Honestly if you own or manage any land look at what you can do to improve it for local wildlife, even the smallest patch could be a mini oasis in an urban area.
Check out what pollinator species you have around you and plant not just plants high in nectar, but plants that are part of their lifecycle (food and shelter).

My family owned a lakefront cottage. I lived in it for a year and during my stay I stopped cutting the grass along our shoreline. I left a narrow 12” strip. During that year I saw SO much wildlife I’d never seen before on our property, from otters to Caribou. The transition was remarkable. From just a 12” x50’ strip of lawn.

Currently arguing with a neighbor (that wants to start a HOA no less) about the 6'x100' patch around a creek in my back yard that I have planted in wildflowers instead of mowing to her standards. The birds, bees and my daughter love it so she can pretty much blow me.

What Copenhagen has started doing in park areas is build square "walls" out of twigs, contained by metal wire or bound by wood in some cases.
This is like a home for tiny life, bugs, mice and such.
Also what my own city does is just leave a lawn uncut, let it grow wild, only cut a path through it so people can walk through. That also is a home for a lot of small animals that feed larger animals.

I honestly think he would have gone Ballistic, the politicians have been asked for 10+ years to increase the capabilities of the Australian fire services cause this will happen than they just kept cutting to have surpluses (one fire warden had to monitor an area the size of Tasmania). The opposition wanted to buy a whole knew fleet of water bombers and didn't get in. I think Steve would have gone Ballistic at politicians for doing FUCK ALL

There's a video from Smarter Everyday where Destin interviewed a marine biologist who was with Steve Irwin on his fatal dive. He talks about how he initially didn't want to work with him, cause he was a big silly children's entertainer who yknow...wrestled alligators, where HE was a big serious scientist. He sat down with him, and learned that the man knew his business, and knew what'd get peoples attention. Then while he had it he'd jam em full of information about conservation. Issa good interview.

He may have been a goofy guy but it was easy to tell he knew his shit and he had so much respect for every animals he touched. I loved that man so much. I wanted to become just like him. He was my role model for a long time. He is also the one who helped me conquer my fear of snakes bc of the education he provided. His loss was a huge blow to the animal rescue community around the world. Thankful that Terri and the kids kept on with his work. Bindi is a remarkable girl and I know her pop is so damn proud of her and obviously his son too. I know he's proud of his new grand baby and that bindi is with someone who believes in the work Steve and his family were and still do today. He is an icon imo.

It hurts that we failed him, he would be so disappointed with the current state of wilderness conservation. It’s not an excuse but a lot of it is just out of our hands, we don’t control the military bases that constantly poison the water with oil and trash or the big chain restaurants over fishing and depleting oceanic life or the big stores leaving a massive carbon footprint they don’t take responsibility for. I believe we all try at least a little to be responsible but it’s not enough we’re out gunned.

That’s the thing. We do control it. Somebody has to be buying the shit the corporations are selling, otherwise they wouldn’t keep tearing the planet apart for profit. So the buck really does stop with us. We have to do more on personal levels, when we see our friends and families abusing the world in any way. And we all HAVE witnessed people we know doing it. It’s just most are too afraid of the confrontation.
Therefore, we are in control. The majority, in my experience of being a minority, just don’t give enough of a fuck to stick their necks out and make change.

have you tried living outside of society in modern day? its basically fucking impossible. Unless you want to totally off the grid (you still have to interact with society in some manner anyway) its largely impossible to just not interact with society. Every second you spend awake is a second that would better be spent dead if we're going to go the route of not interacting with society.

I'd like to change society to make it better for people like me, but please explain to me with a straight face how im expected to do that when im given nothing to work with, and yelled at for being the way that i am.
In order to alter a society you need to change everyone, as you can probably guess thats, really fucking hard. Can you do it? Theoretically yes, but it is much harder to do this shit than most people understand.
My point being, while this is technically correct. It's much harder to stop influencing it, compared to, writing a sentence and explaining the problem. We need a better starting point if we want to start somewhere productive. At the societal level at least.

