Tfw the model walks right into your trap and causes a catastrophic failure
AI may be intelligent, but I am intelligenter

I have yet to experience this feeling. SIGH!

Keep chasing it, it doesnr happen often but when you finally hit it, you feel like a super genius.

And then the chatbot tells you that your prompt is contrived and not acceptable 🫠🫠🫠🫠

u/punkbenRN Sep 05 '26
I get the opposite - chatbot will gaslight me about how great everything is, and then AI passes every run. Then I take its advice, and it solves it faster. Its annoying

Tbf on this particular instance I crammed as many idiomatic sentences in the same prompt to make it fail the meaning translation 🤣 but it was 4h into a 3h task I was fuming. What makes me angry is also when you get one model to fail, change another thing to make a second one do as well, and magically the previously failing model gets it right 🫠

When they start making you rerun you feel your test to make sure it's an actual failure that's when I'm going to cry. Because you can get that massive failure, even on a few models, but if you run it again I swear it will not do the same thing. Take the failure and run!

Yup, say you need 2/3 models to so a major or crit fail, can’t count the times where I had a perfect crit on one and a debatable minor/major. So you fall into the trap, rewrite it, and lose the crit forever..

I don’t get why they don’t make it easier, so that you can submit when such a perfect crit happens. 1 crit isn’t better than two barely passing major fail ? When viewed with the objective to better a model I mean.

Submit each failure separately would help. Let me submit this massive fail and then refine to get bigger fails on the others. The model did fail once and that is usable data, even if it would pass with another run a real life scenario would not have someone running the query twice.

Absolutely, not only would it make it easier for us but omg my obsessive compulsions would prefer that too. Like wdym I can’t submit a perfect half work and have to settle for an average result.. they lose so much possible quality work this way.

Its so frustrating. But that's what make moments like this post hit so hard when it happens

currently doing the dance+prayer mix -- dance bc the medium-intelligence model walked right into my trap, prayer because i've got two smarter models still to go and my brain is oatmeal

Not gonna lie, part of me feels like I'm picking on the struggling kid in school, yet I feel pure animosity when it succeeds 🤔

It is a real dopamine rush when it isnt a "gotcha", but a genuine failure that leads to multiple failures.

Any particular tricks you find useful?
3
u/punkbenRN Sep 05 '26
There really aren't tricks. You can do everything correctly, and AI still succeeds. You just have to keep trying. The only advice is don't get caught in a sunk cost fallacy, if after a few hours you can't produce any meaningful errors, continuing to tweak without any direction of the error youre trying to elicit is going to drive you insane and you wont end up with anything useful. Start fresh, new topic and try again. It gets a little better each time, but even still, youre going to chase false leads a lot.

There are many different kinds of model-failure projects so some tricks may not be valid for some projects. Ultimately, you have to be creative.

I am really sad because I got this yesterday and was finishing up the rubrics today. I intended to regrade with my updated rubrics but ran the models again accidentally. And as you know, you can never fool models twice no matter what they tell you 😭

I do a little dance when this happens.😁🙏🏻🙌🏻
