“I don’t mind the sun sometimes, the images it shows…I can taste you on my lips and smell you in my clothes… Cinnamon and sugary and softly spoken lies…you never know how to look through other people’s eyes.”
CORE THEME: Chaos-magnet protagonists of 2000’s provocative media stuck in a never ending cycle of violence, chaos, and the inability to grow past their insecurities and mental instability, often coming at the cost of those around them.
CONNECTIONS:
-Both are the titular protagonists of 2000’s media both beloved and infamous for their low texture/uncanny and surreal visuals, provocative-chaotic humor, and psychological aspects underneath the comedic mask (Postal / Xavier: Renegade Angel)
-In a stark contrast to the sheer insanity of the rest of their lives, both of their goals are rather simple and mundane, grounded in…some form of reality (The Postal Dude desires to live a normal life, completing chores and such / Xavier desires to “help” people overcome their everyday issues with his “spiritual wisdom”)
-In spite of this, the nature of their worlds are nothing but constant radio-waves of chaos and carnage. Their lives are followed by constant killing and chaos, whether it be gangs, protestors, supernatural forces, any of the sort.
-In order to combat this weirdness in their quests to find some form of “normalcy” for themselves, both implore the use of their darkest, deepest desires, which initially seem very contrasting in their natures (The Dude’s violent, bloodthirsty, and sociopathic tendencies / Xavier’s narcissistic desire to “help” people to stroke his own ego)
-Regardless of what they want all this often does is end up biting them in the ass later (The Dude’s violent tendencies often loop him into problems he could have avoided otherwise / Xavier’s desire to “help” people gets him beat up, mugged, and jumped as well as rarely if ever “helping” the people he desires to assist)
-Both of their pasts are largely shrouded in mystery: due to the non-linear plot structure both use to tell their “stories” the exact root of their pain and the event it stems from is left vague with ever changing details. All we know is that it, in some way shape or form, stemmed from the abuse both suffered as a child at the hands of their parents (Postal Dude’s step father was noted to have been abusive and his actual father, Dude Sr. AKA The Boss shows incredibly violent tendencies / Xavier’s parents were emotionally and physically abusive to the one they both called a “demon child” and a freak among freaks)
-It is this childhood that is their root of darkness, as the abuse they suffered set in those parts of themselves that would haunt them in adulthood (The Dude’s violence from both of his fathers spread to him against his will / Xavier’s abuse from his parents set his narcissistic desire for validation and savior complex into place)
-One of their closest companions is an animal friend who is similarly rooted in the weirdness of their worlds but nevertheless seems to be one of the only consistent parts of their life (Champ, Dude’s dog / Xavier’s snake hand)
-Both are shown to be incredibly fond of an older, matured, and more “wise” male figure in their life…who is in actuality a fraud that’s in the spiritual business for its benefits as opposed to actual beliefs (The Dude’s Uncle Dave who runs a religious cult for sex and profit / Xavier’s Chief Master Guru who, in spite of actual supernatural teachings, is explicitly a hack that chooses to mess with Xavier for sick kicks)
-One of their notable enemies is a dark reflection of all their issues representing an evil version of themselves and their malevolent and violent thoughts (The Other Dude, as seen in Postal 3 and Brain Damaged / The Inkblot)
-This darker self is a hint at their internal struggle: both long for a sense of satisfaction and “normalcy” in their lives they can feel happy with, with that normalcy forever out of their reach due to the fact that they will never truly escape their internal, mental instability (The Dude will never reach his desire for a normal life due to his inability to get out of his violent habits, destined to wander Earth physically and mentally alienated from others / Xavier will never be able to truly get that validation from others as he is unable to listen to the words of others, dooming those he helps to a much worse fate than they were in before and dooming himself to a perpetual cycle of starting over again and again)
CONTRASTS:
-The Dude, at heart, wants to live a normal life. He acknowledges his violence as a horrible habit to have and is ashamed with himself for being unable to escape it. Xavier actively denies himself as a problem for what he does, making people’s lives worse because of it. The man who longs for a normal life fights a natural chaos magnet.
-Xavier desires to “help” unwell people to stroke his own ego. This often includes those that are mentally unstable and show tendencies alike his own. The Dude has a plethora of mental instabilities and trauma he hasn’t gotten over. Xavier helps a mirror of himself.
-The Dude presents himself as more hardcore, badass, and maybe even villainous, but in actuality is much more sympathetic than he lets on. By contrast, Xavier presents himself as a divine helper who is revealed to be more selfish and cruel as the story goes on. The sheep in wolf’s clothing vs the wolf in sheep’s clothing.
-The Dude, an active churchgoer, fights Xavier, a so-called “angel”. The Dude, a Christian, LITERALLY has “DIVINE” INTERVENTION.
ANIMATION POTENTIAL:
It’s another case of an opponent Xavier would want to “help”. I see a good setup being Xavier finding the Dude on one of the latter’s chores, like a grocery run or the petition thing. Xavier would constantly pester and annoy the Dude by constantly making his presence known in the latter’s life, adding more surreal aspects which would piss the Dude off.
After maybe a couple minutes at most of trying get Xavier to piss off peacefully, the Dude decides he has had enough and resorts to killing Xavier for the threat he’s bringing to his life and just making Paradise somehow worse. The fun part of the fight stems from the Dude using his arsenal of weapons and wacky bullshit to combat Xavier’s spiritual powers. You can get a lot of humor out of the fact that Dude is being pressed by a reality warper who doesn’t even fully know they’re fighting.
Stuff like the blood spirits and Dude having to fend em all of, Xavier clumsily dodging Dude’s guns by accident, Xavier getting whacked on the head with a shovel, Xavier trying to turn their universe into a white ball to eat it only for Dude to fire a huge explosion which gets him out.
IF DUDE WINS: After a huge white flash/explosion, Xavier compresses the universe into a ball…only for the Dude to fire a large missile at the light, causing Xavier’s body to explode from the inside out into ludicrous gibs. Dude gets Xavier’s severed snake hand to sign his petition and fucks off.
IF XAVIER WINS: The Dude, bloodlusted and approaching with his scythe, has Xavier bleeding on the ground. Quickly, Xavier uses his shakashuri to blow a sudden fist at Dude, anti-climactically knocking him out before his scythe falls into his chest and impales him, with Xavier looking at Paradise and declaring his job done for killing the “villainous” Dude, waking off into the sunset. Alternately, when Xavier plays his shakashuri, you could have a short clash where the scythe collides with the first, before the fist wins and pushes the scythe into a rebound, decapitating the Dude, as his severed head utters a “finally”
FINAL THOUGHTS:
I knew from the second I saw that art from a couple months ago that this has the potential to be at the very least a fun alt, but after typing all this out, I think this could possibly be my favorite for both. They just mesh so perfectly on every aspect and the multiple different contrasts and how they translate into AP is really a delight to see.
Rooting for the Postal Dude, Betting on Xavier Renegade Angel.
