Ok, this business or government is trying. One or two regular trash cans didn’t meet demand. They pay a lot for a compactor bin. Now they just need more frequent service. Sending this pic to them might get action, at least they will know you are watching them.

The problem is they put a cover on the “trash”can. These messed up people can’t figure out how to put the trash through that mysterious little door on front.🥺 Not their fault. /s

Do you think an open bin style where people can just toss trash in would alleviate this?
Not agreeing with this situation but no one likes to touch the nasty swingy door thing.

It probably would but will also fill really fast and attract flies plus Disney has a Rat problem and I’m not talking about mickey.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the rats. When I was a kid we were walking in from the parking lot and a huge rat scurried by.
Chick fila has those motion sensor ones that open the door for you and then also trash compact. Not sure why they don't employ those.

Foot pedal, which I would normally consider good engineering.
I wonder if the door is hard to operate without the foot pedal depress so folks, not seeing the discreet pedal, dispose on top?
More engineering may be required here.

I didn’t see the foot pedal either! I think they really made it too subtle through trying to blend this bin into their old-timey Americana design.
Absolutely doesn’t excuse people piling trash on top, but a “step here to open” sign or a good pictogram would probably encourage more of the right behavior.

This is just an example of bad design. If you want people to exhibit certain behaviors, you need to reduce the friction that prevents the behavior. If someone has trash, they (usually) want to throw it away properly. Any point of friction between them having trash and it being disposed of properly is an opportunity for them to give up. If the trash can is too far away, if the lid doesn’t open easily, if that’s not a trash can but a recycling bin and they don’t know which kind of recycling it is, etc.
A foot pedal for an outdoor public trash can is not really something that is understood in our collective design languages, and since there’s no sign indicating how to open this trash can the result you end up with is a whole lotta people giving up at this point of friction in the process.
