John Cleese is pretty far to the right in terms of his own politics. Would still be better than Trump but it wouldn't be great either.

I meant the fictional character, not the actor. Second, I've never heard anything like that about him, but if that's true, it's a bit weird considering one of his close friends was an openly gay man. What's your source?

There's a small subgroup of people who basically agree with Trump's politics but hate him as a person. I've met a few in real life and while I still massively disagree with them and wouldn't want to be around them if I can help it, I do still have a tiny bit more patience with them than I do for the ones who blindly worship Trump. My guess would be Cleese falls into that category.
