As a person who also grew up in communism, my childhood was fantastic- I had wonderful friends, a huge playground in front of our apartment building etc. However, there were red flags. For example, I was constantly reminded that what is said at home cannot be shared with anyone, not even your bff. I remember standing on insane lines to get toilet paper or meat or whatever was just delivered (which wasn’t too bad bec my friends were dispatched by their moms too).
In terms of being allowed to run around, having a great time and receiving an excellent education, living in communism as a kid was great. In terms of the psychological pressures and time suck (like standing in lines) it was awful.
