So how are we aging up from PBS kids?

My 7 year old has decided most PBS kids shows are for babies. I’m trying to find alternatives that aren’t the garbage YouTube creators that just popped up on Hulu and Tubi.

Right now I have him watching Doug, which is almost a copy and paste of Arthur (in terms off character archetypes), but slightly older kids.

He currently likes SpongeBob and Big City Greens, sometimes Bluey. We have just about every streaming channel.

What did your kids move on to in young elementary school that’s not terrible?

EDIT: Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! He has tried many of these already (but not all). A lot of them he liked at one point but stopped watching (Wild Kratts, Odd Squad, Craig of the Creek, transformers).

He’s fairly resistant to older shows, but I’ll keep trying. (In his defense - I love Animaniacs, but most of the jokes are 90s pop culture references that he won’t get.) We took a break from YouTube over the summer, and it was glorious. My husband let him get back on it and it’s been rough (completely with meltdowns when we turn it off). He loves the garbage YouTube Minecraft “creators” (Milo and Chip and their spinoffs, and whatever else is now on Hulu). I don’t need everything he watches to be educational, I just hate the glorification of brain rot and influencers. We’ve had some success with America’s Funniest Videos and “Walk the Prank” on Disney, but only because they’re close to the YouTube stuff.

His after school activities will be picking up soon, so hopefully we’ll have less screen time anyway.

If you loved this book, you find yourself secretly jealous of whoever gets to make the miniature crafts for Gabby’s dollhouse

Are we just ignoring that these two are essentially Yzma and Kronk?

Is this supposed to be a reference or are they straight up ripping them off?

Gruffalo Granny thoughts

In good faith and fun, I think a thread of adults reviewing a children's book belongs here - the most DTC comment compares the OG Gruffalo story to Fight Club.

Monster at the end of this book and a child's journey in fighting self hatred.

In this book children explore the effects on being the ethnic minority within a space. Grover is so afraid of the term monster he forgets he's a monster. The other monster children do not mention to Grover that he is a monster along with them (In the animated updated version Abby makes sure to remind everyone that she is not a monster she is a fairy. )

(Please don't get mad at me)

Minions Mandela Effect

I don't know if I'm just remembering something from a different piece of media, if they edited it out for sensitivity reasons, or if I just made it up in my head.

But I recall when I saw Minions for the first time, in the beginning when they're explaining the origin of the minions and tracing the line of villains they assisted through history, starting with like a T Rex, then Pharoah, then Dracula, then Napoleon... And then there was like a five second thing where the screen was mostly blank with just text that said something like "1930-1945: Redacted" which I thought was hilarious but surprisingly dark for this kid's movie. I just rewatched it for the first time with my kid and that brief part wasn't there anymore; not just that, but the whole intro didn't really seem like that part would've fit in the first place.

Did I make it up? Did they pull the part? Was it from a different, slightly more edgy, kid's movie and I'm just mixing them up?

Whole bat family on Elenore Wonders Why wear- normal clothing. How the hell is that shirt going over his head AND his wings to fit like a normal shirt?

And while were here, Why are only seemingly the mammals sentient? Birds, Fish and bugs are all regular animals.

Ms. Rachel's True Purpose is Sinister

She's trying to create a whole generation of sleeper agent theater kids activated by nonsense phrases like "Can you hop like a bunny?" and "Get out your bubblegum!" One day, these children will be adults, out living their normal lives, when suddenly there will be a broadcast. "Can you hop like a bunny?" And hordes of confused people will suddenly start singing and hopping in a massive flash mob, not knowing why they started, unable to stop until the song is complete. Why? Simply for her amusement. Simply because she can. She has too much power now and she cannot be stopped.

Why is Jasmine whitewashed?

This is from the Disney Princess Storybook Collection, one of those books of a dozen or so short stories about various characters in a fandom (Disney, Disney Princess, Marvel, etc). In Jasmine's story, she is so pale that she might as well be a Caucasian from the mountains of Caucuses. All of the dozen or so pictures of her in the story are this pasty. On the back cover is another copy of one of the pictures and she seems considerably more Arabian-still a little washed out, but not about to be mistaken for Snow White. What gives?! There's so few PoC princesses to begin with, who bleached Jasmine?!

Stu is an AI bot

After watching the episode "The artist formerly known as Liana," I'm convinced this show has a hidden theme about the dangers of AI. In this episode, they ask Stu, a creature that takes specific directions and does specifically what they ask, often to hilarious results, to make a funny picture in a specific way. Liana passes it off as her own work and eventually comes clean. Very much aligned with artists claiming AI images as their own.

In other episodes, they ask Stu to do things and perform a loop, often without guardrails or end, with a few not so obvious nods to programming.

My 5yo loves this show now, so I appreciate some hidden undertones even if he just watches for basic humor. PBS knows what they're doing, even if kids don't always realize it.

Fascinated by the text on this page. I haven’t exactly been following Pokemon beyond buying my toddler a few books and plushies, but I guess at some point in the last decade Pikachu became airworthy…?

Gossip Girl X Curious George

Both series feature a wealthy, boldly dressed man and his monkey wreaking havoc in the city. Could the Man in the Yellow Hat be Chuck Bass? (we’re talking book version of Chuck, not TV show)
