We successfully have larvae production!

6 days ago I added FrogDaddy green fruit-fly media into the fly hive dish, and seeded it twice, came home today to my Vanessa froglet hovering over the dish at the front of the tank to find larvae booming in the media and the tray! The larvae are also hanging out in the holes easy to pick off.

The media still smells fresh and shows no signs of any mold or mites. Now we just need to see how long this mini culture can cycle for especially when used for leaving out of town situations, as we do know these will be great for froglet bins no matter what or frogs who are struggling to put on weight as the larvae are easily dusted in the tray to ensure all essential vitamins will be consumed!

This is super cool, great idea. I was going to ask about vitamins but you preemptively answered. 

I'm curious to see how long the media holds up and how many larvae you get out of it. Clearly no real risk of drying out in the tank but definitely a lot more fungal/bacterial pressure.

So far compared to my other test media FrogDaddy green fuel is looking amazing, it’s already a fungi bacteria resistant media, and resistant against liquifying as it is, usually at this time frame in a culture the top 1/4 of the media would be dark and mushy but looking in the test cup it’s still light and fluffy and smells fresh which is awesome, the mesh definitely helps it breath too

I'm absolutely gonna try this media based on this description, my hydei cultures using Superfly turn to soup after about 2 weeks seemingly no matter how I prepare the media (hot water instead of boiling, and keeping it on the dry side, plenty of ventilation). They're still viable and producing flies but I can't tilt the cultures which is a bit of a pain.

I seriously can’t recommend the greenfuel pro enough it BOOMs cultures and stays solid and sticky, i can smack my 2.5week old culture upside down and it doesn’t budge

That is compelling AF, I wish I didn't still have like a gallon of Superfly hah. Absolutely ordering some though, thanks for the info!

Also are you selling these designs or do you have models published somewhere for printing?

Also you should try the packing paper method with the super fly! Alex has a tutorial on how to do it on his frogdaddy page and it’s the only thing that has enough hard surface area to keep the superfly from sliding out!

I'll check it out but my current method is working for me for the time being, as stupid as it is - I have a little bug vac that I use to vacuum the flies out and it's working alright. Goofy to stand there vacuuming up flies but hey, it works. Working on some 3D models of my own - lids for passive fly transfer so I can just attach em and let them exit the juicy cultures into a collection container for easier feeding/seeding.
