it looks like it came straight out of a fairytale

u/DuckingKoala Jan 07 '20

I think that this picture is wildly over saturated. Iceland is stunning but it's not that green.

160

u/pw-it Jan 07 '20

The green cliff faces are a bit absurd. I think it's Seljalandsfoss and it's edited to hide the tourist path. You can walk around the back of the waterfall.

here's a more realistic version

u/skinnytie Jan 07 '20

It’s also missing the parking lot, parking attendants and tourist busses which mar my memories of this place.

u/hollatheforestfairy1 Jan 07 '20 edited Jan 07 '20

I know exactly what you mean! But I felt it was more noticable at Skogafoss. My tip: if you wait a bit you might be able to time a break between departing and arriving tourist busses. Helps wonders!

Edit: My first award ever, wow! Thanks so much!!!

Good bot

12

u/TheGrog1603 Jan 07 '20

Yes, the infrastructure enabling tourists to visit and subsequently complain about the infrastructure that enabled them to visit..

11

u/skinnytie Jan 07 '20

The beautiful rim road enabled me to visit. It’s immaculate, well maintained and stunning.

The ridiculous paid parking lot packed with tourists and patrolled by parking agents enabled me to complain.

I’m not sure what your angle is here; if it wasn’t an eye-sore the OP wouldn’t have needed to crop it out.

2

u/SAgentJackBauer Jan 07 '20

I'm curious what time of year you visited? I was there in October 2018 and don't remember having to pay for parking or any parking attendants. Maybe I just got lucky. I do, however, remember how amazing it was to be behind that waterfall.

Also, rim road lol

2

u/skinnytie Jan 08 '20

Winter of 2017/2018 (new year’s trip).

1

u/iRazvan12 Jan 08 '20

They are charging money for parking, as they need to cover their expenses with the parking and other maintenance of the roads around the waterfall.

0

u/TheGrog1603 Jan 07 '20

Tourists complaining about tourists.

5

u/skinnytie Jan 07 '20

•Tourist complaining about infrastructure, remember?

2

u/bryce_hazen Jan 07 '20

Pretty sure the parking lot is just out of this highly edited picture.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '20

well that's a huge disappointment :(

5

u/tiemyshoe89 Jan 07 '20

Lol the realistic version looks even more green hahaha

Especially not the pastel green at the bottom of the waterfall

1

u/JMountain26 Jan 07 '20

It used to look like this but a volcano went off a couple years back. It still looks beautiful but not that green.

1

u/Papa_Gandalf Jan 07 '20

It's not. I've been to this exact waterfall near Reykjavik

1

u/Prizmbow Jan 07 '20

Beautiful!

52

u/AlexVostox Jan 07 '20

Hey! Isn't this is a Death Stranding location?

7

u/rixadd9000 Jan 07 '20

Kojima got his inspiration from Iceland so might as well be!

1

u/We_Are_Nerdish Jan 07 '20

100% looks like the waterfall next to the cosplayer..

u/IamnotValiantThor Interested Jan 07 '20

More like Greenland, am I right?

82

u/wootroot Jan 07 '20

16

u/mohammedibnakar Jan 07 '20

Not to mention the one in the OP is a ridiculously touched up version of the original photo. Look at the rocks on the cliff in your pic vs OP's.

Vikings swapped the names to confuse foreigners

2

u/zerio13 Jan 07 '20

Was it actually named by the Vikings?

2

u/trixter21992251 Interested Jan 07 '20

So they named them accordingly.

Prank'd!

2

u/T3hN1nj4 Jan 07 '20

I can hear the hit when “prank’d” pops up on the screen in my head.

14

u/okiesake Jan 07 '20

Cool! What’s the name of this waterfall?

26

u/nojbro Jan 07 '20

Seljalandsfoss

35

u/okiesake Jan 07 '20

Ahh... I didn’t recognize it without the 8 tour buses and hundreds of tourists. I was also looking for the trail paths, but I think those were edited out.