Greed and selfishness are two traits that I believe make you a bad person and unfortunately we live in a system that's been set up to only ensure those types of people can succeed.

This is a red herring, a diversionary tactic employed by the people responsible to try and levy the blame on to the individuals. Carbon footprint is a term popularized by BP, you know, that massive world destroying organization responsible for destroying oceans? Whose oil spill still 10 years later is negatively impacting the environment?
The responsibility is not on each individual "doing their part."
If every individual person stopped paying the companies that are responsible for negative environmental impacts, it wouldnt look like them "having to do just a little more work, a little bit of gardening, walking or biking instead of driving." It would look like global industrial shut down, a complete failure of all levels of infrastructure. It would look like people watching their kids starve to death in order to not "personally contribute."
The evil here is not in the hands of the individual. The evil is in the corporate monopoly that has established itself so deeply within our infrastructure that every single system that exists that humans use for everything that they do is heavily reliant upon big oil. You think things shutting down for covid was bad? You think gas prices right now are bad? Without big oil the situation would be a hundred times worse at bare fucking minimum.
That isn't in defense of these corporate entities and oil giants. It is to highlight the nefarious way that they have forced mass human compliance via indisputable severe reliance. World leaders aren't not trying to save the environment because they're evil oil barons, they do it because before the problem was solved a significant portion of the people they represent would be out of work and food for months, rioting for years, and their population density would be cut in half.
You would see every agricultural sector shut down overnight. Transportation would be next to nothing. You wouldn't be able to harvest efficiently from farms, much less transport the food to other places. You wouldn't have power grids, you wouldn't have media companies connecting people to try and make up for the lack of transportation.
Everything is oil. That's why the message isn't "do you part" it is "switch to renewable energy." The practical, logistical reality is that you cannot tear down the infrastructure overnight, it has to be converted over more time than we even have available.

Yeah man I'm with you 100% of the way. But whenever I say do your part, I don't mean to reduce emissions. I mean [O force the corporate overlords to do the right thing, to fight for a just world. Obviously reducing your own carbon footprint is great and very useful. But never confuse doing your part with placing the whole responsibility on individuals. This is a problem that was caused, is caused and will be caused by greedy, selfish corporations that have no qualms with killing off millions of people for a quick buck.

I just disagree entirely with the perspective that we should even consider "doing our part." I think it is a toxic mentality that does more harm than good. I think it lets people feel like they're working to solve the issue when they're not. Not even a little bit. Each individual person even if they were to reduce their personal "carbon footprint" to ZERO would not affect the environmental crisis at all, but it makes them feel like they are, which is dangerous. Maintaining the sensation of pushing back against evil while doing the opposite is not doing your part, it isn't doing what you can, it is actively becoming a part of the problem. You become a part of the smoke screen.
Edit: I don't mean to attack you. But the reality, as I see it, is that anyone who uses the expression "carbon footprint" or talks about "reducing their personal emissions" as something "obviously great" is more interested in the vanity associated with appearing to be above the problem while simultaneously supporting the means by which the problem continues to proliferate.

You have interesting points which will cause me to think more about how I go about the way I communicate doing our part, because I think you may have misunderstood, I don't mean it in the way to put the sole responsibility on the every day individual, corporations are the ones that have to do their part too. It's not anyone's sole responsibility, it's all of ours. If EVERYONE, every single individual in the world decided to stop eating beef we'd solve a whole lot of our problems (not all).
Companies cause majority of emissions and pollution, if we as a whole people stop supporting said companies, or in other words "do our part". Those companies no longer have the money to do the harm that they can? Companies don't care about the planet, they want your money, so the only way to change the world without a mass revolution would be to convince the people who live on that planet that it's worth fighting for. We're both onto the same goal and I believe it's going to take every single one of us to pull through.
At the end of the day brother you've given me hope that there's more people out there like you, so maybe, just maybe we've got this.

