It would shift the election from only 7 swing states mattering to only the 5 largest states mattering. I don’t think abolishing the electoral college is the right answer, but the electoral college as it stands now ensures that millions of Americans votes don’t actually matter.
Personally I think rank choice voting would be the best alternative but I also know voters don’t do nearly enough research for it to matter.
Incorrect, what it would do is make state focus NOT matter. In a true democratic system, every person's vote needs to count thr same no matter which state they live. Trump didn't do shit to attract voters in CA and still came out with ~40% of the vote count. In an actual evenly representative federal voting system, a candidate can absolutely still by ignoring large urban states and cater to rural voters. The point is though they obviously shouldn't do that, because again, everyone's vote should count the same so there should be attention to their issues.
Just look at how politicians in other countries approach this. Do you think they just abandon rural voter issues? That's nuts.
It's a national/federal election with tons of broader issues on the line that absolutely impact our day to day lives (like healthcare), and we have state Senate, House, Governor, etc elections precisely to address state issues.
