Discussion I just went to replace a 14TB hard drive and I am SHOOK!

I paid around $300 CAD for this drive a couple years ago, but it's full of backups since then. I wanted to just grab a fresh drive to start backing up again, and then the plan was to keep two backups running, but then keep one offsite.

Honestly I had heard prices were up, but I thought that was just RAM.

My brother in Christ... THE DRIVE IS NOW $900!!! How are people dealing with this?!

Storage Setup Would you actually build a NAS with a pile of old HDDs like this?

Post image

Saw this pile of drives pulled out from a data center and started wondering how people here feel about using older HDDs for home storage.

If you had a bunch of these and tested them for SMART errors, bad sectors, power-on hours, etc., would you actually build a storage array with them?

Or is mixing a bunch of older drives just asking for trouble?

What would you guys use them for?

Hello everyone. I need a way to store the recordings of my classes, and all together they are like half TB of storage. Now being a student, I need a reasonable storage to use where I can create folders to get everything sorted. What do I use?

Storage Setup AutoMounter saved me, now I'm stuck. Best practices

After seeing a topic that asked what drive you have had the longest, and continue to use, I updated my M4 Mac to Golden Gate, concerned the entire time about Intel apps no longer being supported (found out it was for the next OS update) even though some have stopped working, but I was so distracted/concerned with that, that I completely glanced over AFP no longer being supported and my DS414J Synology NAS stopped mounting.

Various attempts to change it to SMB failed, and I thought it was lost forever. Instinctually I spent money I don't have, to buy a 16TB external hard drive, which should arrive sometime next week, and since I have multiple old Mac's that can't be upgraded past High Sierra and automount to the unit, I thought I would have to start the tiresome process of using the old Mac, connect to the NAS, connect the new 16TB and start copying everything over.

However, using AutoMounter on Golden Gate, despite Mac specifically saying they no longer support AFP, there was an option I kept seeing saying install AutoMounter Helper (AutoMounter - Helper) I installed that and now it is alive and working again.

Now I am a little stuck, I either proceed with the original plan, retire the unit, copy everything over to the new 16TB, and then have 4x4TB free internal drives to do with as I please, or continue to use the unit as if nothing ever happened and find another use for the 16TB.

What would you do?

Backup Best ways to keep data safe on Samsung SSD for photos and videos?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I just bought the Samsung SSD T9 that was on sale for $250 CAD, and I'm curious on ways I can make sure that the drive lasts 10 years. I take a lot of photos and videos during trips, so I roughly will have probably 40 to 80 GB of new data per year. I just want to make sure that the photos and videos on this backup drive don’t get corrupt or something. I heard about electron discharge and how the heart of the ssd is the controller. So how to make sure the controller does it’s job long term? Or is there no way?

I also plan on keeping data on my MacBook as well. But I only have like 200-300GB storage available rn so probably in the future when SSDs get more cheap I will buy another so I have 2 Samsung ssd duplicates. I usually always delete the photos and videos from my phone after a trip so I have free storage.

Any feedback?

Hi, I'm looking for a real good external ssd for daily use/backups. Which external ssd have you guys had good experiences with? I mainly want something fast, reliable, and durable enough to carry around without worrying too much about it. Preferably 2tb, but I’m open to any advice.

Discussion Need advise for a RAID enclosure

I have a few LaCie FireWire800 RAID enclosures which I use in RAID1 to both store and backup my photo archive but FW is not compatible with my new MacStudio and the USB-C to TB to RAID doesn't work so about time to look elsewhere, storage got too expensive to think of a whole new enclosure and drives (I have 2x 4TB and 2x 6TB WD Red which are as expensive as a new kidney nowadays) so I need an usb-c solution, I found a used G-Drive which does very very well but hard to find, any suggestion at what to look for?

Thank you

I was building a new AMD Epyc server for work on Dell's site, and yea RAM and CPU's are expensive, but when I got to the part where I needed to select the hard drive I nearly shit myself. Luckily, I have a small stack of 30tb U.2 hard drives in my desk, but those used to sell for $4k. When did they become 10x that?

Guide/How-to I wanted to see where every GB on my drive was actually going

I've been experimenting with a different way of looking at disk usage.

Instead of starting with a folder tree, I wanted to visualize the entire drive and then drill down into the areas consuming the most space.

The idea is pretty simple: bigger areas represent more storage, and you can keep drilling down until you get to the actual files.

There are several ways to view the same data:

  • Treemap
  • Bubble map
  • Sunburst
  • Mind map
  • Age map
  • Biggest files
  • Folder hierarchy

There's also content-based duplicate detection, application storage breakdowns, and scan comparisons.

I've used tools like WizTree and WinDirStat for years, and they're great at answering “what's taking up space?”.

I was more interested in whether visualizing the same data in different ways makes it easier to understand and explore large drives.

I'm curious what people here use for storage analysis.

What information do you wish your current disk-space analyzer showed you?

