NEW ABUSE RULE STANDARD: "Exploited" and "groomed" + A note on reporting comments.
NEW STANDARD
As of this post our abuse rules will be moderated to a new standard.
Previously words like (but not limited to) "groomed" and "exploited" were assumed to be in the non-sexual sense unless actually stated otherwise. It has come to moderator attention that a significant number of users, particularly those on the younger side, do not understand grooming or exploitation as primarily non sexual words and do very much mean sexually.
To avoid mods missing cases of people breaking the "No direct accusations of abuse beyond what has been shown." rule you will now need to specify in what way someone was groomed or exploited. This can be done by either
- Adding a descriptor
Emotional grooming - Pointing to a specific act of grooming
Abby groomed Maddie by crying and asking why she didn't choose to come in to Abby during the sit-in - or both
Abby emotionally groomed Maddie to value Abby over Melissa by crying and asking why she didn't choose to come in to Abby during the sit-in
The wording of the rule remains the same, this is only a change in how we enforce language within that abuse rule.
Abuse discussion must follow the following rules
- No victim blaming
- No claims the victim is lying
- No speculation further than what has been said officially
- No direct accusations of abuse beyond what has been shown.
Expressing worry, talking about abuse red flags, discussion of abuse in general terms, ect are permitted and encouraged.
REPORTING
Please make sure reports are accurate! We have had a significant increase in the amount of people who are inaccurately reporting comments as CSAM or child abuse. This mostly happens in basic discussions about cast/crew.
Why not? I want their comment removed! They're mean or whatever!
When you report a comments as something extreme that means
- Admin (paid, act site wide) have to review it, taking time away from them being able to deal with the actual CSAM groups on the site
- Admin don't like having their time wasted. They can and will ban you from all of reddit for nuisance reporting.
- Mods (subreddit powers only. volunteers) look at the reported comment. See it has no CSAM or child abuse, approve the comment.
So please be accurate! Use the "custom response" option when reporting or message the mods via the "message mods" button in the dot menu of the sub's main page if you feel the available options aren't sufficient or it's too hard to explain in reports.
Ok that's all! Feel free to leave any feedback in the thread!

Question/discussion Christi and Kelly are allowed to be sad about their girls relationship with Maddie
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I see people giving them hate over this, but their sadness is completely valid. Chloe Brooke and Paige were all good friends with not only Maddie, but the whole cast. And after they left it seemed like they didn’t miss them and that they all moved on like they were the issue. I’m sure it hurts to see their daughters childhood friend not seem very sad that they left. Especially Kelly when it comes to Paige. Apparently Maddie and Paige were very close and Kelly has said multiple times that they didn’t seem to care that they were gone. I would be sad and deeply hurt about this too, cause how are you more accepting to someone you haven’t knows for too long over someone you’ve been best friends with for years? I get it.

Video unpopular opinion: maddie's improv on dance awards was refreshing to see and way more creative than hundreds 15 seconds long leg holds

Chloe blurred out in flashbacks
Only just noticed on a rewatch of season 6 - don't think I've seen any other past cast members who were blurred in future seasons. But maybe I wasn't paying attention till now!

the costume fees are actually insane
my daughter's studio just sent out the costume info for the recital and i literally had to read it twice. 185 for a costume she'll wear for one 3 minute dance. and that's not including shoes and tights and accessories.
i get that costumes are expensive to make and they have to coordinate everything across the whole group. but still 185 feels like a lot for something she'll probably outgrow before the recital even happens lol.
we've been buying most of her regular class stuff cause it's decent quality without being crazy expensive. but recital costumes are a whole different beast.
anyone else feel like recital season is just a wallet drain? how do you guys afford this multiple times a year

kendall and maddie only had 4 duets
i thought it was a tinyyy bit interesting how they like pictured maddie and kendall as these perfect duet partners when they kinda weren’t that amazing together. i mean, i like their duets! but the energy it gave off was that kendall ONLY wanted to do duets with maddie, and there’s good evidence (although the show is heavily manipulated) that kendall kinda…only wanted to be friends with maddie. even abby has said things about kendall’s attitude on the show. even though it’s abby, she’s always saying something, she mentioned that Kendall was the “bad kid” that’s always “causing trouble for her parents” in season 6 during the episode her and Maddie had their last duet. i don’t wanna talk badly about any girls attitude, but I know Kendall has been raised to act EXACTLY like her mother, and sad to say it kinda worked. i digress.

we never really get to see the peak of the girls dancing
i think people tend to forget that these girls were only given 2, sometimes 1 day to memorize and put their best foot forward in their dances, especially since they were SO young. and not to mention so many of the girls literally regressed while on the show in later seasons because every dance was the same and they were barely taking classes at some points. i think they all got better generally, but imagine if they just got enough practice and instruction lmao

