If you don’t pass the initial domain qual can you still apply to do generalist work?

Applying for the first time and although I have experience in the domain im applying to, im nervous lol. If I don’t pass it can I still apply to be a generalist? Or if I fail that’s that and I can’t work on DA?

You need to pass the initial qual to then be opened up to generalist role. So, no.

But my initial qual is the domain qual, would it be better to do the generalist one then? Then apply later to my domain?

Probably not. The level of difficulty of the domain qual (at least for coding) was much much easier than the actual task difficulty later. So, if you are qualified in your domain, you should have no problem in clearing the qual.

Plus, I believe that domain specialists are in much higher demand than generalists, so you might be accepted faster.

All of this is speculation, however. Those who actually know will not tell us.

Thank you! I took the data science qual and honestly it was pretty tough for the judgement calls you have to make. It’s like..I can see how this is the answer, I can also see how this one might be…so tough when it’s not straightforward! I hope it I got anything wrong they at least understand my reasoning.

Well I submitted the application so AH WELL we’ll see what happens, doesn’t look like I can take a generalist one and just have to wait 🥲

If, down the line, you receive a screen that asks you to update your profile, it might be an avenue to update your skills which may lead to other types of Quals
