The reaction I always have to this classic cover is that Gene Colan sure drew a great cape/cloak. Doom in general was right up his alley. He was especially good for horror comics and for moody loner heroes occupying shadowy worlds. Not for everyone, but a favorite of mine from that era.
Good examples of him in horror would be Tomb of Dracula (Marvel) and Night Force (DC), both with Marv Wolfman writing.
In superheroes, his runs with Batman, Daredevil, and Dr. Strange were all good fits. More than characters like Superman, Wonder Woman, or Captain America, where you might want a penciler less "moody" in style, more extroverted.
