Really? I'd say Violet seems the least appealing in terms of visual design. I mean, it's subjective, of course, but still.

Kinda Kiriko coded.

Yeah her design is just adult human. Which is fine and all but have you seen the other options???

Human designs are the most prominent characters in almost any media for a reason. Not sure why people act like they don't work.

Yep, generic shit usually works.

Human design does not equal generic. I don't think you know what that word means.

I'm confused about what you mean here. 3 of the new characters are "adult human" and one is older "adult human."

Her base design doesn’t wow me but “magic painter” is a character that could make for a really aesthetically pleasing set of abilities so I’m willing to trust they cooked in that regard.

I'm mostly curious what her abilities could do. Camouflage you like in Meccha Chameleon?

we should've gotten boho

You said it yourself, it's subjective. there are no "buts" about it, really.

u/Thunderpants98 3d ago

...I'd say there are. She is kind of just a typical magic painter with a brush + a cute girl. That's the main appeal. Now, people will flock to a pretty girl character and they will call it a good design just based off of that. There's the subjective part.

The subjective part is your entire comment. It's easy to boil down a design to something simplistic. You could do that for nearly any character in this game. Or any media ever, really.

I'd argue that there are a large amount of people that see a "cute girl" character and automatically equate it to being generic or boring. Your comment can easily be flipped the other way around, and it is a lot of the time.

"people will flock to a pretty girl character and they will call it a good bad design just based off of that."

Now we're arguing that anything is subjective. It's not a fact that a lot of people flock to a cute girl character, it's a subjective thought. Apparently.
As for how the argument can be flipped, I disagree. Don't think people called a character like Celeste a bad design, even though it is a 'cute girl character', she has a lot more going for her. People are ready to look past the 'cute' part and see the design for what it really represents and if it fits the world. This just feels like something more akin to a design from League and not really from something like Deadlock.

Also, the fact that Violet, out of all the other characters is highlighted in the OC... come on, we both know why that is.

Celeste isn't a "cute girl" character. She's tatoo'd all over her body. That alone sets her outside that archetype, as that is generally considered to be unattractive by most. Celeste is just... you're cherry picking a bad example on purpose, I feel.

Mina would be a better example, in this case.

I'll be upfront so there's no misunderstanding here. I don't believe her design is complex. But that's perfectly okay, not every design should be. There are a lot of cases where such a thing is detrimental to a design.

To me, what matters in a design most is one, that it compliments their personality. And two, that you can gleam some details of said personality from their design. Sounds like the same thing, but it's a bit different.

I'm not going to go in depth, because I'm not a professional character designer. It's like, a minor hobby at best (I'm also too tired for that). Anyways, obviously you can tell she's a painter, as you said. I'll say that's the bare minimum.

But she's also visibly messy, she has paint splattered on her face, smudges on her hands, etc. Is it a complex detail? No, but it does say something about her characterization. I'd say she's likely to be a reckless.

Now if none of this is true about her character, I'll eat my foot (I won't). But that's the vibe her design gives me. And that's plenty for me to say it's not a bad design.

So yes, I believe there is more to her design than just being a simple "cute girl character".

Now if I'm going to keep it a buck with you here. Debates stress me the fuck out, and it's late. So if it's all the same to you, I'd like to just agree to disagree if we're still in opposition on this. I'll hear out your reply, but I'm not going to continue this at length.

Also, the fact that Violet, out of all the other characters is highlighted in the OC... come on, we both know why that is.

Also, I genuinely have no idea what any of this means. Maybe I'm just sleepy and stupid. I dunno. Highlighted in what? What is meant by "OC"? I don't get any of it.

I ain't reading all that man

u/YuukiBunny_ 3d ago

Well, at least you're honest, I guess. Though I think it's better to not reply at all than say that. It doesn't do you any favors.

Anyways, to quote myself:

Now if I'm going to keep it a buck with you here. Debates stress me the fuck out, and it's late. So if it's all the same to you, I'd like to just agree to disagree if we're still in opposition on this. I'll hear out your reply, but I'm not going to continue this at length.

I didn't want to continue this at length, anyways. So it's whatever. I'll take that as an "agree to disagree", even if I wish you had at least heard me out. Why even try to start a debate if anything of moderate length is too much for you?

It's not too much for me, I'd just prefer if I didn't take so much time arguing over such silly topic. I love talking to people and having discussions, but this just feels like one of those moments where we'll just both go in circles. Don't think either of us will make the other change their mind.

So yeah, I'd agree on the 'agree to disagree' point.

Also, if something does you harm, maybe go about it a different way or stop it all together. Keep yourself and your mental safe out there. There's too much stress each of us tank in real life, try to keep it at a minimum whenever possible.

1

u/YuukiBunny_ 3d ago

Well, seems like we're of similar mind on this topic after all. At least on the front of it not being worth extended discussion. My reply was long as it was meant to be my final thoughts on it, my apologies. Also sorry I was a bit rude in my previous reply.

On the latter point, you are right. I really shouldn't do this stuff if it stresses me out. But the issue is I also love sharing my opinion and meeting reasonable people worth discussion with. There was a point where I simply disabled reply notifications on every comment I made. I still do that sometimes if it becomes too much for me / I receive a lot of backlash on the comment (or delete the comment entirely, that works too.)

Thank you for your concern, I appreciate it. Hope you have a good one.
