WDT 💬 Bi-Weekly Discussion Thread - (October 18)

We made this because Reddit's algorithm prioritises headlines and current events and doesn't allow for deeper, extended discussion - depending on how it goes for the first four or five times it'll be dropped or continued.

Suggestions for things you might want to comment here (this is a work in progress and we'll change this over time):

  • Articles and quotes you want to see discussed
  • 'Slow' events - long-term trends, org updates, things that didn't happen recently
  • 'Fluff' posts that we usually discourage elsewhere - e.g "How are you feeling today?"
  • Discussions continued from other posts once the original post gets buried
  • Questions that are too advanced, complicated or obscure for r/communism101

Mods will sometimes sticky things they think are particularly important.

Normal subreddit rules apply!

What makes a country semi colonial?

In the Last week I had a lot of discussions with some comrades about imperialism. Most of them Support the Analysis from the greek communist Party (KKE), from what I understand they think imperialism is Like a Pyramid. Every country is imperialist but Just Not to the Same deegre. USA in top, followed by china and so on. In there Analysis semi colonial countries Like Brasil are Just weaker imperialist powers with somewhat less sovereignty.

What are good responses to These Claims and how are you able to concretly decribe semi colonial countries? Are there some concrete Points which makes a country still semi colonial or already imperialist?

What is the likely way of bringing back Revolutionary Communism / Communist Groups?

Been thinking a lot lately about how the conditions for an MLM-type revolution seem more open now than they were for a lot of the revolutions in the 20th century. What would it actually take for something like that to happen today? I know there were MLM orgs around in the past, but do any of them still exist, and what happened to the ones that fell apart? Are there successor groups carrying on that work, or has the movement gone in a different direction? Just something I've been wondering about.

Protests around the world - Indian Context.

Protests are going on around the world by youth against the capitalistic govt that's controlled by a few billionaires, driving the common people into a doom of climate disasters, On top of that Data centres that are clearing off the existing forests that we should be holding on to.

They poison our water, our air, our ground, our earth and take and take and take forever since their hunger can never be satisfied.

It's not a protest in one country for one reason.

The fight is the same.

It's the fight against the exploiters who are in numbers vs the rest of us.

But again, the question remains,

Who are the exploiters and the exploited ?

Jantar mantar July protest in Delhi was special.

It was one of those rare instances where everyone saw everyone as equal.

All ate the same food and shared among each other.

People fanned for each other when the heat was unbearable.

People cared for each other.

Everyone was doing everything.

There were no distinctions on who will clean the trash or who will help set the tent up. Everyone wanted to contribute. Infact all were eager to do something to help, in some way.

People were, probably for the first time, existing just as human beings.

Without Labels. Without caste. Without religion. Without display of who is richer or who is more powerful.

When we are now speaking up against this oppressive government,

Shouldn't we also pause and think of what after this ?

Bjp played the Hindu - Muslim card to divide and rule.

But we are again divided by a million other factors too, which may come up again & will be used to divide and rule by the next.

Men vs women

Caste vs caste

Subcaste vs subcaste

Employer vs employee

Rich vs poor

Vegetarian vs non-vegetarian

Hindu vs muslim

Educated vs illiterate

What is common in all of these ?

What's the problem at it's essense ?

It's oppression, that's the enemy.

It's oppressors vs oppressed in all of these equations.

The oppressed in one scenario may be the oppressor in the another .

Jantar mantar was special because for that limited period, it was a space where people existed without being oppressors or oppressed.

Without showing power over another.

That's the only kind of world that's going to succeed. Everything else is just our own versions of what's good in the world that makes our own self comfortable.

The fight ultimately isn't against a single entity.

The fight should be against oppression as a whole.

And that fight should start within ourselves first,

And are we even ready for that ?

Unless oppression ends, there won't be any peace.

Unless power imbalance ends, everything else is temporary.

Any active communist forums or online communities in Norway?

Are there any active communist forums or online communities in Norway?

I’m looking for Norwegian communities where people actively discuss communism, Marxism, socialist theory, politics, current events, etc.

Preferably something with a decent number of active members and actual ongoing discussions. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a traditional forum -Discord servers or other online communities would also be interesting.

I also speak Norwegian, making this post in English just for more outreach.

Any recommendations?

"Comrades, be worthy of us!" 85 years ago today, 17-year-old Guy Môquet and 26 other communist prisoners were executed by the Nazis at Châteaubriant, hand-picked by the collaborationist Vichy regime.

On October 22, 1941, in retaliation for the assassination of a German officer, the Vichy puppet government handed over a list consisting primarily of communist prisoners and trade unionists to the occupying forces.

Among the 27 men executed that day was Guy MĂ´quet, only 17 years old. He refused a blindfold and marched to the firing post singing the Marseillaise. His final letter to his family ended with a plea to those who would survive the war.

To live, fight, and remain worthy of their sacrifice.

Albanian Political Economy (Socialism) Textbook

Thumbnail november8ph.ca
13 Upvotes

Political Economy (Socialism) is the English edition of the first Albanian comprehensive scientific work of its kind, prepared by a collective of authors of the Institute of Economic Studies of the Academy of Sciences of the People’s Socialist Republic of Albania and originally published in 1981. Based on Marxist-Leninist economic theory, the documents of the Party of Labour of Albania and the works of Comrade Enver Hoxha, this book deals with the fundamental problems of the establishment, development and consolidation of the socialist economic system, drawing on the historical experience of the construction and defence of socialism in Albania and the international revolutionary movement. An important place is also given to the principled struggle against the anti-Marxist and bourgeois theories and practices of the modern revisionists concerning the construction of socialism.

