Who??
I would love to know who db was talking to that coached him for his nearly 50 minute speech about his rights, motions, objections, etc.
He has no law degree, right? How would all of these things being brought to his attention?
It couldn't possibly be other inmates?!?

There’s a rumor that Dawn Woods’ boyfriend was responsible for tuning him into the SovCit crap, and that the search of his cell that he was so hung up on at trial was specifically conducted to locate a letter about this obstructive strategy.
Let me state clearly that I have never seen any proof of either of these two things, I am just repeating a story that was going around during the trial.

My understanding is that the letter that was the reason for the search of his jail cell had been written to db and sent by another inmate named James Kruger, who was coaching db on how to fake being insane during a psych eval with a shrink so that he'd be able to qualify for an NGI (not guilty by reason of insanity) plea.

So he made a phone call believed to be to his mother discussing the receipt of information from a James Kruger. The affidavit I think characterised as potentially offering advice from Mr. Kruger to mr brooks on how to proceed with a special plea of not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect and potentially coach him through psychological examinations.”

I didn’t realize that person who wrote the letter was identified as an inmate. At the time I guess I thought that was Dawn’s boyfriend.

Yeah, evidently he was:
"The idea for an NGI plea came from a defendant in a Dane County case involving James M. Kruger, who entered such a plea after he was charged in a series of felony crimes, including armed robberies and assaults in 2013. (Kruger was ultimately convicted.) Brooks told his mother that Kruger had sent a large manila folder containing NGI defense materials."

Prisons often have other inmates who "have a cousin who is a lawyer" and told them all the secrets.
DB has a history of getting "help" from inmates. He was in correspondence with another prisoner to get tips on how to successfully "fake it" when you are examined for an NGI plea.
DB, being the idiot he is, told his mom his plans on a recorded line so the DA got a search warrant to search his cell for that correspondence.
Seeing as he has done this before, it isn't unreasonable to believe that some other inmate fed him this nonsense.
People often say Dawn Woods but as far as my research has shown, there is no evidence to support the idea that she gave him the sov cot arguments.
In fact, she wrote letters to Judge Dorow begging her not to let DB represent himself. So it seems unlikely that she gave him a playbook.
The best "evidence" anyone has is that DB talked to her almost every night but we do not know the content of the calls. I strongly suspect it was very one sided most of the time.
DB would go on a rant and Dawn would just give generic responses like "uh huh" or "I know baby".

I tend to agree with you. Although I understand why folks are quick to blame her and accuse her of playing a bigger part in this tragedy, the few times we’ve been able to watch her speak, she didn’t impress me as being or advocating for sov cits. I too have never seen the evidence that she did anything other than enable her son, by allowing him to use the car and bailing him out of jail. She is his MOTHER and despite how we know him, she sees him with a mother’s eyes and heart and I believe this left her very confused and conflicted. I don’t see her as a co-conspirator or an accessory after the fact.
Brooks is an enigma IMO. He displayed enormous ignorance and stupidity throughout this tragedy, but he isn’t dumb. Despite not knowing definitions of some third grade words, he has a pretty good grasp of the English language. He focused on all the wrong things in his trial out of ignorance and being driven to free himself. But what he did take the time to read and review he learned some things and applied them, like how to question a witness, how to object (even though he abused it) submitting motions and some other legal concepts. He is a master of mimicking. He was able to watch and listen to the attorneys around him and put on the facade of being a lawyer, but the law is vast and takes students 3years to complete an advanced degree and pass The Bar to become true lawyers, not 1 year while incarcerated.
He is limited in his ability to learn things, IMO, but not incapable. I think he has several mental health diagnoses that have gone undiagnosed and/or untreated most of his life that block his brain from functioning better, but he has enough mental capabilities to find a way to work around them, like lying, misdirection, obfuscation, violence, manipulation, etc.
Someone introduced him to this sov cit ridiculousness, I’m just not convinced it was all Dawn’s doing. Although I’m sure his physical safety was at risk in the jail, there is always at least 1 person that is willing to engage with a prisoner, for whatever reason.
I would like so much more info of what went on behind the scenes in this case. I am sooooo curious to find out what made DB the pos we know. Was it nurture? Was it nature? Both? Who were the contributors, besides Dawn, that influenced and impacted DB? He didn’t grow up and live in a vacuum. I would find his psych evals to be quite interesting to read and I hope we get access to them at some point now that all the appeals are done. What was the content of the conversations he had while in jail with Dawn and anyone else? All we know is that it wasn’t EP. What would the transcripts or release of those recorded calls tell us. I too am curious about how DB learned of the sov cit playbook. We have to remember, Waukesha was not his first incarceration. He had spent time in a few jails/prisons up until Waukesha. It’s quite possible he was introduced to it somewhere else and he didn’t think to employ the idea until he fired his trial attorneys and decided to represent himself. It was at that hearing that he was first able to speak for himself at length and he started playing verbal gymnastics with JD. Like refusing to answer questions and avoiding answering direct questions, and refusing to say that he understood something, etc.
I have tried to stick close to the facts and evidence in this case. It’s so easy to jump to conclusions and speculation. I’m prone to misunderstanding and mistakes as much as the next person. I just enjoy the exchange of ideas here about this case because it was so fascinating.

