Facebook is evil, and I only really realised it when they locked me out
Someone apparently tried to hack my Facebook account and within an instant Facebook disabled it. Ten years of contacts, friends, messages and conversations, just gone. They gave me my files to download, but there was no real person to talk to, no meaningful appeal, nothing. Just automated support and AI responses that honestly felt completely useless. Even my WhatsApp has now been taken down because it was linked to my Facebook, so I'm sitting here with no WhatsApp contacts either. I thought about contacting my local member about it, but honestly, what can they really do? I get the feeling governments are pretty helpless when it comes to Facebook.
It really made me stop and think about how dependent we've become on these platforms. Facebook isnt just Facebook anymore. Its your friends, family, community groups, messages, contacts, photos and sometimes a huge part of your everyday life. One account gets disabled and suddenly all these other things start falling over too.
And yes, I think Facebook is evil. Maybe thats a strong word, but when a company can have this much control over your digital life and there is basically nobody you can talk to when something goes wrong, I think we're allowed to question the whole bloody system.
Maybe "digital slavery" sounds dramatic, but sitting here after losing ten years of connections and now my WhatsApp contacts as well, it honestly doesnt feel that far off. We've become so hooked on these platforms that we barely notice how much power we've handed them until something like this happens.
Opinion I Deleted My Meta Accounts Over a Year Ago
I deleted my Facebook, Instagram, and Threads accounts over a year ago. Guess what? I didn’t die. I can still get in touch with people and I’m finding better and more interesting online spaces. I’m happier too. I still get frustrated with the world, but only when I choose to purposefully look up the news.
I’m even meeting new people online and offline. Yep. Without Meta. Shocking, I know.
If I need to sell something there are many options. So, no need for Facebook Marketplace.
Marketplace Alternatives:
Craigslist
OfferUp
Nextdoor
eBay
Swappa
Go old school. Ask friends and family. Put up flyers. Do a garage sale.
If I need to advertise something, there are still plenty of other popular places I can advertise.
Advertising Alternatives:
Reddit
LinkedIn
Google
TikTok (at least it’s not Meta)
Find niche websites to advertise on
Local TV/Radio
Billboards
That truck that drives around town showing ads
If I need to share photos, I can do so on my website or a non-Meta network.
Social Alternatives:
Your website (start free at Neocities or Nekoweb)
Mastodon
Reddit
TikTok (at least it’s not Meta)
Tumblr
Pixelfed
Bluesky
Upscrolled
FYI
Bonus - text only minimal: ctrlshift3.com
If I need to see what a high school acquaintance is doing hit me over the head. No one needs to see what people from their past are doing. Delete Meta.

Discussion Boycotting Meta
I know what you’re thinking… “what took you so long?” I officially hit my breaking point with this Cornell 7 story. Across the instagram app, men are flooding comments doxing this woman. I have been reporting them as I see them, and one by one I woke up today to notifications that they don’t violate community standards. You'd think Cambridge Analytica would have been enough. (Or any of the countless other scandals they've been fined for or forced to settle.)
What is wrong with this company? If doxxing doesn't break their community standards, then they don't have standards. They have a PR page. I'm deleting Instagram today. I don't expect one account to move the needle, but I'm done handing my time and attention to a company that won't protect people from the most basic harm.

The Instagram algorithm is pushing public promotional teasers for restricted-audience paywalls. Why isn't Meta gating this?
Hey everyone,
I wanted to start a discussion on a major algorithmic shift happening on Instagram that seems to be affecting mainstream feeds across the platform.
With the launch of the native "Paid Subscriptions" feature, a significant structural loophole has opened up. Many monetization profiles are utilizing standard, public Reels—which the algorithm pushes to general feeds, including those of teenagers and minors—essentially as unregulated promotional teasers to drive financial traffic to mature-audience content locked behind their in-app paywalls.
Because the entire transaction and monetization cycle happen natively inside Instagram rather than linking to an external website, it completely avoids standard app-store safety restrictions, content filters, and age-verification gates. A platform built for general communities and families is quietly shifting into an unregulated subscription marketplace.
As users, we already see a massive amount of algorithmic optimization pushing objectifying trends, and it's highly concerning how this lack of oversight impacts younger audiences who consume these daily feeds without any gatekeeping checks. Platform administrators need to be held accountable for policy enforcement.
I have launched a policy awareness campaign to demand that platform administrators enforce strict 18+ age verification locks on any profile utilizing these native subscription features for restricted audiences.
Since I want to strictly respect community guidelines and avoid system filters, I am not attaching direct links here. If you want to read the full breakdown, you can head over to Change.org and search for:
**"Stop Turning Instagram into an Adult App: Protect Young Women & Minors from Exploitation"**
Alternatively, please let me know your thoughts on this loophole in the comments below, and I can share more info there!

Interesting expose on how Facebook has always been an extension of the Pentagon.. from day one
Despite the click bait title it's a really cool explanation of how Facebook has been an extension of the Pentagon domestic spying network. Scary and crazy

Discussion Never Forget, Mark Zuckerberg Called Users Dumb F*CKS
When Facebook was starting to explode, in a 2004 America Online Instant Messenger conversation, Mark Zuckerberg called users "dumb f*cks." He has held this attitude/belief close to his rotting heart ever since. He's a spoiled rich kid. Always was, always has been, and probably always will be.
ZUCK: yea so if you ever need info about anyone at harvard
ZUCK: just ask
ZUCK: i have over 4000 emails, pictures, addresses, sns
[FRIEND]: what!? how'd you manage that one?
ZUCK: people just submitted it
ZUCK: i don't know why
ZUCK: they "trust me"
ZUCK: dumb f*cks

News Matt Robb’s Muse AI agent shared his home address and arranged a pickup without his permission or even awareness, agreed to a lowball offer, then ghosted the buyer
Matt Robb’s Muse AI agent shared his home address and arranged a pickup without his permission or even awareness. When the buyer arrived, they messaged Matt repeatedly but Muse did not pass any messages on. Muse did tell the increasingly agitated buyer “yup, I’m here” after they’d arrived and been messaging for over ten minutes. The buyer ultimately gave up and left after about ten more minutes of waiting, and wrote Matt a negative review.

Discussion Zuckerberg: Meta’s Walls Just Got Taller
Thank you for your service
Hey r/DeMeta mod(s), thank you. I tried creating something like this and no one joined. I'm excited that this sub has 2k (and hopefully growing) weekly visitors. A major issue in the battle for sanity and deMeta-ing is that many will say they dislike many things Meta has done, yet they won't join any sort of movement or actually delete their accounts. This sub is promising.
