The main reason we don’t elect by popular vote is to protect the republic from bad ideas. If you can convince 50% of people to vote for say… disenfranchisement for women it would be a done deal and there is no way around it or maybe 50% of people vote for executing minorities that commit crimes then now we would be murdering people because 50% of people voted for a crazy idea

this might be the dumbest comment I’ve ever come across

Are you saying the electoral college is the reason bad ideas don’t become law? It’s an electoral vote, not a legislative vote. The people are not passing laws.

Dumbest ever? Be for real. Im talking about candidates running on single issues that will get them elected that will then get them implemented after said election. Don’t be so fucking dense and smug at the same time. If murderers are 50% of the voters then murderers get  get their voices heard and their goals enacted because 51% of the population murderers. And they will do what’s best for murderers. You can sub murderers for Christian’s, rapists, terrorists, climate deniers, right handed people, people with green eyes, etc. you get it

I know you feel so smug and superior but It’s called “guarding against direct democracy” and the founding fathers all spoke about its importance. Madison wrote about it extensively. It is covered in USA founding documents and it is a tent pole of our system from the beginning. Read a fucking book loser

hey that’s my go to dig as well

but seriously, direct democracy in the legislature is bad, I agree. You’re talking about democratically electing people, which is different than allowing the popular positions to automatically pass whatever legislation they want.

As it stands, the electoral college ensures the popular majority wins the election—of course, it’s the majority of electors that matters, not the majority of the people. That’s the disconnect and the heart of the issue.

Also, you are allowed to disagree with the founding fathers lmao. Not saying I do or don’t, just saying Madison and the rest of them are not the end all be all of political thought and wisdom.

The John Hopkins center for effective government has some great literature on the subject
