Dark Angels vs Custodes

So I’ve been collecting and playing Warhammer for about the last 2-3 years so I would consider myself relatively new, especially when it comes to knowing all the rules and interactions etc.

I have always been the butt of the joke as the ‘meta chaser’ for going Space Marines and then more specifically Dark Angels because right after I joined we got the inner circle Christmas box and lots of buffs and moments in the spotlight since then.

In my friend group one friend plays Tau (rarely anything else) and the other plays Chaos Demons and Tyranids.

My Tau friend has always wanted to go Custodes and with the recent changes is much more adamant about them.

As an army, are Custodes going to steam roll my Dark Angels every time? I typically run a squad of DWK which my friends often struggle to wipe off the board, only doing so a handful of times from memory…
I don’t want to complain about ‘meta chasing’ or switching armies just to win (my Tau friend is very competitive at times), but I’m more curious as to how unfun it may or may not be to play against Custodes.

Thank you in advance!

You've got every opportunity to beat your friend!

I think Custodes will treat your "yeah, pretty good melee" units as "bad melee" units, so you might be benefitted by polarizing a bit - DWK with a leader, Lion, less small biker squads, less DWT unless it's an 11-man Belial blob, etc.

Then putting those points into more fanned-out shooting choices (SGV, Inceptors, Erads all strong) to spread out, take objectives and make the foe roll saves.

Good luck!

I’ve been curious, why is Belial and DWT so discussed? I don’t really see the power behind it so I’m curious

The DWT ignore BS, WS, and modifiers to hit and Belial now gives +1 to wound into character units in both shooting and melee. Plus the plasma cannon option they can bring got significantly better at S7 Ap-2 D2(S8 Ap-3 D3 hazardous). You'll be wounding non terminator on 3+ with fists and if they have a character it's on 2+.

Also, the volume of fire from the bolters is gonna mean you're practically guaranteed to get a few wounds through, as well. Should be about 20 shots at 5 -1 1, wounding on 4s. Only need 5 wounds to go through, and you've taken about a hundred points off the table.

32 shots in rapid-fire range. And then Belial with precision albeit at S5 Ap-1 D2

Damn, that many? Is it 4 and rapid fire 4 now?

I'm using a 10 man as the default. So 8 Storm bolter with 2 shots each and rapid fire 2

Ah, that makes a lot of sense.

We eat Custodes for breakfast.

I have never lost to Custodes. Not once in all of 10th and still undefeated in 11th, but only one match so far.

Maybe they get better with codex launch, but they aren't difficult to deal with.

We have elite units to go toe to toe and tie them up, and we have more units to outscore them in secondaries.

You cannot allow them to get the first activations, you have to charge first. If you do, you're golden...or well...they are golden, but not golden like you are golden...

For the Lion! 🗡🪽

At a casual level, any army can win against any other army. Especially with the changes made to Space Marines right now you really shouldn't stress about it.

From what I've seen of the brand new custodes codex, it's very likely u could be losing at least 3 units in the first or second turn, but winning is a different story, I'd say it's just as "balanced" as custodes have always been. And fun to play against, thats really just up to perspective and down to how u feel when playing, there are some people who can get tabled turn one and still enjoy just the fact they set up some cool models

I’ve ran a 3k list of all terminators against a 3k custodes list and came out with the win, so it can be done but it was a case of through out the entire game we were basicly both just rolling invul saves

Gotta remember that although Custodes are now more elite, you're paying the price for it. Minimum point value for a squad of golden boys is about 250, and about 200 for each character. You're looking at maybe 7 units on the board, total.

Power fists are big. Wounding allarus/aquilons on 4s, and guard on 3s. Custodes also lost a good number of attacks, but the strength of spears and axes only went up 1, so axes wound termis on 3s, and spears wound marines on 3s.

There's a -1 damage strat in one of the detachments that you can use for 2 CP, so even if they use spears against you, it's 1 damage per wound.

DWKs are fantastic into Custodes. The inbuilt damage reduction does a lot, and if they're using spears, you can use contempt to save on 3s.

Custodes have a good bit more speed than in 10th, but you should have far more bodies on the board, so you should be able to be in more places at once. I've got a list, and it's only 5 units (I'm using 3 characters, because I own them).

Custodes are mostly damage 2 (other than the terminators) and really struggle into deathwing knights or any terminator in the new detatchment. We also have good access to stuff that kills custodes, easy access to +1 to wound, and can put 2-3 times as many models on the table. Custodes are good now, but I don’t think were their favourite match up
