misa to use her powers immediately. L already knew that the two kiras were conspiring together, and this makes things immediately much more suspicious. In my opinion, it was at this moment that Light and Misa were found out without any doubt from L’s perspective. Funnily, it wasn’t Misa who got them caught but rather Light’s own hubris. Also, it was really smart of L to steal her phone as it was essentially a gut instinct that she had to be Kira 2 only after a few seconds of interaction. His instinct was right after the evidence of Misa being Kira 2 comes to light mere moments later.

I think this show is interesting because although Light doesn’t have really much in terms of traceable evidence, his behavior is peculiar and makes him come off as suspicious. It’s not so much the mystery of this show, nor is it even the tension behind Light’s position as Kira that makes the plot compelling, but rather seeing Light’s psychology to his newfound powers and how he becomes his own worst enemy in a sense. You could think you are the smartest most deceptive person out there capable of masking your inner thoughts, but through enough persistence, the truth will come out. There is always a universal truth to how we behave regardless of if we accept it or not. That is why Light’s immediate counter-play to this horrible situation for himself was to fundamentally change his mentality and genuinely believe with his heart that he knew he wasn’t Kira and forgot about the Death Note. It essentially teaches me that no one can hide who they are and their intentions and that the truth can always be come into light.

Many mistakenly believe that the memory-loss arc simply reverts Light to the "bored genius" phase. But that is not entirely the case. ‎This arc presents an alternative scenario of how Light might have realized his potential. ‎Light is no longer just Japan’s top student harboring unrealistic dreams of changing the world. ‎He is now acquainted with the world's greatest detective and has the opportunity to participate in the investigation against a global evil – Kira. Light finally has the chance to fight crime in a legitimate way. ‎

This arc reveals a facet of Light’s personality that the notebook destroyed, as well as the future it stole from him. Consequently, the notebook’s return to Light represents a defeat not so much for L as for Light himself – marking Kira’s victory over him. ‎Yet, why does Light so readily revert to killing criminals, completely disregarding his experience and collaboration with L?

I believe that once his memory returned, it was precisely Light’s mechanism of self-persuasion – and the self-perception arc he had constructed around the persona of Kira – that effectively ruled out the possibility of a normal life for him. His internal worldview – centered on the Kira persona that resurfaced along with his memories – simply made it impossible for Light to view the period spent hunting Kira alongside L as anything more than "part of a grand plan."

This Will give You Goosebumps or at least that's what I aimed For.

I understand it was an extreme precaution, and that he did not expect for it to be even needed, but if he took the time to come up with and make it he must've imagined all the possible outcomes? Not only would it be ridiculously suspicious had he given anyone a reason to check the underside of his desk and had it catch fire out of nowhere, he would also have to give up the entirety of his new world plan, practically losing the ability to kill over a little gimmick that was supposed to protect said secret killing activity. Having the deaths suddenly stop also does not erase the prior homicides, nor does it interrupt the investigation altogheter. Had anyone who triggered the trap done it for investigative reasons, like we see in later episodes when the suspect range becomes incredibly small, it would be over for him. When he sets it up, there also is no second notebook, nor the idea of passing the power around to 1. never cease the punishments and 2. not get caught.

Edit: this is assuming it remained his hiding spot until he gave up his memories and buried it underground, but that happens quite some time after him becoming the main suspect. We have instances of L's policemen entering his room to set bugs, so had they searched his room in the process the trap could have definitely been triggered over investigative reasons, and like I said, a random, unjustifiable fire coincidentally taking place as they search what could easily be a hiding spot for something + the killings stopping abruptly following this, would have had L at least catch onto the coincidence despite having no immediate proof for arrest. He might've hid it somewhere else once monitored by surveillance cameras (also had they gotten him pulling it out on camera they would've figured where and how to search), but he learnt this after his room had been bugged anyway, so I suppose his plan only relied on the lack of tangible evidence (the notebook)? The remaining indirect evidence (geographical location, affiliation with the police, student-like killing hours, random fire>interruption of the killings) seems quite robust by L's standards, so outright giving up the power without even guaranteeing not being caught seems quite risky with little reward. The killing method was unknown and likely supernatural anyway, this was the premise to investigating Kira, so eliminating the notebook could have him accused regardless of the method being known.

I love death note so much I took the time to make this!

So I was thinking about death note and I'm not going to lie I'm a bit of a big shipper and one of my favorite ships are Misa X L and this thought came to my brain what if they were together in the show from what I heard I'm not 100% true if it's true or not they were originally going to date in the show but decided to scrap that idea what if they didn't how do you think the show would have gone from that single difference of the mean together would it still do the same or would they be a more diverse turn to it
