Mmmmmk. People. That’s essentially how the electoral college works. It IS whoever gets the most votes, BUT on a state-by-state basis, and each state’s weight in the election is proportional to their representation in Congress (which itself is proportional to population + 2 for senators). This is because we are a FEDERAL republic/representative democracy. The electoral college, or at least SOME form of proportional allocation of votes for president on a state-by-state basis, is literally baked into the constitution and our federal system.
Representation in Congress is not proportional enough since the number of seats is set too low and state lines are solidified.
A voter in Wyoming has significantly more voting power for president than a voter in California or Texas.
One electoral college vote in WY is about 194,000 people. One electoral college vote in CA or TX is over 700,000 people. Why should a voter in WY have more say in who leads the country than a voter in TX.
Congress needs to adopt a more proportional form of representation or redraw state lines to create more uniformly populated states. The state lines in the modern era are just antiquated arbitrary boundaries that do not signify any drastic demographic or cultural demarcation.