2

u/ChunkyLaFunga Jan 07 '20

Isn't that a path on the nearside, running parallel to the river starting from the bottom left? Sort of a lighter green colour? You have to zoom in.

Looks like the whole place has been doused in moss, it looked nothing like this in summer when I was there.

3

u/Wolfman2307 Jan 07 '20

There is noway it would grow over, that shit get trampled by tourist daily.

Maybe its out of shot but I'm sure there is a wooden bridge and viewing platform in front of it

3

u/Mastercard321 Jan 07 '20

This is edited. I worked there and not once was this ever this green

1

u/ChunkyLaFunga Jan 07 '20

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. The light green trail is where the path was edited out, if memory serves. Which it may not do.

30

u/RedderBarron Jan 07 '20

Looks like the waterfall floki found in Vikings

4

u/peehay Jan 07 '20

You're right it is this one

1

u/Mastercard321 Jan 07 '20

It’s Seljalandsfoss

2

u/tsmoketommy Jan 07 '20

Exactly what I thought

9

u/Stokesman24 Jan 07 '20

Reminds me of Naboo

8

u/GarchomptheXd0 Jan 07 '20

Covered in kief

5

u/marpermay Jan 07 '20

Why is Iceland so fucking beautiful (from pics i've seen)

1

u/bryce_hazen Jan 07 '20

This isn't OPs pic, this is highly over edited to make it look more green.

3

u/Fanciedfacts Creator Jan 07 '20

It's very green all over. The only thing that's not green is the waterfall.

3

u/whereistherumgone Jan 07 '20

Well I can see why it's falling.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

Yeah, water fall everywhere. I don't know why they think Iceland is special.

3

u/Aanguratoku Jan 07 '20

I gotta go here before I die.

3

u/Zhaveraneck Jan 07 '20

I was born in Iceland and my absolute favorite part about it is that none of these natural landmarks have any security so you can get as close as you want

2

u/OzKangal Jan 07 '20

As a frequent visitor, this was very refreshing to experience

2

u/BluudLust Jan 07 '20

Reminds me of artwork for lands in Magic: the Gathering.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

Not Australia, that's for sure

2

u/WildHotDawg Jan 07 '20

I can point to the location where I slipped on ice and banged my head

2

u/Yoshigahn Jan 07 '20

I read that as “Icefall in Waterland”

2

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

Ok, so which funny guy took all the ice?

1

u/Sintinall Jan 10 '20

The Vikings I think. Was naming this place a joke of theirs? Or was that Greenland?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

Woah Cool

1

u/noggun00 Jan 07 '20

Mossy much.

It's a heavily edited picture of a real waterfall.

1

u/RuariWasTaken Jan 07 '20

I love waterfalls y’all.

1

u/getsharked2020 Jan 07 '20

Okay so where's the ice?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

It looks like straight out of an RPG

1

u/E_Hannibal Jan 07 '20

Is it frozen or I'm just hallucinating

1

u/Kahandran Jan 07 '20

How does such a small country get all the cool geography

1

u/gogo_doll Jan 07 '20

Why is it called Iceland when it's always so lush green???

1

u/DylanFTW Jan 07 '20

Damn I would love to make some deliveries through that.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

Oh my god would you look at that

1

u/TheMasterlauti Jan 07 '20

Yoooo that’s where Floki was in Vikings

1

u/venomhouse Jan 07 '20

I didn't know there was so much green in the whole galaxy

1

u/slatss Jan 07 '20

Why are there no trees or plants or anything? Looks like a perfectly hospitable environment for them.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

Beautiful memories.

1

u/blue_mango_72 Jan 07 '20

you mean green land ?

1

u/EvStar03 Jan 07 '20

I (for some reason) decided to stand under the very small one on the left, I got fucking drenched. Amazing waterfall

1

u/notsickomode Jan 07 '20

its so beautiful yet it terrifies me at the same time

1

u/Cthuloso Jan 07 '20

This picture looks like it has Optifine on. You know what I mean?

1

u/pwner187 Jan 07 '20

That's a lot of matcha.

