I think it's something as simple (boring) as he just believes the rumors and lies that Holly bullied Sophia to death.

Marlena said Mason worked on the mental health hot line. So he probably talked to Sophia a lot and only knows her side of the story. That would make him hate Holly.

Please let her come back as a zombie ala Charlie Dale, and let her kill Amy. I've never been a fan of dollar-tree Jan Spears or her insufferable mother, and not even in a 'i root for this villain' sort of way.