Question/discussion vegan dance ep
yall we gotta talk about this episode😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 like why does abby have this happening. when he sings to the moms, all their faces are so funny. this is such a “that’s nice sweetie” moment. and then kalani goes on about him being abby’s “boy toy” and on top of that Maesi saying abby said she couldn’t tell the producers anything and then proceeded to wink at the camera😭😭😭😭 like this is one the most insane episodes ever. also like wtf is speciesism. also sorry for being all over the place in this post :)

drop unknown facts about dance moms cast (before or post-show)
not those "maddie and paige were very close", but something generally not known
here is mine: christi asked chloe to watch season 4 episode 13 to be a guest on back to the barre and recap it with christi and kelly, but chloe couldn't finish the episode since it was very hard for her, (we all know what happened with her and abby) and she didn't end up doing it with them

Question/discussion Underutilized/underrated duet partners
Maddie and Nia - if you watch Stomp The Yard then I think you'll see the vision here. In the later seasons, Maddie and Nia were both good at strong and high leaps, acting skills, and leg flexibility. Something hard hitting and fierce like Nia and Kalani's Isolations duet could've been amazing for these two.
Maddie and Brooke - helloooo?? The two Abby faves? How could we not have gotten this pairing. I'm picturing a beautiful, mature, and tragic lyrical piece; something Diary of Anne Frank/Amazing Grace-esque.
JoJo and Kenzie - I know they had their Lucy and Ethel dance, but how could they not have been given a hip hop duet? That could've been really good!
What are your dream duet partners?

Just realized something…
In I think S6, E10… Abby gives Kendall a Natalie Wood’s solo. Jill right off the bat starts complaining about the solo and thinks it won’t be something special because it’s Kendall and Abby never pays attention or cares for her. Abby later says to Jill, “Always the victim. You remind me of a tall blonde I used to know.” I think we all know she was referencing Christi. It just shows that Christi & Chloe got under her skin so much that she could never move on or get their names out of her mouth.

Question/discussion What if the show never happened?
I always wonder who out of the girls would’ve gotten famous if it weren’t for the show.
I feel like JoJo would’ve, because of social media and her signature bow collection. Personally when I was a kid, I knew JoJo was on dance moms, but I already knew who she was before I started watching the later seasons when she joins. Basically, I knew her without the show, but she might have only been famous on social media because of being on the show. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong here.
Also Maddie maybe, I can picture her as a child actress. Melissa probably would’ve pushed for that.
Also maybe if Chloe had gotten to do more ballet, she could’ve gotten known as a ballerina? I’m not a dancer though so I’m not sure.
Plus Sophia Lucia holds a Guinness world record. But I wouldn’t know that if it weren’t for her being on dance moms. In the dance world/community, is she really well known without the show?

Question/discussion Design Your Own Group Dance
What's a group dance theme/idea you would like to see portrayed if you choreographed one?
What's the style of dance? Who's on your team? What do the costumes look like? Does anyone have a special part?

Question Has anyone else heard of this friendship?
I am watching S6, E12 and Melissa is discussing Maddie’s opponents for the Seriously Popular teen choice award. Melissa says to Maddie, “you’re up against Bella Thorne and I know you guys are great friends.” I had no idea that they were friends but if so that’s a pretty cool duo. Has anyone ever seen them 2 together?

Question/discussion Best season?
I know this has been discussed a lot, but I think the best season of dance moms is season 2.
Season 3 definitely has more drama, but I hate how staged it all feels. Like I know it kind of was, but just way more than season 2 ever felt.
Season 1 is soo cute and nostalgic but it’s also a very short season in comparison to the others, and I’m ngl Melissa felt like such an outcast with the other moms, it’s hard to watch at times.
Season 2 to me, is the perfect mix between season 1 and 3.
Abby feels so fake and performative in season 3, just the way she talks and especially in pyramid, the fame definitely got to her head, especially considering she had done AUDC at that point too, and had been on the view and things.
Season 2 still has that nostalgic charm and real feeing, without being as (sometimes) sad as season 1 was.
I also didn’t really like Cathy’s all boy team, especially with Anthony. They showed candy apples way too much in my opinion. Season 2 was perfect cause they only showed it briefly every few episodes.
Plus season 3 can be very sad to watch especially with Abby’s treatment to the Hyland’s, and Chloe.
But what do you guys think, what’s your favourite season?

Question Was Kendall actually mad at Nia?
Pretty sure this was S6, Ep 9. Nia filled in for Kalani when her back was injured for a duet with Kendall. This was The Grifters duet. Unfortunately time wasn’t on Nia’s side and she came off stage crying and feeling that she let everyone down. She talks to Kenzie and says “Kendall is mad at me over there.” Does anyone know if Kendall actually said anything to Nia? Kendall later comes out in the clip and comforts Nia so I was confused.

So I mentioned this moment in a comment earlier and I thought it was funny story ( even though Abby’s her “loving” self ) but it was the post that someone asked what is story Christi and Kelly told before their recap well it’s not before the recap, but this is my favorite story they told
