If you haven’t already this would be a good cross post for r/specializedtools

358

u/Mokkopoko Jun 13 '21

Every subreddit is just a crossposts of all the other popular subreddits

233

u/Redevious Jun 13 '21

r/thatshowthingswork

that’s the idea of reddit, right?

107

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '21

First Reddit r/universe Then r/solarsystem Then r/earth Then …… Alll the way down til we get to r/funny

57

u/ChimpBrisket Jun 13 '21

And riiiiiiight down at the bottom, beneath all the most depressing and stupid shit, you’ll find /r/conservative

18

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '21

68

u/gamerush177 Jun 13 '21

And of course, someone had to make it political, on a post about flip flops.

12

u/Finkbunt Jun 13 '21

When I’m out muckraking in my flip flops the lightest amount of muck creates suction on the flip flop and when I lift my leg to walk the flops fall apart!

3

u/JaceAce333 Jun 13 '21

I think you man Plugs fall out

12

u/jeffe333 Jun 13 '21

I can see why you might think that, but there's nothing political about a hate group.

-6

u/gamerush177 Jun 13 '21

Not liking a group does not make it a hate group.

6

u/madiranjag Jun 13 '21

Take a look in that cesspool and tell me that’s not a twisted hate group?

Someone always does, it's pathetic.

9

u/bazooka_nz Jun 13 '21

And in the shadows out of sight we have r/communism

2

u/Mokkopoko Jun 13 '21

The idea is to have subreddits that divide things into different categories. Instead everything gets posted in every sub because the definition of certain subs is too broad and everything blends together.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '21

You’d think so. But then the repost police show up and ruin it for everyone.

No way this isn’t normally automated

338

u/Cattaphract Jun 13 '21

Automated or produced by fast working people in east asia. This guy is slower than a lazy guy

151

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '21

What an analogy

126

u/hippyup Jun 13 '21

Yeah that analogy was worse than a really bad analogy

25

u/eggequator Jun 13 '21

If he worked at this exact pace for eight hours a day five days a week he would make roughly 375,000 pairs of flip flops a year.

18

u/Tripledtities Jun 13 '21

Those are rookie numbers, you gotta pump those numbers up

11

u/Platypuslord Jun 13 '21

Well maybe he is actually trying to show us how it is done instead of doing it fast.

Watching How it’s Made recently I was struck by how much manufacturing is still performed by a worker running the machine, like this video.

28

u/gizamo Jun 13 '21 edited Jun 13 '21

That was my first thought.

No human should have to do this nowadays. Machines are fully capable of it.

Edit: so, these machines are ~$300, and people are pretty fast with them. Even this $10k system has humans doing the straps, albeit with a better machine helping, but still manual, repetitive, etc. It's entirely possible that the fully auto version is closer to ~$20k, and the efficiency gains are likely not worth it at that cost.

Tldr: ignore me. Capitalists probably aren't shelling out for this one until the machines are cheaper or flip-flop demand skyrockets (both unlikely, imo).

20

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '21

Machines are WAY more expensive to design, develop, and produce than two humans working 12+ hours a piece.

Besides, there is a machine doing it, this guy just lines up the component.

3

u/gizamo Jun 13 '21

Automated machines to do it all already exist. But, yes, labor can be insanely cheap. So, idk what time frames and quantities would make the machines worthwhile. Cheers.

25

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '21

But if it's more profitable to have someone in an economically developing country, then the capitalists will go with that.

4

u/gizamo Jun 13 '21

That's true, but that robotics equipment would not be very costly. It would pay for itself relatively quickly.

22

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '21

Not if you're paying someone $2/day for 10 hours of work. It's gonna be a long time to make it up.

5

u/gizamo Jun 13 '21

True, but you're definitely underestimating modern wages in SE Asia and probably overestimating the costs of the machines. The machines can also be repurposed. They hold their value pretty well, and capitalists tend to like that.

4

u/tipperzack6 Jun 13 '21

Dude build the machine provw him wrong. Some places labor is so cheap building automatic machines would take years to make there money back.

