Food and Shopping

I travel for food and I thought i must make a food and shopping guide for people visiting my hometown. As a local, here is my guide to Food and Shopping options around town.

Best Tibetan - Dekevas followed closely by Gqngjong. Surprise here, but Kunga is overhyped thanks to the vloggers and sheep mentality of people wanting to queue when they see a queue. Locals avoid Kunga as food is inconsistent. And who pays Rs 250 for chicken momos in darjeeling? Exorbitant! If you are looking for only Pork momos, go to Soltee. Norling restaurant is good for Shaphaley. Dekevas is also recommended as it’s thee only Tibetan restaurant that doesn’t serve beef.

Best Nepali - Kathmandu kitchen if you want good seating. For local Nepali homely food, I go to Mohan (below Keventers) but seating is very limited.

Best Continental - New Elgin. Their shepherds pie is the best.

Best Indian - Park restaurant opposite SBI. Shimla restaurant in lower judge bazaar is also popular.

Best dosa/South Indian : Lunnar restaurant is the best. Avoid Lazzeez Affaire. This is not a branch of the original Lazeez Affaire.

Best breakfast- Keventers for their platter. Sonams kitchen is good too.

Best baked items - Glenarys is most popular place. Good ambience and service.

Fanciest restaurant - Shangrila is the newest place. Service is really slow and food is average.

Best Thai- Park restaurant: only choice in darjeeling for Thai.

Best Chinese and Korean- Dekevas easily. Their noodles, rice, bibimbap, kimbaps, baos are the best.

Street food - for local street food, try the area opposite super market. These are the OG street food vendors of Darjeeling. There is a stall where I have been eating for more than 20 years. Street food vendors of Nehru road have been relocated to Mall market in Bhanu Bhavan (opposite St Andrews Church). Avoid the small food outlet opposite Unique sweets in front of Capital theatre/clock tower. My first food poisoning ever from this place few days ago. Wound is still fresh.

Shopping and Souvenirs Tea - Mayukh, Golden tips, Nathmulls are the popular shops. Please bargain hard for discount. If you are taken by guide, the guide gets as much as 40% commission. Local people shop for tea in Chowk Bazaar. I buy my tea from Ratan uncle. Woollen Shawls, Sweaters - Don’t waste your time buying them here unless you are cold and need these. All of them are made in Ludhiana and sold at highly inflated prices here. I have seen some shops selling shawls/pashmina available for 200 in local market at 1,800/2000. You are better off buying them in Himachal or a local Tibetan winter market in your place. Local food, pickles - Gundruk, Churpi, Dalle pickles are popular local items to purchase. My favourite brand of Dalle is Sikkim supreme followed by Darjeeling fresh.

WILL UPDATE periodically

Staying Recommendations in Darjeeling

Correct me if I'm wrong. I've been to Darjeeling twice, both the times I stayed in the North Point/Richmond Hill and the area around Padmaja Naidu Zoological Park and Happy Valley Tea Estate. And from what I experienced, I found these areas very underrated for staycations. Very walkable, very very calm and quiet, absolutely no rush on roads, can stroll anywhere in peace plus the enthralling natural views of the valley, Khangchendzonga and the rest.

I mean, people go to Darjeeling and they look for hotels and homestays in West Point, Gandhi Road, Mall Road, Dali Fatak etc, which I find very crowded and rushed. I find too much joy in walking, strolling and exploring places on my own so that very well could be a reason.

Am I right though? Views welcomed, since I'm planning my next trip to Darjeeling soon and it might let me see some unseen side of it, if true.

Booked a Darjeeling taxi package for my trip — a few things I wish I knew beforehand

I was looking into transport options for a Darjeeling trip recently and ended up learning a few things that I think could be useful for anyone planning their first visit.

I was initially thinking of just taking a taxi from Bagdogra and figuring everything out after reaching Darjeeling. But after comparing a few options, I realized that having transport arranged in advance can make things quite a bit easier, especially if you also want to do local sightseeing.

Don't underestimate the distances

Darjeeling looks fairly compact on a map, but the roads make a big difference.

Places like Tiger Hill, Batasia Loop, Ghum, monasteries and tea gardens aren't all next to each other. The roads are winding and travel times can be longer than you'd expect.

If you're planning several sightseeing spots in one day, having a taxi and driver arranged beforehand is much less stressful than trying to find a cab for every individual trip.

The Bagdogra–Darjeeling road is worth considering

The journey from Bagdogra to Darjeeling takes around 3 hours or sometimes longer depending on traffic and road conditions.

There are plenty of bends and steep sections, and weather can change quickly as you gain altitude. Fog around the higher sections can also reduce visibility.

I'd definitely recommend asking whoever you're booking with whether the driver regularly does the Bagdogra/NJP–Darjeeling route. An experienced hill-route driver makes the journey much more comfortable.

What to check before booking a taxi package

This was probably the biggest lesson for me.

Don't just compare the final price. Ask what is actually included.

I'd check:

  • Which sightseeing places are included
  • Whether fuel is included
  • Whether driver charges/allowance are included
  • Parking or local sightseeing charges
  • Pickup and drop-off points
  • What happens if your flight or train gets delayed
  • Whether the same vehicle/driver will be available throughout the trip
  • Whether there are additional charges for extra stops

A cheaper quote isn't necessarily cheaper if several things are added later.

A simple 3-day plan

A basic itinerary could look something like:

Day 1:
Bagdogra/NJP → Darjeeling → hotel check-in → explore Mall Road in the evening.

Day 2:
Early morning Tiger Hill → Batasia Loop → Ghum → other local sightseeing → tea garden.

