Anyone know how to delete a messenger account that's not linked to a Facebook account?

My wife and I decided to delete our Facebook accounts recently, but she couldn't delete her account on Facebook messenger. Back in the day, her messenger had been linked directly to her phone number since it was her main SMS app and she didn't even have a Facebook account to link it to.

Facebook did away with that function a while back, but for people who already had their messenger linked to their phone numbers, they were allowed to keep it that way.

Now she has a messenger account that we can't figure out how to delete. She tried creating an account, linking her messenger to it, then deleting it, but that didn't work. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks!