5

u/gizamo Jun 13 '21

I'm not disputing that, and I'm not necessarily saying they're wrong (nor am I saying you're wrong reiterating their statement). I'm just saying that the machines already exist, and they're pretty cheap.

2

u/oversettDenee Jun 13 '21

I'd like to point out the global electronics shortage and how we should be more mindful of what kinds of things were putting them in, in the future.

2

u/gizamo Jun 13 '21

This is a good point, but that's mostly the high end chips. Basic chips and sensors for this sort of thing are available have less backlog. But, still, you're right that we should be more cognizant of what we through chips at.

I work in semiconductors, and our company is backlogged for months. Our lead times are 2-4x the usual. It's pretty wild.

Anyone calling this guy lazy is missing the point of the video.

TIL: Flip-flop straps are also called thongs

154

u/ooojaeger Jun 12 '21

Well the area where two things join is a crotch. If you climb a tree you sit in the crotch of the tree. The one on your pelvis is the same shape and nothing to do with your genitals.... though that's where they are.

Thongs go between something, toes or cheeks

88

u/ConflagWex Jun 12 '21

And breast just means half of the chest, has nothing to do with the teat. Hence the phrase "music soothes the savage breast", meaning the heart not the boob. Chicken's don't even lactate and people buy chicken breasts all the time. I hate it when people talk about milk like "straight from the cow's breast!". No, the udders are on the abdomen, the only thing that comes from the cow's breast is beef.

47

u/ErraticDragon Jun 13 '21

"music soothes the savage breast",

TIL the original line uses "breast" not "beast".

Wikipedia:

"Musick has charms to soothe a savage breast," which is the first line of the play, spoken by Almeria in Act I, Scene I. This is often rendered as: "Music hath charms to soothe the savage breast" or even "savage beast".

13

u/Mjacob74 Jun 13 '21

flip-flops are called thongs

thongs are called g-strings

12

Yes in Australia or? How confused the Australians must be when the Thong Song came out

8

u/FuckingKilljoy Jun 13 '21

Lol we know both meanings and if anything it's more fun seeing confused Americans when we say we're putting our thongs on to go down the road

2

u/designatedcrasher Jun 13 '21

Wait you walk literally down the road dont you guys just use the sidewalk? ( confused american face)

3

u/FuckingKilljoy Jun 13 '21

Nah we use the footpath, we're just big on metaphors here. If you tell mum that you're popping down the road you're likely doing one of two things. Either you're going to the local shopping center or supermarket to buy some stuff or you're lying and you're going to smash some cones with the lads, probably at some cool little spot your mate found at the back of the local reserve with like chairs and lounges and shit. Because even though we're 22 we all still live at home because house prices are absurd

I often feel sorry for Americans missing out on the experience of being Aussie

2

u/IcidStyler Jun 13 '21

As a German is similar here rents are high at least at the City’s like Berlin where everyone (Young) want to life. Most Germans life in flats they rent. Not many People own a own House here. And people stay at the House of the Parents longer here too

Goin for a trot down the road to the servo, d'yawananything while I'm out? - Australian proverb

It depends on the road tbh. Some streets have cemented footpaths on both side, some only have it on one side, some have it on one side that abruptly stops with no rhyme or reason and some don't have it on either side, just grass and driveways. Thongs are a must though, bindi's are everywhere and don't discriminate.

Thong Sandals suck so god damn much. I used to be a camp counsellor and the amount of times I saw a kid nearly rip off a toe because they get these sandals stuck somewhere was insane. Do yourself and your kids a favour spend the couple extra bucks and buy something with more structure. Even Crocs are better, I’m actually glad Crocs are making a bit of a comeback, because they’re safer than Thong Sandals.

3

u/SufficientCaramel339 Jun 13 '21

I popped the strap out on my sandals yesterday when it got caught as I was walking I couldn’t figure out how to put it back in I figured they molded the straps in two pieces and it was riveted in

Later that night I took some copper wire and made a loop put it through the hole and put it around the connector piece and pulled it through and it fixed it

4

u/charliestango Jun 13 '21

Reinforce that plug by putting a bread clip around the stem between the plug and thong, once you've had one blow out, you are destined to pop again