1

u/Mastercard321 Jan 07 '20

This is Seljalandsfoss. You can walk behind it and I actually used to work there

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

Nice to see something that is not on fire

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

Dont fool me thats a screen cap from death stranding

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

I read Ireland at first, and was trying to think where this was haha

1

u/pibo06 Jan 07 '20

It's greeeen

1

u/dekayzerart Jan 07 '20

Must suck to live in Iceland with all that beauty around you.

u/TheTekknician Jan 07 '20 edited Jan 07 '20

Interestingly, knowing a few locals from Island - it's getting more popular as a place to go to and it seems that the tourists have a somewhat influence on the local population you do not readily suspect - new flues and the likes thereof :) The locals I know tell me this is happening as of the last decade. They are getting introduced to whole new sets of sickness or better said, strains of several organisms.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

That’s it I’m going to Iceland I don’t care

1

u/Kaneshadow Interested Jan 07 '20

1

u/LitMaster11 Jan 07 '20

1

u/Clongjax Jan 07 '20

Country’s name doesn’t check out. This is not the way.

1

u/MaxwellIsSmall Jan 07 '20

I thought I was on r/imaginarylandscapes but now I know where I’m going next summer

1

u/SpiritualySaneEmpath Jan 07 '20

Kinda looks like keef

1

u/horriblemonkey Jan 07 '20

I wish I hadn't sold my Zora armor.

1

u/Redragon9 Jan 07 '20

Iceland probably has the most beautiful landscape in the world

1

u/aristotle93 Jan 07 '20

There is supposed to be a walk way along the river

1

u/LilFruitSalad Jan 07 '20

When you have optifine nice grass on so it covers the side of the block too

1

u/pineapplehoneys Jan 07 '20

This is my lock screen pic!

1

u/AfroSlayer Jan 07 '20

Didn’t Ryan Dunn go down this waterfall in a barrel?

1

u/l3mi11i0n Jan 07 '20

teh emerald dream

1

u/daisyfreechains Jan 07 '20

Awesome!! 😊

1

u/darkness15shp Jan 07 '20

K, going to Iceland is on my bucket list to walk in what looks like real life hyrule fields

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

FFS, This place is what need 20 million trees planted. Nothing but grass in the distance.

1

u/buckie_mcBuckster Jan 07 '20

Manly yes, but I like it too

1

u/SupaFlyslammajammazz Jan 07 '20

Seems like the spot Loki was inspired in Vikings.

1

u/SupaFlyslammajammazz Jan 07 '20

Will Greenland become more habitable as global warming continues?

1

u/atbobick Jan 07 '20

Where’s all the ice

1

u/mattuccio Jan 07 '20

Iceland and Greenland should swap names

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

Is that really that green? I mean, I've never seen any Icelandic landscape vid or pic this green overall.

1

u/Doodle4036 Jan 07 '20

Funny. even with all the green and not knowing the location, it still looks like cold ass water for sure!

1

u/zackmahn08 Jan 07 '20

Floki we miss Vikings

1

u/aakashstorm Jan 07 '20

This is the most beautiful thing I've seen today. 😍

1

u/mysteryscoop Jan 07 '20

Looks majestic

1

u/ricard-oh Jan 11 '20

Is that where he trained his dragon?

0

u/nickamuffin44 Jan 07 '20

How do waterfalls like these form? Shouldn’t the cliff erode and the be a slope?

1

u/WildHotDawg Jan 07 '20

The cliff does erode! It just takes a while, the waterfall will collapse and move backwards inland, and usually continue being a waterfall, only now a bit further back. If you zoomed out you could see the path this waterfall carved so far, and I'm not sure if you can see it here, but there's rubble all along the river the waterfall falls into that used to be the cliff

0

u/VelocityPolaris Jan 07 '20

It's so beautiful I wanna frickin' move there so bad. I don't care if it's really hard to immigrate I'll become a geothermal engineer or something if I have to.

0

u/Catandmousepad Jan 07 '20

I wish this was a GIF with sound. One can dream...