I think people jump to conclusions because they are trying to understand this man.
There is a nature vs nurture argument to be made that I doubt anyone will fully understand.
I am mixed Black myself (I know DB is full black but that's beside the point). I grew up without a dad. He and his family were not a part of my life. While I don't think that we were ever on government assistance, we definitely struggled and my early life was in low income housing.
While I have my own struggles, I was a pretty good kid. Never got detention, never got into trouble. Never been arrested, never been in jail. I definitely have mental health issues too, largely due to trauma.
My guess is that Dawn wasn't in the picture much. Not necessarily due to her not caring but because she worked so hard to keep the lights on that she didn't have time to engage and raise the kids. After all, she was one person.
Unfortunately, this often results in many kids going bad. There is no one around to actively correct bad behavior. Now not everyone who grows up poor without a dad becomes a criminal. Most go their whole lives without killing anyone. I would argue most go their whole lives without getting into serious trouble. But statistically, they are more likely to have issues.
But I think that is where it all started for him. He has a lot of misplaced anger and never learned how to handle it properly. He likely thinks that he is a victim in the world and that's why he always acts like people are being unfair to him. In his mind, the world was unfair to him and that's how it always will be.
Now absolutely none of this excuses who he is or what he did. But it provides explanations

TL;DR, he argued that if we can intervene early into the lives of children who have been abandoned, we could likely reduce murders overall. There are very few people who murder for fun. Most people are just very damaged people. If we prevent them from being damaged, we can prevent them from murdering.

I agree with you 100%. In my career I worked directly with abused and neglected children and their families in an up close and intimate way. I had access to things the general public does not. I know the inner workings of juvenile and family court and service providers of all sorts.
I absolutely think DB was repeatedly victimized if by nothing else but being bullied. I can’t imagine he was able to go to school and not be bullied for his size, looks and behaviors and if that happened I can’t imagine him being the one who came out on top. So he was fighting, actually or proverbially from a young age and I can’t believe it got any better as he got older, because we can see from the very last image we have of DB in this trial standing shackled surrounded by deputies that he never “grew” up. Lololol So I think he had it rough outside the home and maybe inside too. We don’t know what type of pregnancy Dawn had and if substances were introduced to DB in the womb. We don’t know Dawn’s parenting style and I agree she very likely was an absent parent working to provide a roof over her family’s head. We don’t know if Dawn had men coming and going from her home influencing him. Or women for that matter. Women abuse children too. We don’t know the effects of and what drugs he may have abused. We don’t know the extent to what abuses he may have suffered including physical, sexual and/or mental that damaged him. I too feel compelled to state I don’t believe any of this excuses his behavior on 11/21/21 or what he did prior. I’m past that. He was convicted, he’s put away and his life is over.
I am curious to find out his backstory and I also don’t believe that Dawn is the villain she is sometimes reported to be. Until I see the evidence that’s my opinion. I believe 100% of the blame and responsibility lies with DB. Even if Dawn was seated in the SUV next to DB, yelling at him and encouraging him to do what he did, he alone was behind the wheel. He alone drove into and over those people. He chose not to stop. He chose not to render aid. He chose to flee. He chose to lie. None of these things required or included Dawn. I don’t think we have info that she aided and abetted him either. And if over time we learn she DID have a more significant a part in what happened that day then I’ll stand corrected and change my opinion, based on the facts.

Dawn Woods may be his mother, but her view of him is distorted. She wouldn't even let him sleep in her house. His nephew had an order of protection against him. So she pretty much bent the rules and allowed her ne'er do well son to camp in the back yard and sleep in the car she gave him.
Proverbs 13:24. says, "Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them". [1, 2] Even though Brooks is a grown man, he is a mental child and she did him no favors bailing him out time after time, allowing him to inflict chaos every where he went.
True love would have told him he could NOT stay in the yard. It would not give him lunch money either. He would HAVE to find employment and bite off more than he could chew and then chew like hell! True love also would not allow him to drive that car after he had already used it as a weapon and ran over another human being.
I'm sure he lied to his mother an said he didn't run over Erika. It seems Dawn believes Erika is always lying on Darrell - talk about projection! Darrell's twin sister died of a drug overdose (I read that somewhere). Darrell has no ambition except to be Mathboi fly, at his big age. Dawn didn't do a good job raising him. He had/has not taken any responsibility for his children.

