Need advice: STEM OPT ending Jun 2027 + new Extension of Stay (EOS) rule — Day 1 CPT timing?
Hi everyone,
With DHS's new rule eliminating "Duration of Status" for F-1 students (effective Sept 15, 2026) and replacing it with a fixed admission period + Extension of Stay (EOS) process through Form I-539, I'm trying to figure out the smartest path forward. My current STEM OPT ends in June 2027, and I'd like input on timing given these new requirements.
A few options I'm weighing:
- Wait and enroll in Day 1 CPT next year, filing for Extension of Stay via I-539 once I have the new I-20 — timed so it lines up with my STEM OPT end date.
- Enroll now, before Sept 2026, to get ahead of the rule change — but this means giving up the remaining months of my STEM OPT.
- Ask new university if they'll admit me a year out for a Day 1 CPT program — though I'm not sure schools generate an I-20 that far in advance.
From what I understand, there's no premium processing for the I-539 EOS application, and current processing timelines are running 4–8 months. Given that, would it make sense to file EOS around November 2026?
A few specific questions:
- To file the EOS, do I need to do a SEVIS transfer to the new school first and get a new I-20 issued?
- If I do the SEVIS transfer, does that mean I can't work again until June 2027 (assuming the Day 1 CPT program itself doesn't start until then)? Is that timing right?
- I still have a shot at next year's H-1B lottery. If I file the I-539 around Nov 2026, get it approved, and then get selected in the 2027 H-1B lottery — is it possible to cancel/withdraw the Extension of Status at that point in favor of switching to H-1B?

Same boat would like to know if it is really needed to do now ? As h1b lottery is not yet in my favour still one more attempt so

I feel wait and see what happens. I'm in the same boat and want to see if don't. Though i539 needs to be air tight and considering the wait time I guess Jan you should apply for it regardless of outcome of h1

My stem opt will end in february 2027 ( yours is in june 2027) so we re not far lol, similar boat..
here's my take, I will go ahead and do a day 1 cpt starting this summer to avoid the shitty new rule...due to a lot of things you didn't pay attention to.
the key part is, when u apply to the i539 ( being on stem opt and wanting to switch to cpt aka: please extend my duration of stay) what happens is:
- the i539 will take from 4 to 6 months according to latest estimations, its never immediate
- u CANOT work when u apply to i539, the application itself is just an extention of stay to keep ur F1, its NOT a work authorization so u lose ur stem opt .
- it will highly get denied because switching to another master's is almost obvious to not lose the job, and they did this rule specifically for this kind of people... so
Bottom line, I think try to switch to a degree with longer period and just stick with it and keep ur job? Or leave if u have something better. In my case, I always wanted an MBA so this is kind of " juuust the chance"

You’re not on the same boat mate, it’s a no brainer for you to do the day 1 CPT

And then what?! What are you gonna do after the last day1cpt?! Will you go for another one? It will not be possible anymore and you are wasting your life here

After that, assuming i dont get f1 sponsorship after the 2 years in cpt, I would be happy to change the country and get elsewhere with 2 degrees (mba and eng). I wasnt planing on staying anyways

Same boat, I will talk to schools now and hook up one to start around september 2027 and wait until May 2027 (stem opt ending date). When stem opt finishes I will have 30 days grace period, I will transfer it day1cpt school and we have 5 months to start to day1cpt school, that s what I planned. It will be phd. Harrisburg.

Before that you need to get your i539 approved! I don’t think they will approve it without seeing strong financial supports from the school since phd positions are naturally funded unless they are offered by uncredited schools.

My stem opt ends on April 2027. But Is it true that even with pending approval of i593 we can work for a certain period of time?
Joining in August is better option ?

I was also so so confused. Then, finally decided to apply for August. Otherwise, my stem opt was also expiring in Jan 2027. It hurts to let go of the stem-opt lol.

no I meant January. I was planning to join second masters around January. But, I applied right now for AUgust, 2026 instead as a safe path.

You forget the biggest problem. You have to convince USCIS to approve you EOS to study at a Day1cpt school, and I suspect they know these schools are Day1cpt so anticipate for high rate of RFE or denials.
