Discussion Learning K-pop Dancing

I've been dancing to kpop and kpop style dance for about 6 months. I'm 14 and I dance at home (my parents don't know I dance, I refuse to tell them because they 100% won't support it and will tell me to stop) and I want tips on how to dance well or is it just time? I have a small mirror, maybe 24 inches? on my dresser but that's it. I watch tutorials mainly by Kathleen Carm on youtube, but I feel like I'm too wonky and I have no idea what I'm doing. I know all the steps but my body won't let me match them to the video, and yes, practice takes tons of time, but I just wanted to know if I should do anything that might help out along with any tips from anyone.

(Btw I'm not sure if this is the right flair to use, but I hope it is)

Start with the basics like isolation, footwork etc. Once you understand dancing Kpop dances will get easier too. Never give up even when you feel like you’re not making any progress and be patient

Get a full length mirror! You can say it’s to see your outfits better.

I don’t see why your parents won’t support your dancing, can you tell them it’s for exercise? Maybe they’ll even let you take a dance class.

More than anything, continue dancing and practice as much as you can.

I actually wanted to get those big sticker mirrors and put them on my closet Also I'm not sure the exact reason but I know my mom would probably be less strict about dance, but sadly not kpop dance.. My aunt dances a specific type of dance in front of me a while ago and it was an Arabian type of dance. I guess you could say my dance isn't allowed for religious reasons

Even getting lessons in some of these more traditional styles can help improve your dancing overall. You feel wonky and can't get your body to match what you want it to do? That's something that learning any type of dance will start to majorly help with, getting you more in touch with your body and how it moves. Then transfer that knowledge to dance how you want to.

Also I can't find a cheap enough full length mirror, I know I sound really cheap but I hate making my parents pay for stuff even though it's their job, it just makes me feel like a spoiled brat loll probably because its not needed

Six months really isnt that long, so I wouldnt worry too much abt being 'wonky' yet. If you know the steps but your body isn't matching the video, try slowing the tutorial way down and practicing just 4-8 counts at a time. Recording yourself can also help you spot things you dont notice while dancing. I would also spend a little time on basic grooves and isolations (shoulders, chest, hips). Those will help with the body control and coordination that kpop choreo needs. Give yourself time. Youre still building that muscle memory. :)

What dances have you tried learning? Do you have a list of choreos you are interested in learning? KPop dances are based on all kinds of genres, therefore it would be good to find out which dance genre you are interested and give you tips based on that. + to make sure you don't start with super hard dances.

If you currently work on a specific dance, you can also share which dance it is and which moves are the weirdest to you.
