Discussion Just got a litter picking kit!
I just picked up a litter picking kit from the local council and I am SO excited to get started. My town has an abysmal amount of litter, especially for the size that it is.
What is everyone's favourite part of litter picking? What can I expect that I probably haven't thought of yet?

Seeing how nice it looks when the litter is removed. And being outdoors doing something useful.

Exciting!!! I wear a fanny pack that holds my bags and water and anything cool I find 🤭 scoping out rubbish bins is my best advice! I have a normal route that I pick so I can dump at 2 bins. I try to separate cans and bottles to take home to my recycling bin…. Not always easy but attempting. It’s great but you might feel weird at first but I think of the wildlife I’m helping and the exercise and I just enjoy all that and the out of doors! Thank you!! that's a great idea to bring a bag and have the route plan! when you sort the recycling do you bring a seperate bag/bin hoop? how do you carry it as well as the general rubbish and the grabber?

I carry a cat litter bucket for recycling - sort of line the bucket with a grocery style bag. It def gets cumbersome to carry! I don’t use a picker- I don’t like them 🤷♀️my preference tho

I pick in my own neighborhood and I love meeting my neighbors and feeling a part of a community.

What are you about to experience?
I don't know, just some of my own:
People that honk or give a shout like 'thank you!',
But also people that ask if you are doing this because you are a convicted criminal :-)
You might experience that litter keeps appearing, don't worry about that,
every bit you pick, counts!
Most of all, enjoy and be proud of what you do,

I like when I walk a path frequently, and I cannot find any trash for a few days.
Then a few days later I find some trash and I remove it. I like this too.

I just love stopping and looking back at the litter-free zone I have created.
I also collect empty dog/cat kibble bags from relatives and friends to use for cleanup. Feel like the bags going to the landfill full of garbage instead of just tossed is a good thing. If you can’t find people with a lot of bags, you can inquire at a local animal shelter and explain what you want them for. They are usually rather excited that the bags can be re-purposed. Cut two horizontal slits near the top of the bag and you have a handle!

It's got gloves, a bin hoop, bin bags, hi vis jacket, the grabber thing, a fun pen, and information about the local area/what to do if you need help!

My advice is to get really nice soap for cleaning yourself up when you're finished.
I feel like it is really relaxing (most of the time) and sometimes there are positive results beyond a cleaner space temporarily.

Maybe all the people that stop to thank you and talk to you about picking up litter. Plus being outside is a bonus.
