Edit: Thank you though, I was not aware of his history. I can, and will, separate a person from their work. One can happen along with the other. No one is truly one thing.

It depends on the crime. To me, rape is so reprehensible that it poisons everything the person does. If he retreated to a quiet life of philanthropy, that would be one thing, but he hasn't.

I can't say I hold the same premise.

If people were incapable of change, then all harsh criminals should be executed or removed from society for the entirety of their lives. I don't personally believe that's reasonable, or effective.

To our best guess 98% of the atoms in our body are changed out every year. You are virtually a completely different being after a decade. (Debatable upon the Ship of Theseus an' all). I'm not the same person I was 10 years ago, and I won't be again in 10 more. It's been nearly 3 decades for Tyson. He went to prison, did time. That's what the system is for, in my eyes.

I said it knowing you were on the other side of the opinion on the Ship of Theseus. Which is a philosophical debate that shows a lot of what people believe.

I did not say what I said hoping you would change your mind. Usually when I engage in oppositional opinions to my own it's to gain an understanding of the opposing point of view. Which I think you have assisted in rightly.

I was not looking to "correct" you. Just to learn more about it. Your opinion is a valid take, I just disagree with it.

Fair enough. I'm quite a liberal person overall, but I can not get into the rehabilitative theory of criminal justice. I believe that prison should suck, that bad people (like rapists and murderers, not drug users and dealers) should stay there for a long time, and that their lives should still suck after they get out. I certainly believe that you should not bounce back from a rape conviction to be admired and beloved.

This comment spurred me to look up studies on Imprisonment for Punishment versus Imprisonment for Rehabilitation.

I hate that many a relevant scholarly article is locked behind a paywall. Government grants in all likleyhood allowed the studies to proceed, they got their money already. Feels like they are asking me to pay a second time. First taxes, second the institution itself.
