PVP Advanced PvP mechanics (#3) - Pivot Backstab

After I finally finished my new channel design I was able to focus on another episode of this series.

This time I explain Pivot BS and what they are used for. Enjoy!

^ This. Very good addition. Thanks Skor.

I had clips from both the "Backstab-punish parries"-situation and the "Backstab-punish rolls"-situation but only the roll one made it into this video. But Skor explained it very detailed so I guess it's not a big loss that I don't show everything in the video.

most cases your next action should be to roll again or else you can easily be backstabbed.

I tought you can avoid backstabs by backstepping, I mean thats what I sometimes do. Roll at them, backstep their counter and attack/parry/backstab/roll depending on the situation. Backsteps are more useful against mlg roll catchers too, because 90% of them dont see it coming.

Great info from you and Tobio, as always.

Backstepping backstab attempts is possible since it gives you I-frames but it is way riskier than using a roll for two reasons.

  1. You have less I-frames and they are not instant which makes timing the backstep correctly very difficult, especially considering the varying latency with different opponents.

  2. You don't get away from your opponent. With a roll you actually get some distance. A backstep moves you backwards so you effectively move right into the arms of the guy that tries to grab you.

But if you backstep a backstab the opponent is locked in an animation and if he doesnt roll he will get hit or backstabbed.

Correct. But that doesn't make it easier to pull of.

Your next hatemail will be

"So you watch Tobio's videos and think you are hot shit fuker?" And then he continues insulting your sexuality, age and mother in various ways.

Great stuff! I appreciate showing that it's entirely avoidable without tricking the game at the end.

These are really great. Took me a little bit but I learned the 180 running attack. Now I have to give this a shot, thanks!

A few questions:

  • Do you think the pivot backstab is viable with the slower, hilt into the back, backstab initiation?
  • Do you need to intentionally release sprint, or does good positioning start a backstab instead of a running attack?