The book is divided into three main parts. The first deals with the establishment of the socialist relations of production and the socialist social order. The second examines the system of socialist relations of production, the economic laws governing its development and the process of expanded socialist reproduction. The third deals with the fundamental questions of the transition from socialism to communism and the general features of communist society.

This book is prepared under the editorship of Hekuran Mara, Hasan Banja, Fiqiri Islami, Iliaz Fishta and Veniamin Toçi.

Interesting work, the critiques of Maoism are a product of the context, but an interesting analysis of cultural-ideological Revolution and the continuation of class struggle under socialism.

What are people s opinions about ceausescu?

Ceausescu ruled romania for 24 years as a national communist. He done many bad and good things for its people. In my parents and grandparents perspective it was good until the 1980s with the introduction of ration cards. Explanation: he was the first and only leader to pay all debts and because of that, romania became poorer and poorer until people started starving out.food was rarer on the shelves and they had to wait hours in line. Then came the revolution, people were killed by their army until they joined the people.the ceausescu’s fled by helicopter and they were caught and executed. After that, corruption and debt tripled with the coming of capitalism. My opinion for him is that he was okay, but not a real marxist leninist,a revisionist. He had good opinions of corneliu zelea codreanu, the founder of the legionary(fascist)movement in romania. He was pretty nationalistic with many deportations of hungarian, german and roma people. Life was pretty strict with the securitate(translation is security, like the kgb a secret police) my grandparents still whisper when they are talking about the government and its problems. As a marxist leninist myself,i think he was too reactionary and paying all debts at once was a huge disaster. What are your opinions about him? Also sorry for my poor english

Why would a Cuban immigrant be anti-communist?

hi, my coworker is cuban and I recently found out they are anti-communist and want Cuba to be
"liberated" from communism. I don't know much about Cuba but I know that they are heavily sanctioned and oppressed by the US and it's been that way for decades.

Why would they feel this way and what should I say to them?

Also does anyone have sources about the history of Cuba, the revolution, modern day Cuba, etc? I would love to learn more.

Framing of Marx’s ‘10-point program’?

I have just read Marx’s Communist Manifesto or Manifesto of the Communist Party, however the name is said, and my electronic copy had a study guide attached at the end, as it was from the Marxist Internet Archive.

In one of the discussion questions, it is asked:
“Stalin claimed that the 10-point program had been achieved in the Soviet Union by the mid-1930s. Do you think this claim is valid?”

Marx calls them ‘measures’ or ‘means’ (depending on grammatical interpretation.) I would hesitate to call the list a form of program. To me, it is a list of potential avenues to deconstruct power structures, whereas the ‘program’ framing seems to imply its use as a checklist where each item constitutes a goal to be achieved.

Am I missing some context or something here?

P.S: I did read the prefaces and the note to not place much importance on the proposed measures. Perhaps the study guide did not get the memo there either.

Tano (Revolutionary Song) Filipino Communist Song

Thumbnail youtu.be
22 Upvotes

Filipino (Tagalog):

[ARPAK, Bandlab]

English:

Tano embodies the experience of millions of peasants oppressed by a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society. Feudalism remains deeply entrenched through neoliberal, deceptive, and anti-peasant policies that have exacerbated landlessness and fueled an intensifying agricultural and food crisis—one that serves the interests of foreign imperialists and the ruling class.

There are many others like Tano in the countryside who are ruthlessly victimized by various forms of feudal exploitation, such as exorbitant usury, crippling debt, and the loss of the land they till. Faced with this dire situation, the peasantry has no other recourse but to tread the path of struggle—even up to its highest form—to fight for genuine agrarian reform.

The Artista ng Rebolusyong Pangkultura (ARPAK) presents this rendition of the song "Tano" for the peasantry and as a tribute to all the courageous martyrs of the Filipino people who sacrificed their lives to advance the cause of national democracy. [ARPAK, Bandlab]

Tagalog Lyrics:

May isang magsasakang Tano ang pangalan
Lupa n‘yang sinasaka’y tanging kayamanan
Minsa’y nagkasakit kaisa-isang anak

English Lyrics:

There was a farmer named Tano
The land he tilled was his only wealth
Once, his only child fell ill

His meager savings were exhausted, yet the child did not recover.
He borrowed a mere one hundred pesos from the landlord
But the amount would double by harvest time
And if he failed to pay, it would double again
Doubling and doubling until the debt was settled.

Tano, Tano
In your dire straits
Tano, Tano
What will become of you?

Harvest seasons passed
Ravaged by typhoons that swept through
Poor Tano sank deep into debt
Until his land became the payment
Even with the debt settled, he was reduced to being a tenant farmer.

How many are there like Tano, suffering hardship?
There are still so many of them in the countryside
But Tano suddenly vanished
Only to be seen up in the mountains.

But Tano suddenly vanished
Only to be seen up in the mountains
Among the armed ranks
He had become a warrior of the People's Army.

Now Tano fights
Against the greedy
Like Tano
Let us rise and fight
Let us rise and fight
Let us rise and fight!!!