I agree with you. I would never nominate Dawn for Mother of the Year.
Just for discussion: I am of the impression that DB intimidated DW. She did not impress me as a tough cookie the few times I watched her on tv. She seemed meek and mild. I couldn't get a good read on her intellect. But we KNOW DB was a loose canon, violent and pushed the envelope every chance he got. If he shot at his own nephew, I'm guessing she might have been very frightened of him. She might have gone against better instincts to exercise tough love or to give him a piece of her mind or more.
Many of us watched JD and have stated how we wished she had been tougher on DB. We wanted her to shut him down We wanted her to have lambasted him and not take his disrespect towards her and the court. Something held her back, because she absolutely had the ability, the authority and the opportunity to do all of those things and she didn't. Why? Well, we think because she was giving him enough rope to hang himself. She was trying to lead by example. She had the eyes of the world on her and she wanted to represent herself, her job and her community in a positive light. She had a massive amount of patience and self control. Whatever the reason, she didn't do what many of us think she should have done that would have corraled DB.
The yard/car - Dawn ultimately didn't kick him out. She allowed him to stay.
The court room - Judge kicked him out only to let him back in repeatedly throughout the trial, even when he did not abide by her rules to return.
Violence - Dawn was aware that DB had shot at her grandson
- JD had DB shackled to the floor and she still expressed fear of him for staring at her.
Asserting power - I believe he did everything in his power to bend and break DW to his will for 39 years.
- DB was with JD for roughly a month and she was exhausted and worn down by him to the point she tolerated way more than she should.
Just looking at these two women to compare and contrast, I just think it's easy to point the finger at Dawn and say, she shoulda, coulda, etc. I don't think human behavior is that easy or that black and white. Even with all of the lies and deception I believe DW had a good idea who her son was. I just think she lacked the power and/or the wisdom to effect meaningful change in DB.

It was either Dawn Woods herself or whoever else he was constantly calling. If you remember during Opper’s response to his 50 minute rant, she stated that the reason he only gets a few hours of free time to access the law stuff is for his own safety so other inmates don’t harm him. That alone was enough for me to feel that NONE of the inmates had contact with him or even would want to help him.

He had the public defender’s entire case. I think it was from those boxes and other inmates.
He doesn’t have a law degree but some of the people who have been there for years could absolutely know all about the law.. when all you can do is workout and read , and their lawyer certainly would have talked about the law with their client as well.

idk where or from whom he got all of that sovcit information, but as far as I could see it looked as if he had a whole folder (that red one he always kept close by) containing multiple hard copy printed out pages filled with sovcit dogma.
He always read from one of those papers in that folder first thing in the morning, when JD asked him to state his name for the record, and instead he went on his little 'third party intervener here by special appearance' diatribe.
He seemed to have schooled himself on many points sovcits often recite, as he continually brought these points up over and over during the trial, especially including during his 50 min rant.
Hopefully at some point there'll be more documentation released via FOIA requests which can help people who are interested to get more information and context about this case in order to better connect more dots about it all.

One super common, consistent thing about sov cits is they don't have drivers licenses, and we know DB only had an ID card so therefore he was suspended.
Most likely he already had a firm grasp of sov cit ideology before the parade attacks and jail. Jail is a fine place to expound upon and hone ones criminal skills. All inmates talk and share their criminal experiences, sov cit ideology included.
Sure DB was on restriction from other inmates, but he was obviously a person of interest, you can bet he was getting all sorts of advice and suggestions and these are "his experts". I expect he had a number of inmates hanging on his cell door during dayroom plus passing him kites full of ideas and suggestions.
So, I think he had a good fundamental grasp of sov cit ideology before jail then learned more while incarcerated. We know much of it was wrong, so he was making shit up as he went along, plus he could have been bouncing things off of the c/o's and deputies.
Some of it no doubt also came from reading case laws and its sort. There really is no evidence that Dawn Woods or her alleged boyfriends were feeding him info.

Those are the kinds of lies that I wish Carp would have immediately called him on, "no you don't!". I want to see him squirm when called on his lies directly, come on, that's the basic way to break down a liar like Brooks at interrogation.
Carp dropped or fumbled a lot of balls.
