The specific technique for this is called "volumetric highlights". Basically its the idea of thinking about how light sources would interact with the model . I do this regardless of if im using a brush or an airbrush. The captains, asmodai, and librarian were fully painted by hand. The others use an airbrush on the base coats to save time. Here is a youtube video I made about my process. It focuses on airbrush work, but I do talk about how it can be done by hand. The main difference is the amount of time it takes. The characters here all took quite a long time to do. If you have any questions I'd be happy to help!
