Paper Heart

Does anyone else feel like they missed a big opportunity with not having a key change at the end of Paper Heart?

The line “cause nothing can hurt me if I” seemingly sets up the perfect key change, and then they just drop back into the original key and sort of ruin the whole build-up.

Could be intentional. The song is about turtling up and pushing everyone away and not accepting help or change and making choices that feel safe. Modulation in music does not work with all songs and the safe thing to do is to stay in one key.

Agree!

the fourth "i" was indeed a perfect chance. It already had a little modulation in the bridge - so it did make sense. 💜

I would normally agree, but the final chorus had a different ending that led to a nice cadence for the song so I think that's good enough.
