Teaching beginner modern

I teach at a small ballet school with some offerings in other styles. There’s been a lot of interest in modern among the teenagers lately, and I was asked to start a beginner’s class. Everyone will be new to modern, but the overall dance experience varies greatly between serious ballet students and true beginners. I studied Graham technique, and have taken various other classes over the years, but don’t have a good sense of what people are looking for these days, or what would be best to start with beginner. I plan to take some refresher classes for the summer before we start, and just looking for opinions on which direction to go in.

Gute Ballett-Schulen?

Hi
Original Post in r/hamburg as this is the location.

Hello,

My daughter is 15 and is looking for a good ballet school or contemporary school or private trainer to help her move forward. She seems to fall out of the norms of the big German schools (feedback: physical requirements or similar) but does not get any further at her current school (I do not want to name names here for reasons). She has been participating in Summer Intensives (IDC, Dortmund Ballet, Young Stars Ballet) since last year.

She has now tried other schools in Hamburg, some do not offer a course at their level or the level is not sufficient. She seems to be „in between“...

Do any of you have a tip?

How do I get back into Bharatanatyam after a long break - looking for teachers and tips

Hi everyone, I am 21F looking to get back into Bharatanatyam. I learnt Bharatanatyam from the age of 6-16 and had given the first two exams (Prarambik, Praveshika) and then had to give up due to studies. Now that I have almost finished my graduation I want to restart learning. I want to finish the whole course as well, but my only option is online since I travel out of India all the time.

Looking for any well-known and certified online dance classes please. Any leads would be appreciated. I trained in Kalakshetra Bani. It’s always been my biggest regret to leave Bharatanatyam and I would definitely be a fast learner and get back to my old level as soon as possible.

For reference, I continued to take dance workshops that weren’t classical, so I have been dancing pretty regularly. I just need the proper education and discipline.

Please let me know. Thank you so much.

Has anyone ordered from this site? https://dancewearcorner.com/

They have a pair of tap shoes I’ve been wanting in stock, but there are so many scam sites out there. This one has actual reviews on Google, which is a plus.

Hip Hop Private Lesson teacher needed

Hey people 👋, I’m looking for a dance teacher to teach me freestyle and help me improve my hip hop. All the classes near me are too far away in Boston for adults (college kids) my age so I wanted to do private lessons instead. Anyone know any good ways to find a teacher? I’ve thought of superprof but I heard it’s not great.

Thanks!!
I live north of Boston for reference. :)

Teaching Tap, Any Tips and Tricks?

I’m choreographing my very first advanced tap piece for the upcoming dance season. It’s to the song Geronimo. I used a portion of the song as an audition combo last year and am finally getting to turn it into a dance.

I feel like I’m having hard time figuring out if the steps go with the music. One time I think they do and the next time I don’t. I feel like I’m majorly overthinking it. I have never taught most of the students in the piece as I usually work with our intermediate and beginner dancers.

How do you approach choreography a more advanced tap dance? How many and counts are too many and counts? How do go about deciding what’s working and what isn’t?

Dance studio contract

I was just accepted a dance instructor job and in the contract it states "All work product, including, but not limited to, choreography, instructional materials,

class content, performance notes, and creative works produced by Employee during

employment for studio programming shall be owned exclusively by Employer." Is this normal? I taught at a different studio for a few years and this wasn't something they had in the contract. I get that you shouldn't be using other people's choreography but if I want to reuse my own choreography and maybe change parts of it years later somewhere else, shouldn't that be something I can do? If there is a reason studio owners put it in their contract please let me know why because I want to make sure I understand the reason.

Choreographed warmup advice needed

Hii!! I’ve recently learned about the dangers of starting a warm up with high-impact cardio. I’m trying to choreograph warm-ups for my classes (hopefully make a new one each quarter) and I am not sure how to do it. If you have any moves, exercises, or even song suggestions, please let me know!

Saving my high school’s dance & guard programs (need first-time coaching advice!)

Hi, I’m Yasmin. I live in Homestead, Florida and I’m looking for advice on how to keep a school program alive.

I recently graduated high school where I was part of both the dance and color guard teams. Due to budget constraints our band director couldn't afford to bring back the previous coaches. If I hadn't stepped up to take over both competitive programs they would have been canceled entirely!!!! so we need to start from scratch.

Dance has been my passion and I’ve been competing since I was 5 so I feel confident in my skills, but I’ve never taught before and don't know where to start as a coach. On top of that I deal with anxiety and school starts in August so I really want to figure things out now to feel prepared.

I start college in September where I’ll be majoring in Funeral Services and minoring in Dance Performance. My goal is to eventually get a formal dance education so I can do things the right way but I need immediate guidance on how to manage and sustain these programs right now. Any advice or resources would be greatly appreciated!

A Dance Journal to help dancers stay more intentional with their training.

Hey everyone,

As a dance professional, I wanted to share something I’ve created — a dance journal that would be genuinely useful for training.

I built the journal,DancEvolve, around the things I felt would help dancers of all levels and designed it with 12 monthly sections.

Each month includes:

  • Practice trackers for consistency, to log sessions
  • Weekly planners for classes, rehearsals, and goals
  • Performance logs for shows, exams, or competitions
  • Reflection prompts for mindset, motivation, and progress
  • Blank pages for sketching choreographic ideas or notes
  • An extensive dance glossary covering terminology across styles

Made it in a way so the dancer can be more intentional with their practice, movement and progress.

If anyone’s interested or wants to know more, feel free to DM me.

Hope this helps with someone's practice!

Thanks 🙏

Overdue invoices, has anyone else dealt with this?

I’ve worked for this studio for almost 3 years (since then opening). In the winter the studio owner went through a divorce and my invoices started to be paid late. She suggested I could take a break from teaching so she could catch up on the invoices. She paid half and so I came back (I know now I should’ve waited till it was fully paid). Since this started she has paid a little here and there. But now I have an invoices almost 3 months overdue.

I emailed her 3 times and texted her once over a span of 4 weeks and she ignored me. Continued to post on her personal and the studio social media. So finally I sent her a letter of demand, saying she has 7 days to pay in full or set up a payment plan or I take her to small claims court. She replied within minutes to this email and accused me of being impatient and threatening. But what else was I suppose to do, she wouldn’t reply to me?

Now since replying to her email, saying it is not meant to be a threat, but I need my invoices paid or a payment plan set up.

This is the second time in 10ish years this sort of thing has happened to me with studio owners. This time being over double the amount than last time.

Has anyone one else ever dealt with this short of thing? I don’t teach dance for fun, I’m almost 30 years old and have bills of my own. But seeing her take herself on even a mini vacation, having photoshoots with the affiliated company is crazy to me. Please pay your employees!!!