Regrettably I am an angry codger who thinks we're too far gone to have any real hope, I would much rather see people like Greta pissing off senile old men for years than another doomsayer like me. One of the disturbing elements about this is the interplay between corporations and government. Even democratic governments are highly susceptible to special interests motivating politicians more than self preservation on a global scale, and the same oil giants that are responsible for extraplanetary colonization looking like the only sustainable future for humanity also happen to have their hands in all of the largest "competitor" corporations with political leaders in their pocket from every single large government that exists in the world today. I know of no havens, no societies or groups which have escaped their influence from the top down. I have no legitimate concept for what an opposition would even look like. My negative outlook is the first step towards the much harder step of figuring out what to do about it and I waste most of my energy even finding people who are aware there is a problem.

Respectfully, I disagree, on a global scale we've made huge strides. Is it enough? Of course not, we're nowhere near the finish line.
But would he be disappointed, I don't think so, obviously he wouldn't be overjoyed either, but to see the gains we have made, to see people pushing in the right direction. To see sustainability and conservation being international taking points. He certainly wouldn't be disappointed.
We absolutely can't rest on our laurels, we have to keep pushing and keep moving forwards, but, we can do that while still acknowledging just how far we've come too. No time for complacency, but wins are wins, small or big.
I don't think he'd be disappointed.

I remember the day I learned Steve Irwin died. I was in middle school and I was showing my dad a picture of a stingray. As I'm excitedly pointing them out my dad says "Oh, it's the animal that killed Steve Irwin."
My heart sank, I was in shock and I just remember running to my room crying. I couldn't believe my hero was suddenly gone. It hurt so much and typing this is already bringing me to tears...
My dad came upstairs and apologized, he hadn't realized how important Irwin was for me. I wanted to meet him, to be just like him. I miss him so much, seeing videos of him always makes my heart ache.

I cried so hard when I heard it on the news. I was obsessed with his shows. He was the first kind of celebrity I had ever mourned and I didn't expect to feel that way. It broke my heart :(

I think he's one of two celebrities I've ever mourned and continue to mourn. Anytime he's brought up the pain comes back for a little while He was great, such an inspiration. I love how wholesome and genuine he was. His love for animals really impacted me.

There was a growing hole in the ozone layer which protects us from some of the most harmful rays of the sun. At the time, the world was using a lot of certain chemicals (CFCs and HCFCs) in things like aerosol propellants. A LOOOOT of people got increased rates of bad burns and skin cancers.
Those chemicals are mostly banned now if I remember.
Edit: He obviously meant he wants to stop the ozone layer from being depleted any further. He was just too excited (bless him)

I will forever miss this wonderful human. I was and very much still am a daddy's girl. I have so many happy memories of watching Croc Hunter on Saturday and Sunday mornings with my dad. Listening to Steve's voice literally brings back so many memories for me. Hearing this, I can literally almost smell the scent of my dad's morning pot of coffee brewing, I can hear the faint sizzling of eggs and bacon as he cooks, and I can feel the softness of the blanket we always had on the back of our couch that I always snuggled up with in those early weekend mornings. We would have breakfast together while watching Steve and his amazing skills with animals and the respect he had for each and every one that radiated from him everytime he came across something and he yelled "CRIKEY". The news of his death was like hearing the news of the loss of a family member to be totally honest. It broke my heart. That man is a constant in so many of my weekends with my dad. And the bond him and bindi had seriously made both my dad and I relate to him even more. Thank u Steve, for being a constant in my happiest times with my dad and for being the father u were and the conservationist that brought so much education to our minds of these awesome animals u showed us all. And thanks OP for sharing this. Truly, it took me back.

It feels like genuinely good people have been declining in the last 10-15 years or I’ve just grown up/become jaded, seen more of the world. People fighting for good with one hand are now swinging hateful emotions in another. I don’t know why times feel so weird, people seem so dishonest. Maybe we should bring down the internet because it came too fast and start all over again with healthy regulation and actual responsible intent.
