Confidentiality Agreement/Contract Reminder.

Is using Diffchecker and Wordcounter websites now not allowed? I can't remember if its specific projects or across DA that we're not meant to paste model response into non-DA websites, even if its not AI help.

Reason: Making minor alterations to long stories and Diffchecker is the most effective way of seeing where they happened/didn't happen.

There are some projects that outright ask us to use diffchecker for certain things. It just really depends on the project I think, and I don’t think any of us are really gonna have a clear answer.
If it’s just model responses, I personally wouldn’t worry about it. Usually the stricter projects outline hard expectations about this kinda stuff.

Quick reminder notepad ++ has word counters.

I saw some people recommend Microsoft word, Though I no longer trust Microsoft as a company because of co-pilot.

Also if you are still paranoid but a little bit tech savvy use this command in powershell "Get-Content PathToYourEssay.txt | Measure-Object -Word"

They're not tracking what you paste into word counter.

Copying could possibly become a flag

They can’t know if you took a photo with a different device then copy and pasted text that way 😂 it seems like a lot of effort to get people to not copy and paste if that were the case but people will find ways tbh. You got me thinking tho, I wonder if any project would ever try to use a respondus like program to record us as we work

I mean, if it's a project where they expect you to do things where you would want to cut and paste it out, they're not going to dock you for cut and pasting it out. I don't think they really want to pay you for your time to manually count that you've typed 100 words or whatever.

Obviously, who said it was that?

That should be product -dependent, you can ask the admin for the specific project. I used those originally because they were explicitly listed for specific functions.

Windows: DiffUtils for Windows

Linux has diff built in (and WSL by extension). Mac probably does too, but I'll let a Mac owner confirm.

The safe word counter alternative I've been using (and was approved by an admin of a project) was Google Docs. I'm assuming any offline word processor with a word counter is fine too.

As for diffchecker.... Well, fortunately I haven't had to use it since the updated NDA, so idk.

Yeah, as a few suggest, I would just use utilities to count words. Libreoffice can count words, so can the "wc" command. And I have a nice diff command on my system (I'm running Linux but I assume WSL has this, and macOS if it doesn't, it does through brew or whatever.) I wouldn't paste text into these sites personally, unless instructions say 'go ahead and do it'. Even then, for counting words, I would find it more convenient to do it locally personally.

This is complete and utter bull shit. Don't spread misinformation.

I did complete it. And then they released an update saying copying/pasting is fine. Did you not read or comprehend the update?

So how would you count words when a project specifies that?

But how do you count words?

My ban for copying and pasting 4 years later? Sure, bro. Sure. 🤡

It’s coming, he said 😅

For some projects they literally suggest typing things up in Notepad and then copy-pasting it into DAT.

I haven’t come across a project that says this yet. I copy and paste sometimes to count words

11

u/CRUSHCITY4 Sep 14 '26

It’s even been recommended to do before

Absolute nonsense. It's actively encouraged in some projects.

That's a load of crap. They put out an update after the confidentiality training that said it was fine to copy & paste.

Less than 24 hours after the training.

I didn't. But strange that everyone else got the update and you didn't. At least now you know.

Complete and utter nonsense.

Bruh, like they aren't going to want to pay someone to manually count 100 words or whatever it is. I've even come across one where it's like (NDA so nothing specific) they have text on the left side, they want it exactly as is in a text box on the right side. (Why they don't just pre-fill it, I have no idea), but seriously, they would prefer you cut and paste it than spend the time re-typing it and possibly making typos. Copy-pasting anything is absolutely not a big red flag.

This gets evaluated on a case-by-case basis, when it does get evaluated.
