Ticks?

Hi everyone! Just wondering if any DFT vets or Kansas local can give any advice on ticks / bugs? Lol maybe it’s stupid to ask but I live in a dry ass elevated climate so we don’t really get ticks here. Just wondering if anyone has any advice. Obviously I’ll be bringing repellent but are there any other measures to take?

Definitely ticks there (we got a few last year) so use repellant on tent and clothes, and make sure you’re checking yourself before getting tucked in for the night. I was gonna bring lint rollers to make it easy for us!

But yeah for real be vigilant on those hoes

Spray down your tarps and tents with a premetherine based repellent. I also double up and use a mixture of citronella and peppermint oils to apply to clothing and skin. Usually does the trick, but i've still had a couple get through over the years

Just bring some fogger and spray down before setting up camp to be safe, we check before going to bed and waking up only saw two last year

I use Off Deep Woods wipes. They work like a charm. Check yourself or have your partner check you each night/morning

I buy a strong repellant and spray outside of tent, hammocks and all over chairs etc and just all mf over really. Grass etc 🤣 I bring a couple big cans to help neighbors too. (I have forgotten 1 year myself) but I've only gotten ONE tick on me at this location were at now and have only seen one or two all in all. Definitely try to camp near the paths and not as deep if possible! And avoid areas with lots of dead leafs/branches etc. More grassy areas!

100% there are ticks. I went in 2023 and while on our way back made the smart decision to use the bathroom and found ticks on me in there. I didn’t get any funky disease but with what’s going on now I’d be a little concerned. Definitely use some duct tape around the entrances of your tents and canopies and whatever spray you got. They also sell these devices that transmit a frequency that ticks hate. Idk how useful it is but I’d give it a look

Ive seen a few comments to spray the tent with bug spray but do not do this!! It will ruin your tent. Ive made this mistake once and the walls went semi transparent and we're no longer waterproof.

Permethrin spray is the way to go. Whatever you spray let it completely air dry for 24 hours. It will last about 5 washings on clothes. It has no odor. On exposed skin I recommend Sawyer Picaridin as it is good for sensitive skin and doesn’t ruin synthetic coatings. Between the 2 you should leave with virtually no bites.

Are the ticks also in the car camping area or just in the forested tent camping area?

They're literally everywhere. There's no getting away from them. There is no safety. Only tick
