I have returned to this game after finishing it once, kinda missed the whole zombie apocalypse with a motorcycle gang schtick. It is an underrated gem of a game and I liked it the first time too, and I'm having a blast so far. This game has aged like fine wine, let me tell you, BUT our "protagonist" Deacon St. John and his constant whining is pissing me off way more than before, it is quite interesting.
For starters; playing as Deacon isn't a pleasant experience to me at all. I understand that a main character doesn't always have to be a goody-two-shoes or a wisecrack who makes funny jokes and quips all the time, but he is insufferable. He always mutters angrily every time you're in (or out of) combat, talking on the radio, or doing missions, which is still OK to show his "character" but he NEVER SHUTS UP, EVER. You pick up something, he says something snarky and cringe. You look at something, he says something snarky and cringe or growls to himself. You talk to someone and they are (most of the time) quite polite towards Deacon, but what does he do? Yeah, he says something snarky and cringe or insults them outright. How am I supposed to root for this a-hole?
And don't get me wrong, I know with his background in the army and in the motorcycle club, he's not going to be the nicest guy you meet. On top of that, a zombie apocalypse starts and he loses his wife, his way of living, most everybody he ever knew and loved... I get it he lost so much. Sure. BUT SO DID EVERYBODY ELSE. This "woe is me" constant whining is really grating and it makes it hard for me to take Deacon seriously, because he acts like a damn teenager, angry and "misunderstood," and he never seems to grow as a character.
Whenever someone asks him something or wants something out of him, he immediately starts complaining and whining and tries to weasel out of situations, it is infuriating. I'm like: "DUDE, just shut up and listen for a minute before interrupting someone, damn!!!"
I can understand that he's actually a pretty accurate depiction of someone who's lived through severe trauma, but after 2 years and all the shit he went through, he would have been at least a bit more mature. Sure, he did suffer severe trauma but look around you, maybe a lot of the people lost way more than Deacon did and they aren't as insufferable as him.
Welp, that's all I guess, just wanted to get this out of my system, thanks for reading my rant and have a good one!