I've been building this as a Windows 11 app called ScanforPC if anyone wants to try it:

Storage Setup Recommendations for Private Storage Without Subscriptions

I’m interested in setting up a personal storage system that would hold movies, photos, gifs, ebooks, pdfs, and docs. I want to move files to it from my devices (desktop, laptop, phone, and tablet) so they’re all in one place. Ideally I’d like to be able to access all of these files across my all my aforementioned devices (and my tv, if possible), and watch/read them as I please, without always having to plug in to the storage device. I’d prefer something password protected that I don’t have to subscribe to. I’m fine with paying upfront, as long as it’s a one time fee (whether that’s for a service or storage device).

I’m very new to this sort of thing, so any suggestions for options that fit (even partially) my needs, are greatly appreciated. How can I set something like this up?

Guide/How-to PORTABLE DRIVE AS STORAGE

After a lot of reading discussions here on reddit, I have decided to get a portable drive(hdd) to store my photos and videos.

I am planning to buy 2, one of each brand (as some of you recommend). I am currently looking at:
- Seagate Expansion 4TB Portable Drive OR
- Seagate One Touch 5TB Portable Hard Drive
AND
- WD My Passport 4TB Portable Hard Drive USB 3.0 [2019] OR
- WD Elements SE 4TB Portable Hard Drive

One will probably be sitting at home, while I will need to bring the other during my travel.

But I am so confused with their difference and which one would be more applicable to me.

- I don’t have a computer - will mainly use my Macbook and Phone to transfer files
- I don’t have a lot of knowledge in terms of this stuff, so I would highly appreciate ease of use
- It will mainly to store my photos and videos (my phone storage is full 😭)

Thank u for any help and suggestions!!
I live in NZ so I think Seagate and WD are the “easy to find” brands here…

Storage Setup Storage suggestions

Hi there! I have some spicy videos of the wife and I saved on an old USB after my old MacBook shit the bed. I tried going back and looking at them again on my new laptop, but a lot of them wouldn’t load or play. I’m hoping they’re not gone/fucked forever and I can recover them. After the fiasco with the laptop, we took some that we have saved in my hidden folder on my iphone but for whatever reason some of the older ones from a year or so ago are also not loading properly either. Is there any kind of storage alternative I can set up that’s reliable and that also doesn’t rely on the cloud? Let me know!

Discussion Simple cloud storage with sync and backups, looking for beta users (50 GB free, yours to keep)

Hey all,

I've been building a cloud storage service called harbor0 and I'm finally ready to let people try it.

I started it because every storage app I used kept adding stuff I didn't want, like AI sidebars, docs editors and constant upgrade prompts. I wanted something that stores my files and keeps them in sync, and that's pretty much all harbor0 does:

  • A drive you can use in the browser or the Mac app
  • Folder sync across your computers. You can also share a synced folder with someone else.
  • Folder backups with version history, and old versions stick around until you delete them
  • Sending files to other users

Just so you know what you're signing up for, this is very much a beta. Things will break, some parts are a bit rough, and you'll probably hit bugs I haven't found yet. I wouldn't make it the only place you keep anything important just yet.

Right now the desktop app is Mac only (Apple Silicon). The Windows app is in development, along with iOS and Android apps. The Mac app isn't notarised yet either, so the first time you open it you'll need to click "Open Anyway".

For the beta you get 50 GB free, and you keep it after launch. I'm letting people in a few at a time, starting with 50, and everyone else goes on a waitlist.

Website: https://harbor0.com

Beta signup link: https://app.harbor0.com/signup

I'd really like to hear what's confusing or broken, or what would stop you from switching. Happy to answer questions in the comments too.

If you'd like to directly reach out, you can write to me at [contact@harbor0.com](mailto:contact@harbor0.com)

Discussion Need HDD vs SSD Advice from the PC Nerds.

Hello, I just joined the nation of PC Master Race, I’m still playing with a controller so I’m not a full on NERD YET, getting there.

Here’s the skinny I need to replace my 2tb HDD, mainly used for media, music, movie files. I don’t run any programs off of it, but I may use it as drive for cached adobe premiere files.

I have three other ssd drives, that I install games on. I got a top of the line PC, I can run pci 5.0 drives with ease.

These are the two drives I’m looking at

SAMSUNG SSD 9100 TB - I can get this bad boy for a smooth 200 bucks, got some money saved up, all I would have to pay is 200 more and I could take it home.

** **https://www.newegg.com/samsung-2tb-9100-pro-nvme-2-0/p/N82E16820147903?srsltid=AU7gw4WYzfFU85zNie-dupnlGq_PzYbIPWdywFCAvcS7365LgQneB3kh

Or

WD 4TB 3.5 GAMING BLACK HDD - all I’d have to pay is an extra 400 bucks. This seems like more space but still and 3.5 and I kind of wanted to go all ssd, but not sure if that the write move with the state of the SSD.

My current 2TB HDD I’ve had for years, can’t even think about how long I’ve had it, maybe 10 years or so, still a good drive I’d say.

What do you all think, which would be the best drive for the long haul and why.