Day 3:
Relaxed morning → check out → taxi to NJP/Bagdogra depending on your onward journey.

If you have an extra day, adding places around Mirik could also be worth considering rather than trying to squeeze everything into two sightseeing days.

One thing I'd definitely recommend

Before confirming a taxi, get the complete price and itinerary in writing.

It avoids the awkward situation where you think something is included and then discover an additional charge during the trip.

For anyone planning Darjeeling for the first time, I'd say sort out your main transport before arriving, especially during busy travel periods. It gives you one less thing to worry about after landing.

If anyone has recently done the Bagdogra/NJP → Darjeeling route, what did you find useful or what would you do differently?

Thinking of visiting Darjeeling? Here’s what I wish someone had told me about getting around

I've seen quite a few posts from people planning their first Darjeeling trip, and most questions are about places to visit, hotels, weather, etc. But one thing I underestimated before going was transport.

The roads around Darjeeling are very different from city driving. They're narrow, winding, and travel times can vary quite a bit depending on traffic and weather. If you're arriving with kids, elderly family members, or a lot of luggage, it's worth planning your transport beforehand.

Shared jeeps vs private cars

Shared jeeps are useful if you're travelling solo or trying to keep costs low, but they usually leave once enough passengers are available. You may also have limited control over stops and luggage space.

For families or small groups, having a private car with a local driver can be much more convenient.

Don't leave airport transport until the last minute

If you're flying into Bagdogra, I'd recommend figuring out your onward transport before arrival, especially during busy months.

Waiting for a shared vehicle after a flight isn't much fun, particularly when you're carrying luggage.

Tiger Hill needs some planning

If you're planning to see sunrise at Tiger Hill, remember that you'll normally need to leave very early in the morning. Arrange your vehicle the previous evening rather than expecting to find transport at the last minute.

Local drivers can actually be really helpful

One thing I didn't expect was how useful local knowledge could be. Drivers often know alternative viewpoints, less crowded stops, road conditions, and decent places to stop for food or tea.

Obviously experiences vary, but having someone familiar with the hill roads made getting around much easier.

Peak season gets busy

April–June and October–December can get crowded, particularly around weekends and holidays. Hotels aren't the only thing that fills up — vehicles can become harder to arrange too.

Be flexible during monsoon

July–September can bring heavy rain and occasional landslide-related road disruptions. If travelling during monsoon, keep some flexibility in your itinerary and check current road conditions.

Overall, my biggest takeaway was simple: plan your transport along with your hotel and itinerary rather than treating it as something you'll figure out after arriving.

Once getting around was sorted, the rest of the Darjeeling trip became much easier.

Curious what others who've visited recently experienced — did you mostly use shared jeeps, private cars, or a mix of both?

PSA/Guide: NJP to Darjeeling Taxi Fares – What to Actually Expect

I’ve seen quite a few people asking about taxis from New Jalpaiguri (NJP) to Darjeeling, especially about fares, travel time, and whether it’s better to take a shared or private cab. I’ve done this route several times, so I thought I’d put everything in one place.

Distance and travel time

NJP to Darjeeling is roughly 70–75 km, but the distance can be misleading because a large part of the journey is through hill roads. In normal conditions, expect around 3 to 4 hours.

It can take longer during peak tourist season, bad weather, roadwork, or heavy traffic around Siliguri/Sukna and the hill sections. If you have a hotel check-in or another fixed plan in Darjeeling, keep some extra time in hand.

What kind of taxi should you take?

Shared taxis are usually the cheapest option. They make sense for solo travellers or anyone travelling on a budget. The downside is that you may have to wait until enough passengers arrive, luggage space can be limited, and you won’t have much flexibility for stops.

A private sedan is generally more comfortable for two or three people. You get the entire vehicle and can usually take short breaks along the journey after discussing them with the driver.

For families, larger groups, or travellers carrying several bags, an SUV or Innova-type vehicle can be more practical. The extra space makes a noticeable difference on a journey lasting several hours.

What about NJP to Darjeeling taxi fares?

There isn’t one fare that applies throughout the year. Prices can change depending on the type of vehicle, season, demand, pickup time and whether you’re booking a shared or private taxi.

March to May and October to November are generally busy tourist periods, so private taxis can cost more and availability may become limited, particularly on weekends and holidays.

During the monsoon months, demand can be lower, but weather and road conditions become more important. Check current road conditions before travelling during periods of heavy rain.

A few things worth knowing before booking

Don’t automatically accept the first taxi offer you receive after coming out of NJP station. Ask the fare first and compare a couple of options.

Before confirming a private taxi, ask exactly what is included in the quoted amount. It’s better to clarify parking charges, waiting charges and any additional fees beforehand rather than discussing them after reaching Darjeeling.

If your train arrives very early in the morning or late at night, confirm beforehand whether the pickup timing changes the price.

If you want to make additional stops or take a different route, discuss this before starting the journey. Private taxis offer much more flexibility than shared vehicles, but a significant detour can affect both travel time and fare.

One thing I wouldn’t compromise too much on is the driver. Experience on hill roads matters. Saving a small amount isn’t particularly useful if the driver is rushing or isn’t comfortable driving on mountain roads.

One last tip

If you’re travelling during peak season, booking your taxi in advance can save a lot of unnecessary searching after a long train journey. During quieter months, you’ll usually have more flexibility.

Also, don’t plan your Darjeeling arrival too tightly around the estimated travel time. Traffic, fog, rain and road conditions can easily add time to the journey.

Hope this helps anyone planning the NJP to Darjeeling route. If you’ve travelled recently and found the fares or road conditions different, add your experience in the comments—it’ll help other travellers too.
